ZX14R......as a sportsbike
03/03/13 11:31 PM

Greetings fellow bike nuts,
I was just wondering..... what is the ZX14R like as a sportsbike? I dont expect the handling to be like the ZX10R which lets face it is a bit of a track animal, but how does it compare to my old 2008 zx14se? What would you guys suggest as upgrades, especially where the suspension is concerned.

Oz, when my 2012 was new I went down to a suspension tuner I had used before, and with the preload wound all the way in (no lines showing) I had just over 46mm of sag on the front!
The rear needed about 5mm to get my sag to where it needed to be. I am a similar weight to you.
I bought some second hand forks from the US, as nobody could tell me if the 2011 springs valves etc would fit in the new forks (I hope there is more knowledge around now) I put 1.1N/mm springs in the front, along with 20mm Ohlins Supersport valves, the oil used was 10wt. I replaced the rear shock with a Penske 8983 sprung for my weight.I have put over 12,000 Kms on the bike since. The only thing I would do differently, if I was to do this again would be to change the dampening in the forks slightly, as I think the dampening is a little on the weak side, but I do ride on some bloody awful roads!
This was the best mod I have done to the bike to date, the bike handles a lot better than standard, & I have a lot more confidence in corners.
Hope this helps.

Neil

Thanks for the run down on your suspension set up Neil. I took my old zx14 to izzy at suspensions are us in melbourne and he told me the spring rate is one he would use in a 600 sports bike with a light rider! He told me the standard setup was under sprung and under damped.

I had about twice as much sag as I should have (45mm).

If its not too rude a question Neil, how much did your suspension mods cost?

I would have to look back through the invoices to be 100% but with the rear shock, I think the total was around 1700 - 1800.00 dollars. I still have my original forks unchanged sitting in a box in my garage, so I could recoup maybe 600.00 dollars there if I decide to sell them. A lot of money I know but the transformation was worth every cent imo!
