Since recording two straight resounding losses at the polls, Republicans have mostly distinguished themselves by voting almost unanimously against a popular President and his first major bill, the economic recovery package.

Friday, Bunning went so far as threatening to resign - and let the state's Democratic governor appoint his replacement.

In Louisiana, the GOP is so dissatisfied with Sen. David Vitter, who last year admitted to hiring a hooker, that he may have two primary challengers, including family values activist Tony Perkins.

If that was all, the GOP might not be too worried. But over the past week, two of its great hopes crashed and burned as they were trying to recast the party.

New Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele, Maryland's 50-year-old former lieutenant governor and the first black GOP boss, was widely mocked for declaring in an interview that he would be "off the hook," recruiting in "hip hop settings."

It didn't help that he elaborated to the Washington Times, "We need to uptick our image with everyone, including one-armed midgets."

He won more derision after Minnesota GOP Rep. Michelle Bachman - infamous for declaring that Barack Obama hated America during the White House campaign - proudly shouted "You be da man!" to Steele at a recent conservative conference.

Later, Steele dropped jaws by sending Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal some "slum love" in a shout-out on Curtis Sliwa's radio show.

Jindal, the 38-year-old great hope of the party and America's first Indian-American governor, himself flopped as he answered President Obama's address to the nation. Critics responded by launching Web sites comparing Jindal to the goofy "30 Rock" character Kenneth the NBC page and the governor was forced to admit he had taken license in the Katrina portion of his rebuttal.

To distressed party operatives, it looks like their leaders are flailing.

"They imploded in a very short period of time," said Rollins. "The speech [Jindal delivered] was an absolute and total disaster."

Rollins and other strategists looking for an answer do not think one will come soon."

If anything Bush getting us into a completely unnecessary war caused all our problems today, especially our economy. He spent trillions of dollars on a pointless war and when we are trying to account for the money, it's lost, theres no record!
