Hub I have a dilemma
08/25/11 6:36 AM

Hub tell me if you think I'm on the right path. Yesterday morning topped the bike of with fresh fuel (93) and started on my trip, during the ride out the bike stuttered twice (cut out like complete power loss) felt like loose battery terminal, parked at destination was thinking bad gas. Started out and headed home and bike did the same thing twice more and then completely stalled on side of road. when running it shows 14.2 volts when it stalled it was showing 12 volts. It would turn over but not start, I pulled the battery out and the negative post was completely corroded, show I cleaned it up and retightened the neg/pos terminals and put her together, fired right up and made it half way home. She stalled again and would not fire (she would turn over but not fire) Showed 10.9 volts at this time. So in the morning I'll be diagnosing her.

I'm thinking maybe a short in the battery (original battery 4 years and 37,000 miles, plus a really hot summer) I'll have it load tested first, check fuel for water and check pc ground (not really suspecting PC since the voltage is varying).

Looking for your 2 cents here bro.

1. Corrosion = Voltage output poor.
2. 14.2 = Charging system A-OK.
3. 12v = Not a good sign.
3. Key on = 12.6 ~ 12.7 is a sitting battery for a few days. Current draw on a 4 year old battery 12.4v w/key on.
4. 10.9v att = Won't revive as in deep cycle itself back to at least 12.1 volts, or there about.
5. Current draw on a 4 year old battery that sat dry for 4 years, received the same battery prep-charge before installed into service = Warranty claim w/11.?v and dying. See photo below.
6. No need to diagnose. Battery is toast. We are still walking it out.
7. Road test bulleproof... She won't make a peep with a new battery.
8. We have the same problem. Bike is ridden, then stop to pull over, view the landscape, take a stretch. Hit the starter and it sounds sluggish w/new bike.
9. The learning curve says, we have the OEM in the bike? That means a battery about 5 months aged; already brand new in bike and here comes the assembly line. Buy the time you get it, how old is that dry battery before it is prepped for you?
10. Replace battery. Or get a free 24hr road assistance card with new bike purchase. I wonder why?

Thanks Hub, that was my thinking and where I was going to start. Testing battery tomorrow but already planning on replacing it with a true gel. Thanks for the input.

My dealer has the truegel in stock for $84, same price as the oem with a 2 year warranty.

The truegel is a 14a/h battery also.
