Targa Tank Bra for 14R
05/02/12 12:08 AM

Someone had asked me to post a picture of my tank bra and I kept forgetting to snap the photo. The Bra is a Targa for a Concours. Both bikes share the same tank.

The flash on the camera makes the bra stand out much more than it does in person. Looking at it in person it blends right with the bike, it's actually much darker than the seat.

Have a Lockhart Phillips on the gen1. It served well for 5 years. Lightest thing you can get and also widest area of protection. Never had a problem except a bit of a PITA to take off and on. I usually left it on and pulled it back to wash carefully around it.

MagKnights are a very nice easy to remove alternative. I have that on now.

I really like the OEM rubber you guys have. Goes great with TechSpec tank grips. I have a set of those for my gen1 as well.

Thanks for sharing this info. I would have never thought the Concours and the ZX14R shared the same tank or are at least similar.

Anyway, I am a believer in bras. I bought the MagKnight first. I ordered the 2 piece but I was not satisfied with the gaps. I ordered the Targa Concours bra. I cut off the extra tabs and used strips of velcro and stuck it to the MagKnight. No sticky mess on my paint, just on the MagKnight.

Sorry to display my ignorance boyz, but we need a tank bra to protect the tank from? I know it's a dumb question but was always curious why folds don't just go with pads...Does the full bra present some advantages.

It did seem silly having to buy two tank bras but this is how I arrived where I am....

-I ordered the 2 piece MagKnight without really researching what it looked like. The 2 piece was all that was available for the ZX14R with stock tank pad.

-When it arrived, I fitted it, bent it into shape and was disappointed because there were big gaps. It looked really good though. I thought to myself "Damn, just wasted about 40 dollars, on another failed purchase Pep, whatcha going to do? Waste more money on your new toy trying to keep it pristine?"

-I was not willing to buy the 200+ dollar Bagster.

-I then came across this thread. "Wow the Concours Targa tank bra fits?" I was willing to spend another 40 dollars, so I ordered.

-It arrived, I tried shaping to fit and it fit beautifully just like the pics of the original poster. However, I did not think the tabs would have worked. It required bendable tabs to be inserted into the bodywork. It did not match. But I had lots of velcro so I cut off the tabs.

-I was going to take off the MagKnight feeeling bad I was going to put 40+ dollars on the shelf. Then it dawned on me
what if I just velcro it to the MagKnight? No sticky mess on my new paint. And taking off for cleaning would be easier because contact was all magnetic.

-Functional? Yes. Beautiful, cool, sick, tight, out of sight, swell, awesome, wicked, hellabad, da bomb? Matter of taste just like everyone's mods in this forum.

-What will I do when I bring my ZX14R around the famous S.F. Bay Area hangout Alice's/Four Corners and the "cool" motorcyclists start laughing it my set up? I could explain to them the process how I arrived at my modular, two vendor, dual material, dual attachment solution to tank rub. Or if I am having a bad day and my feelings are hurt, I could take off the Targa bra and put it in my pocket until I am away from the cool motorcyclist. But then again I would have to explain the velcro on the MagKnight. :-)

-Heh, heh, thanks for reading and keeping the thread alive.

/Pep, the Bra Man. (For the youngsters, he was the cool bra-ther in the TV show Martin)

Sorry Wolfman, I just realized I did not answer your question after my long story.

Yes, I believe in bras if you plan on keeping the bike pristine and hate seeing nicks and scratches. This is the first time I had a pad and I did not think it would protect it. But to each his own.

I am the original owner of 1988 Kawasaki Ninja 600R. As a youngster, I bought the full fairing bra and it has protected the bike well. She is proof the bra works. She was in such good enough survivor condition, I was able to display her at the San Mateo International Motorcycle show. People thought I did a complete restoration. Basically, many bikes of that era were considered throw aways and few are found unmolested or in original factory form.

PEP, I totally understand, so if I wanted a bra for the zx, what's your recommendation bro.

On the note of your bike collection:

Wolfman,

For the ZX14r, I am still trying to figure out what to use to prevent chips and all.

If Targa still made full fairing bras, I would have gone that route. I don't think they do anymore.

I see the trend in cars to get clear masks. That might be a good option.

Other than that, I am open to suggestions for the ZX14r.

Pep
