Gas mileage
06/21/12 7:10 PM

Hi All, I`m not going to complain how fuel inefficient the ZX-14 is. I love the bike and the power it makes. But mine seems to use more gas than some others. The new 12-R was tested in the mags to be 36-40 mpg. Honestly, I get 31-32 mpg and that`s mostly on the highway doing around 80 mph. The computer says I average 39.5 mpg but the MOST I ever got was 38 mpg on a long road trip. I have a Muzzy full system and map and a Dyna Jet Power Commander. The bike runs good but the end of the pipe is always black. My buddy says it smokes a little when I get on it. My old ZX-11 always got in the 40`s and got 50 on road trips. Should I look into a different map or maybe an Auto Tune? Thanks in advance for any help. Lou D

When the bike was new and still stock and I used to give a diddley squat, the mileage was about 37 highway doing 65 mph.

The bike runs good but the end of the pipe is always black.

the tip of my pipe is also coated with a solid dry black soot. Heard another owner tell me the same thing. I would not worry too much about that unless it looks oily or wet. That would be oil getting past the rings. If you have smoke on a hot day, that is something you might want to do some investigatory work on. That is another sign of oil burning.

I have Auto tune and seems to have worked to adjust for flies out performance. Lately I have been hearing that if you want to use autoTune you need to do WOT runs in 5-6th gear in order to get good fuel trim suggestions. If you are not willing to go real fast and risk getting caught, AT might not be all it is cracked up to be.

I think you need a new map.

I have 2 Bros full titanium 4-1 exhaust, 2 Bros Juice Box and K&N air filter. I consistently average 39.1 mpg runnng 80-90 on the freeway.

The end of my pipe is slightly sooty, but no smoke and runs like a scalded bat outta hell, . It backfires on decels as well.

My 2008 ZX-14 gets 47.5mpg with 93 octane and the only mod’s I have are K&N air filter and two brothers slip-on’s but I’m at sea level with no hills and I weigh 160-170!!

I can believe that, Cooter.

My Connie averaged 47 mpg for my total trip (including sport riding the mountains and fine roads of NW Arkansas) and at times on cruise control in 6th (true overdrive) I was seeing "Current" mpg hovering around 57 for long periods of time.

On a standard fuelling and exhaust my 14 was showing 50.1mpg after its first 10,000 miles of life. I thought this is bound to drop but wo, its now on close to 12,000miles and has moved to 50.4mpg. I live at sea level, by the sea!!!!and surrounded by mountains and try to use the throttle wherever possible.

Rook Bro,
You got Auto-Tune on your bike??

Awesomeness!

It is a b nifty little gadget but I have not even scratched the surface as far as figuring out how to use it to best advantage. Romans and Dogo are the go-tos for that. Romans has a technique he has written up and sounds like he is convinced the conditions and basic technique are identical to what would happen on a dyno. The thing is you have to do some highly illegal speeds to get the results you are looking for. After I give his technique a try, I may be surprised at an even better improvement than what i got by just running about doing normal commuting and fairly safe, legal sport riding.

According to Romans, the trims I accepted after a couple months should have been no good unless I accepted immediately after a high rpm 0% throttle decel but all I can say is it seemed to work for me.

blue14.....engine wise my bike is as it left the dealer when new in 2010. I have fitted Galespeed wheels which save a little weight but that's it, its standard otherwise. Im in the UK and our gallon is different to a US gallon but I dont know by how much but that makes a difference I guess.

My guy at Kawasaki who also owns a 14, said that the Muzzy maps are crap. His runs the best on the Ivans map. Does any one have one?

2014 zx14r completely stock, except for a taller wshield. Has 9500 miles on her. Synthetic oil. Thought I would check the mpg for the first time on the highway. Probably averaged 74,75 mph on this particular ride. It worked out to 50 mpg (USG) , so I was pleasantly surprised with the result.

with a 2013 stock edition, in touring mode on challenging roads, at 50-80 km/h average speed... got an average 31.3 miles/USgall computed over a 3000 km journey

Your continuous having to change throttle is what's killing you.You should be getting around 35-40 mpg.Even higher.

I checked the BBW at a track day once and she was still getting ~25 mpg - I was amazed and actually must be driving her like an old woman on the track and that was some heavy throttle modulation ...

Not sure what the 14 gets, but the zx10 on the track gets 18mpg.

Full tank last pretty much three 20 minute sessions before the front
wheel starts lofting in the air and low fuel warning light comes on.

Even 20lbs +/- makes a big difference on keeping the front wheel planted.

I was at Ivan's a couple week's ago for his latest reflash.
My bike runs cooler,is smoother, takes the throttle much better, and makes more torque and horsepower.
We didn't dyno it so I can't say how much but it was a good increase for sure.
Popping on decel is gone, speed limiter is removed, redline raised...commuting mpg is 42-44.
On 1 loop up through the Catskill's with no traffic, my gas gauge started blinking at 224 miles.
I filled up at 250.5 miles and put in 5.183 gals...48.33 mpg.
I think it will easily break 50 mpg on a straight highway run.
I've been working with Ivan on projects for years so I wasn't surprised by the improvement but I was sure happy.

My '07 stock, except for Area P cans, got about 44 mpg(mostly highway)on a trip to Yosemite in the summer. It first came to 46 mpg but after comparing the 14's speedo to a known accurate source, the actual mileage was 44. My speedo appears to be about 4% over actual speed.
Another mostly highway trip of several hundred miles gave about 41 mpg but that was in cold, clear weather, about 25-50 degrees. The temperature gauge never showed more than 1 bar for much of the trip. I figured the cold temps lowered the mpg.
So I average about 43 mpg highway at 75 mph in warm weather and about 33 mpg city.

2015 14r here. Still stock with 29,000 miles on the odometer. I have been riding to a jobsite 50 miles one way for a week now and I can get 200 miles out of 5 gallons of 91 octane real fuel. I am a little hard on the throttle (turnpike with occasional triple digits) so I am sure it will do much better then that. I am very pleased with those numbers.

RE: Gas mileage

Just to update this thread...
I rode from Bennington Vt to Branchville NJ: 250.9 miles/4.97 gal= 50.48mpg
Next,Branchville NJ to Windham NY and back to Branchville: 261.5 miles/5.28gal=49.52mpg
Around town and commuting with stop and go and going through the gears seems pretty consistent at 44-45 mpg.
The bars on the gauge start to flash at right around 238-240 miles.
This is normal riding; ie: not trying to get high mileage.
42 lbs front and rear, well lubed chain, Mobil 1 15-50 in the motor.
Overall, I'm really impressed with the increase which is a byproduct of the flash, not why I had it done.
