'09 blown motor
03/12/12 3:11 PM

I blew my motor lastnight with only 12,000 miles. Looks like it shot a rod right threw the lower part of the motor and dropped oil all over the highway. Yea I was riding hard but isnt that what this bike is made for? I always do my maintenance and change my oil. Anyone else had this happen at such low miles?

Yea I was riding hard but...

Lets talk about this. Are we redline riding? Miss a lot of shifts? Show your buddies the rev limiter? That looks like a case of (no pun intended) stretched rod bolts needing a swap out. Notice how the crank was well lubed, not 'dried scored' on Dogo's crank lets say.

For Dogo's case (again, no pun) I'd have to guess, there was not an oil starvation, but more a weak link that might be too many hours on a stretched bolt? Now, it is down to both of you. Dogo? Were you cranking it up when she let go? K9mike sort of admitted to some romping?

I mean, I do a littlelottall myself. I'm never close to redline, but hard load in 6th no less. So, low speed rpm lugging may not be as severe as high rpm, i.e., piston speed. That means, when the piston moves up, it wants to keep flying thru the head. Only thing that holds that rod from leaving the case are the piston pins and rod bolts, or, rod stretch.

I redline mine. Never going to stop until it blows but I doubt it ever will. A drag racing motorcycle that can't be redlined?

Well the hole isn't that big but yea, looks familiar. And yes I do redline, ride real hard and fast. I drag race the bike all last summer but isn't that what its made for that?

Are we redline riding?

Yes

Miss a lot of shifts?

A lot? No... Once or twice, ofcourse.

Show your buddies the rev limiter?

Never... Mine was redlined in N one time to set the TPS on the PC3... before I learned the correct way to do it. That was 12k miles before the boom.

Notice how the crank was well lubed, not 'dried scored' on Dogo's crank lets say.

That crank is actually currently in another running motor.

Dogo? Were you cranking it up when she let go?

Yep... You see that road in the pic?

K9mike sort of admitted to some romping?

Rode mine hard as well.

For Dogo's case (again, no pun) I'd have to guess, there was not an oil starvation, but more a weak link that might be too many hours on a stretched bolt?

Never really did figure out exactly why mine was one of the ones to go, while others are ridden hard and stay together... Coulda been a stretched rod bolt... Coulda been that factory rod bearing clearances are too tight.

100 degree day? It was 34 degrees here lastnight. I raced all last summer in 100 degree days without a problem. So now what? Anyone know of a motor for sale?

Here is an '07 motor for sale.

I parted my '06 out... made more $$$ than it was worth together and running.
