Gen 2 engine to Gen 1 Frame
08/21/23 6:28 PM

I've looked at Gen2 engines for sale on Ebay and it's just the engine. No radiator, no transmission, probably no clutch or stator.

Will the missing parts need to be purchased to match up with the Gen2 engine or will the Gen1 engine parts I have work?

Rook, I wouldn't touch it. Gen 1 is 1352cc and gen 2 is 1441. Figure it's going to be a mm change with matching more of a 1441 to a 41, and some 1352's wont fit a 41.

Only the parts pages matching numbers knows for sure. Look for a compete engine of your cc engine size.

Kind of see the proportions of just 2mm of the rod growth to sort of square the engine some? Kind of take a mm is the up stroke, the other mm is the bottom stroke. That will grow the engine case a mm difference is you have to compute that factor creating a new engine case of changed clearances.

Where the crank may have a straight cut to clutch outer basket, and yours might have a conical cut.

So basically nothing fits and it snowballs from there part to parts wise. Complete engine is the less $headache$ move.

Thanks Hub. So you're saying a Gen1/Gen2 hybrid is probably going to have to be be all Gen2 under the fairings. Just a guess but that sounds like 5 or 6 thousand dollars worth of new parts.

Then we have suspension and brakes. Another $6000.

Then the biggy, turbo.

Thanks.

Somebody on here was doing it years back. The problem he ran into was the gear position sensor and he solved that. I have no idea how successful the final outcome was.

LOL, Kurz.

Rook, That's how fast time went and refinements in the way. Swap everything short of the engine families, and ECU's. Ron Ayres has the best OEM prices I believe, so be the insurance adjuster and add up all the parts to make the bike ride-able again. There you see at least the money it needs to shell out.

Take that number against a used first gen 14. Say it's break even money. My way of thinking is to buy a running, never crashed, dropped bike, I have spares off of the bike sitting now; for years down the road.

The Hubster as usual, is making a lot of sense here, I'd listen and learn.......

It might be cheaper to buy a Gen2 and swap the engine, stator, clutch and transmission over to my Gen 1 frame. As for the brakes, wheels and suspension, I'd rather go with aftermarket anyway.

or just go with all Gen2. I wonder how much heavier a Gen2 frame is.

There have been several 1441's transferred into the early bikes. I have to assume that all the accessories came with the 1441 but was not to many hurtles to fix.
I have thought about it because my 2008 has no nanny factory and a 1441 would make it a little sleeper but the 1441 transplant comes with a price which is the 1441 itself. I am not sure if I have 1441 money but would also not mind a 2015 anniversary model might make me happy but wonder how many of my comfort mods would work on a 2015.

I bet your seat, footpegs and handlebars would fit a Gen2 just fine.

Yeah, if the price of equipping a Gen1 with a Gen2 engine is the same as buying a whole Gen2, there would have to be some real benefit to the Gen1 frame. I rather doubt there is much difference in weight between the two frames. Gen2 is 593 lbs, Gen1 is 566, both wet weight. The Gen2 engine and exhaust might be responsible for the majority of the weight increase. If that's the case, a Gen1 bike with a Gen2 engine and aftermarket exhaust is going to be 20 lbs heavier than it was with it's Gen1 engine. As you were alluding, it might be splitting hairs to compare a Gen1 with Gen2 engine with a Gen2 with Gen2 engine.

There is no difference between the frames and have swap all kinds of stuff around . fairings frames, engines all swap. It's the insides of engines that are different and wire harness , ecu and gauges
