1.7 lb.Speed cell battery
06/24/09 8:49 AM

Does anyone actually have a speed cell battery? They are supposed to weight 10 pounds less than stock, the weight is 1.7 pounds and they never need to be trickle charged. cost $250.

Don't think anyone on the board is using one, but a couple of guys on BL are.

Lot of weight savings for less than $300. Tough for me to justify though without first losing 10.5 lbs myself. And that just ain't happenin'!

Look at the bright side Dogo, it could be a lot worse..could be 100 lbs.

I lost 100 lbs about 5 years ago... even more if you count all the sh*t she took with her!

Most of us could loose 10 lbs for much less than $ 300.00.

i think someones drunk lol. to save 10 lbs for that price you realy better be in the top 2%.
cuz you aint doin anything unless your the "best" with that mod. IMHO.
BETTER SPEND UR MONEY ON PERFORMANCE UPGRADES FIRST. THEN GO BACK AND WORRIE ABOUT THATT.

No offence bro, but a statement like this shows how little you know about weight savings
on a sportsbike, even on the very porky zx14.
Rule of the thumb for a new liter bike is $100 per 1 lbs. of lost sprung weight.
Double that for a lbs. of anything that moves( rotates ).
$300 for 10 lbs. is just awesome!

Wave your hand a few times on couple of lbs. here and there and you'll never
experience what a really lightweight and uncorked 14 can do... other than straight line
and touring that is.

Drop close to 100 lbs. off your bike and take it through it's paces and I promise
you- it will WOW you with the things it can do!

IMO, if you were going for the ultimate street sleeper, then wheels, titanium hardware and just keep going is titanium axle bearing collar spacers in the wheels and just keep the wallet open is make a true sleeper out of it.

The 2% deal may have meant you are top qualifier, IMO. One light bike is one thing. Chasing weight for weight is another. So, a pound here and a pound there is I am guilty of that. But to buy-in on an expensive unit with any history of longevity is double the price of an OEM Battery?

Say, who will last longer is the test of 2% difference is more like break even or lose 10lbs off the body. The bike should act the same? Doubt it.

I think Mass has just about every mod short of boost on his bike, Local.

I won't be spending $300 on a battery yet but if the stock was getting weak, I'd prolly do it. Technology is fun and functional!!!!!

The "perfect street sleeper" has the CF wheels and all Ti hardware.
And also a lighter 220 mm rear rotor and a lighter Tokico brake caliper...
NOTHING gets overlooked- she's stripped completely!

At this point I've spent more in mods than what I paid for the bike otd last year.
I'm only drooling over some Ohlins suspension these days, want it bad!
Could have had my track weapon of choice (K8 gixer750), but can't have it all.

You're right Hub- the battery hasn't been tested much, but time will tell.
Doubt that the $$$ will go down anytime soon since the demand is so high.
The guys I stay in touch with have nothing negative to report about it so far either.

hey masszx14 i understand the weight per dollars, especially for someone like you and the mods youve done. but look at who's asking the question here. seems to me alaskarider is adding weight to the bike for touring reasons.
to me for someone headed in that direction the money spent outweighs its purpose. for someone like you perhaps its a steal. and i think we all know pound for dollar plus hp were the pipes we all have.
just think how many calories you could save if you switched from heineken to mich ultra yuck lol.

I just checked at my Kawasaki dealership... stock battery in ZX-14 is a gel battery and costs $270 from Kawasaki to replace... same price as speed cell, but 10lbs heavier. Maybe buying speed cell is not worth it to most people when their stock battery is still alive, but if stock battery dies, speed cell sounds like a real steal!

Alex,
You can get the same as stock yuasa battery from a bike repair shop for $102.00. You add the acid, hammer on the cap, and charge it for 6hrs. I haven't looked, but I'm guessing there is some sort of powder inside the battery that will mix with the acid to become a gel.

It's still 10 lbs heavier, but at least you'll lose less weight in your wallet!

Nice to know, red! I am pretty sure I'll go with SpeedCell when it's time to replace mine, though. But if my hopes fail and I don't have money at that time, I'll go with the yuasa :P

I know how you feel. I can't imagine you're too disappointed though. That is a sweet modded 07 you have. Another bike would = bye-bye 14 mods for me, too.

I heard that ~25 years ago. Always good for a grin though.

Hey, you get divorced, you loose 125 lbs and half your stuff. A few years go by, you gain it back along with half of somebody else's stuff.
