Good Times Protection Plan
03/14/12 8:00 AM

I bought my 08 14 used a year ago. The previous owner had paid for the extended warranty through 2015. I took my bike to the shop on Friday because of a possible coolant leak. Turns out the water pump went out. They are checking with Kawi to see if it is covered by the extended warranty(the plan was transferred to my name). Given the bad wrap extended warranties have, I thought I would make a post about my experience. I do not know what Kawi will do but I will post an update on how well the Good Times Protection Plan holds up. I should find out today or tomorrow, I will let you know what happens.

It is not a question of whether the warranty transferred, KHI itself says they transfer when title transfers, to the new owner.

What is being questioned is whether the water pump going bad is normal wear and tear (water pumps go bad from time to time, no way around it) in which case GTPP won't cover it.

GTPP covers stuff that happens which shouldn't happen, like motor mount cracks (with no evidence of a dropped bike) and such.

I hope they cover it, but if they don't, it won't be because they are disputing whether your GTPP is in force.

The bike has 3500 miles. If Kawi thinks a water pump should only last 3500 miles then there is something seriously wrong with their engineering team and this will go to arbitration.

GTPP is a rip off total waste of money if you really want an extended warranty buy one from different company

It came with the bike so it's no sweat off my back. I just don't want to pay for a water pump :).

What arbitration? It would cost you more to make something out of it than the cost of the water pump. Heh.

The man has a point... but to some, it's the principle.

3500 miles is premature failure, however... Should be covered. If denied, I'd take the bike to a different dealer.

I can only speak for my experience and I gotta say GTPP took care of me in a time of need,But I had to raise a little fuss to make it happen.
I tossed a rod right through the engine case presented the info to this forum....Hub says bring it to the dealer because you have the ext. Warr. so I do they tell dealer that it wouldnt be covered.
I tell dealer that I'm not the 1st one to have the problem and that I can prove it with info from ZX14 forums...Next day I get a call....Kawi will cover it!!!
They Spent over $8000 in repairs on my bike and I only paid $8000 when I bought the dam thing....Well worth the $500 I spent on Extended Warranty.

Welp, talked to the dealership. Kawi is going to pay for everything. Hope I don't need to rely non the ext warranty again:) they didn't even dispute it. Maybe because it is such a small repair(compared to a tossed rod)

I think one of the biggest issues with dealers doing warranty work is the cost. The dealer will make more money on the job if you pay for it yourself. Warranty only pays so much. I know this from back in 98 with my ZX11D6. Bought it new in January 98 and put about 4000 miles on it during the year. When I went to store it for the winter in November I noticed some oil drops on my shed floor. I traced it to the lower center case`s back of the tranny. I brought it to the dealer for warranty, which I only had the 12 month factory one, and the dealer fought me on it. They finally gave in and fixed it under warranty. BUT when I got it home 2 weeks later and went to store it I see new oil drops. Closer inspection showed the way the dealer tried to fix it was they cleaned the case`s but never split them... they put a bead of black silicone right on the split to try and stop the leak. I freaked out and brought the bike back to the dealer and made a huge seen about how the dealer does shoddy work and the owner of the dealership tried to calm me down and we went into his office and he explained that they lease out the repair shop and it is separate from the sales department and that they hate doing warranty work cause they dont make enough money Blah Blah Blah... But seems realistic money wise but does`nt excuse their fix. They split the case`s and fixed it right under warranty. If I waited till spring warranty would have expired and I would have had to pay. Friend totaled the bike late that spring and never bought another bike from that dealer again. So warranty work is sometimes a fight from the dealer where they ae not on your side. Then again some issues the dealer cant argue.

Pwshadow, I am REALLY glad KHI stepped up and is fixing this for you.

No doubt it is because of the low mileage and the fact the pump shouldn't go bad so soon, if ever.

Yeah I'm sure it is because of the low miles. This is my first Kawi. I keep hearing that they are reliable machines. I hope this is true for the rest of the bike.

I have never had a bike's water pump go out. Never. Always had Kawasakis, 40+ years.
