Yes indeed, I always recommend to leave those almost like they are loose. The rubber plug is inserted into the airbox and that is thin enough metal to cut into the rubber if you expand it too much with a snug tight down. That screw never comes loose on me as loose as I leave it.

here's another reason to keep any wellnut bolt kinda looser, actually for any plastic cowling piece, lol...mine i kept kinda tight on the textured plastics that run pretty much right under the handle bar ends and one of them just snapped in half after hitting a decent size bump on the highway lol, i just got done putting the new plastics that got messed up from a lady hitting me from parking and now got one more to add to the list lol

^^Speaking of that, I've been tightening down the two screws on each side that hold the lowers to the exhaust because i always find those loose. I see the plastic washers are cracking. Better start using blue locktight instead before I have the fairings cracking. IMO, the wellnuts work great for not shaking loose even if just screwed in flush. The fasteners that go into the frame usually don't come loose except for the lowers which do all the time.

yea, the ones that go into the frame never get loose on me, basically lets just admit that kawasaki did a really crappy job with the plastics on this bike lol

well i checked out home depot today, and they have them, they are called expansion nuts, didn't have the smaller sized ones that are used on the windscreen and similar cowlings, they are about a $1 a piece, better than 3 OEM, gonna keep searching i guess,

Dattaway; Just got back from NAPA. The wellnuts they sell are 1/4 x 20, not 6mm. We checked the catalog, and it's the only wellnut they sell. The strange thing is the well nut I pulled from my bike says D1420 on it. If you search online, every site has a D1420 listed as 1/4 x 20. My Kaw wellnut threads onto a 6mm bolt, the Napa 1/4 x 20 does not. What gives?

I bought the 1/4 20 "expansion nut" at True Value and ran an 8mm tap through it so I could use the stock bolt.

This is very valuable information, as these things are about 3 bucks apiece through a Kawi dealer. I know that 5mm and 6mm wellnuts are used on the ZX-14, but does anybody know if 4mm wellnuts are used anywhere on it?

Thanks. -bg

Donno about 4's,those ones pictured above will work for their intended sizes-BUT-they won't work right for the tank tab to foreman attachment point.See those thin flanges-That's asking for "lost wellnuts into yer airbox" incidents!Just my .02!!!!

yea you have a point there, i have to see if there is any way to put a rivnut or nutplate for that particular one, cause it seems like that area the wellnuts just get shredded up the fastest

The Kawasaki number is listed on another topic here-can't remember which one under "wellnuts".They won't shred if you don't crank down on em every time you tighten(the STOCK # ones that is).

I am looking for opinions on an alternative to the well nut into the airbox after noticing the same problem as many of you with it tearing and almost dropping in.

What do you think about these???

Jack Nut Threaded Inserts. Do you think a solid mount at that point would stress the plastic too much?

Thoughts?

might as well use small dry wall inserts lol, i think the wellnuts put more stress on the plastics, cause u can tighten them up more then the inserts. inserts usually just break off when they become too tight and the abs plastics from the bike are pretty tough to begin with.

If those are made of plastic, I'm sure it would not require too much torque to colapse the inner part. I jus got a new OEM wellnut and I keep it just barely snug. It never comes loose.

I've had a dozen on back order from my local dealer for about four months @ about $5.00 each.

Finally, I just picked up 8 of them complete with screws and washers on ebay.
Took about 10 days to get here.

...yes and the large ones on the side of the air box are Son's "o" bittses.
