Rear Tire Size
03/24/17 1:12 PM

Looking at some new tires and wondering what size most folks prefer for the rear. Not looking at the brand for this thread but rather the size. On my C-14 Concours (heavier bike) I went with a 190/55 for a better turn-in ability. Wondering if I should also go that way for my ZX-14R or stay stock size 190/50? I also saw a 200/55??? Opinions by those who have experience on these options would be much appreciated. FYI - I have long legs so no problems with an increase in height on the back of the bike.

I went to a 200/55 this time around. I like it so far. I think some with hugger fenders have had clearance issues. Also if you have a bigger rear sprocket and the wheel pulled forward you could have a clearance issue. I know a lot of guys go to the 190/55

What maddox said^^^

I loved the 200/55 but the 190/55 is also a big improvement over 190/50.

I recently read a comment that 190/55 is the tire size recomended for replacement even though they don't give you that stock. That might explain why the speedo is dead on with a 190/55 and not with a 190/50.

200/55...can't say anything about a 190 because i've only run 200s on the 14...BUT, i have not complaints at all...i feel confident hitting corners, etc...no issues at all, and i like that way it looks too.

Can you install 200/55 on the stock rim?

And with a stock chain and sprocket and clear the swing arm?

No problem getting it on the rim and using it safely. It came very close to the inside front of the swingarm on my gen1. You might need to have a bit of chain stretch for it to fit. I have a little extra wheel base with my chain and sprockets setup.

I just bought a set of the Shinko 005 with the back size being 200/50. I'm hoping it fits my 2016 ZX14 fine. I'll update in a week or 2 when they are installed.

Should be no problem. Will be like a 190/55.

That's what I was thinking, Rook. The Shinkos were cheap, had decent reviews and can't be any worse wear than the tires that came on it.

I have a set of Shinko Verge on my bike...the 200...fits fine...rides as expected and has had good wear...no issues...getting the Metzeler M7RR in a 200...has really good reviews...

So far I got the rear Shinko 005 on. This 200/50 ends up being no wider than the 190/50 BS that came on it. I wasn't expecting much different. Hopefully I can out for a ride soon and maybe report how I like it.
