Shock Removal/Replacement
02/09/11 7:04 PM

I am ready to replace my stock shock and was wondering if anyone has successfully used the following method on a ZX14? Typically I put the bike on the rear work stand, slide a steel rod through the swingarm pivot hole, put a jack stand on each side of the steel rod as close to the bikes frame as possible, remove the rear work stand and then proceed with the shock removal. I am asking because the diameter of the rod that can fit through the ZX14 swingarm pivot is only 7/16". On my 2000 ZX-9R I am able to use a 5/8" diameter rod and the bike weighs approximately 100 lbs less. I have concerns with using this method because of the weight of the ZX14 in relationship to the diameter rod I can fit through the hole in the swingarm pivot. If you have done it this way please tell me what material the steel rod was. I really don't want to find out the hard way this method does not work. I am also interested in any other successful methods that have been used. Thank you in advance for any help provided!!!

you can flip the front pegs upside down and place them on jack stands. I think that is a bit sturdier than the swingarm pivot. I did that while working on the rear before I got my stands.
Since I got the stands, I use the stands front and back, and put the floor jack under the engine, raising or lowering as I need it. Then I dont have to try to lift with one hand and install a bolt/nut with the other.
