Muzzy mid-pipe to OEM header very sloppy
05/20/14 2:43 PM

My Muzzy slip ons didn't come with gaskets for the rear of the OEM header to Muzzy mid-pipe connection locations.

Should I be trying to remove the gasket from the OEM mid-pipe? I tried a little bit, but it just wants to crumble. It's pretty well stuck in the flange of the OEM mid-pipe.

I tried fitting the Muzzy's with no gasket, and the fitment is WAY too sloppy. I had to crank the securing hoop's bolt tight enough to basically crush the Muzzy mid-pipe flange, which causes a steep taper on it that makes the hoop want to slide off the mid-pipe. It'll probably stay, but it leaks exhaust like mad all around those two connections. A gasket there would not only a huge improvement, but it's surprising to me that they aren't included.

Does anybody have a solution? Did you have gaskets for your slip ons?

I've never bought aftermarket slips that came with gaskets for the header/midpipe. I always bought new gaskets.

Ive never had gaskets come with slip-ons but brocks sent this stuff to me with my full system. Used it on every joint. No leaks.

I see now on 58 Cycle's website, *-Re-use of OEM exhaust mid-pipe gaskets required."

... which won't work because they're stuck in the OEM mid-pipes so well that you destroy them trying to get them out.

I guess I'll look for some gasket material at the local parts shops.

Oh ... I also did a chat window on Brock's website with "Steve" about their CT Noise Reduction Plug ... $59 each, Ouch. He said it's for a 58 mm pipe, so I'm going to measure mine.

I also spoke to Curt at Muzzy's, and he says their mufflers "break in" and get quieter ... does anybody know if that's true??

Curt also said they sell a Quiet Core option that I can either install myself ($44 ea), although requires taking the entire muffler apart, or I could send them back to Muzzy's and have them do it for $65 ea. He says these reduce the diameter a little bit, increasing back-pressure ... and reduce the sound by 2 or 3 dB. Not sure that's enough to bother with. Oh ... he also said, You know I hardly ever get calls saying our exhaust is too LOUD. I pointed out, And yet you sell Quiet Core?

Dammit ... between the too-loud exhaust, and the shitty mid-pipe fitment, I'm starting to regret not just living with the potato launchers

I just got done installing my muzzys, and no they don't come with gaskets. You either order new ones or figure out a way to remove the old ones from the stock pipes. I tried everything to remove mine, but in the end the whiskey did the deciding for me, and out came the grinder. Not one fuck was given either. Even as I type this.

I usually try to keep these comments to myself but dude you're kind of a dumbass. Buy the OEM gaskets, they are cheap and work great.

On another note, the pipes should mellow out a little after they break in. Even my full Brocks CT Meg has mellowed some now after 500 miles or so I have on it. Also 3 db is noticeable if you choose to do a quite core insert.

Dude I could care less about the factory exhaust. Name call all you want. I don't know you and you certainly will never know me.

You wrecked your midpipes trying to clamp down on to the collector. You're gonna have a hell of a time getting it back together once you install the proper gasket. You might be able to stop in at a muffler shop and have them spread the flange back into shape.

Oh, BTW I've bought lots o' stuff for my RC51 from partzilla.com, and I see these gaskets that are $15.00 each at Bike Bandit are $10.43 at Partzilla.

I've never been on the partzilla site. I might have to check them out next time I'm ordering parts.

Thanks for the tip on partzilla! Just bought an OEM air filter for $45 shipped!!! That's almost half of what I paid at my dealership for a filter last summer.

Glad to see y'all playin nice!

I gotta order me another airfilter! Might try that place.

That oem gasket fits pretty tight, I had a couple thousand miles on mine before I pulled em, used a squirt of penetrating lubricant and they popped out after 5 minutes like nothing. Wiped em off and bobs ur uncle!

Cblast, I soaked mine for 30 mins..pulled and pulled and pulled. I got one to pull out like an 1/8" but thats it. The ends of my fingers were sore for 2 days after that shit. Mine only had 800 miles on it at the time so maybe that's the difference.

Mine's at 275 miles and they also don't budge; instead they just crumble. I didn't even bother trying any lube (easy boys!). Not sure what they're made of, but it sure seems like one-use stuff. Anyway, like I said 2 new ones are in route from Partzilla.

Yeah, I do agree, the new ones will be much better. I hear the point about the Muzzy mid pipes. And I agree, these slips for the money should come with new gaskets and a spring puller. This is a great thread actually. I am gonna bring this feedback to Muzzy. I think the Muzzy stuff is excellent. Always makes great power. In today's competitive market, anything they can do to stay on it is relevant. Our unified voice on products does get heard. Changes are simply one human being away from being made. Just takes the right guy on the other end listening. Just my 2c.
