RE: APE Manual Chain Tensioner

I thought of that, but I waited for 4 Months and lost patience. I figure that little springs is made of poor quality spring steel and when it gets hot it becomes lazy. Replace spring ? Or maybe a tad longer one or just remove cover and adjust factory one down one click, or,,,,, install APE. I got Lazy. APE was just to easy a fix and it won me over. I can turn a bolt while doing bike maintenance. No prob there. In the grand scheme of things it's no biggy and was easily fixed.

No more starting the bike under the cloak of darkness(Weeeee)before the boys get here. I hate when they call my bike Junk lol. In the nature of teasing I would do the same to them if they started their bikes and they rattled on start up. All in good fun U know. No matter, it's done and rattle is gone.

lol... Us guys and our razzing... Never let my bro-n-law live down that he put a Yosh on his Kwacker... He'd do the came if I put Steeda parts on a VW. Gotta take it easy on the forums, though. Shit gets taken the wrong way.

Dis little spring???

Yeah, I guess I could see it gettin' soft. But if I tore my stocker apart, I'd just make it a manual tensioner... like dcjens did here:zx14 CCT mod

Now you guys with you r back and forth you have thinking I should just leave the auto tensioner on there until it gets really bad...........I can't remember how long the rattle lasted. 15 seconds, maybe? I don't think it has ever gotten worse over 3 years of ownership.

What if I put the APE on there and decide to go back to OEM and then the rattle is horrible from over-tightening the APE?

15 seconds would be long enough for me to search out a solution. The cam chain on my '06 rattled for a second or two. That didn't bug me enough to worry about it. My '08 is still quiet as a church mouse... but that'll change, I'm sure, as the motor loosens up.

You already have a APE on the way, don't ya, Rook? Just put it in and be done with it... Enjoy your quiet start up.

Gotta wonder... How much $$$ has Kawi shelled out to dealerships for guys bring in their 14's, under warranty, because of a noisey cam chain. Enough to pay for a retooling of the 12r tensioner for the 14?

Ha...gotta have some fun here ya know!I'm always sayin stuff with a fun spirit(hopefully).Rookster said"what if I overtighten the APE?"You won't be going back to the factory one...I can't imagine why.Geez bro....you WON'T overtighten IF ya do it MY WAY!!!!!!!

Ya..I said it....MY WAY.In this case..."MY WAY" is THE WAY to get this deal sorted!!! (in all honesty...the instructions from Muzzy's(or Shnitz)(one of those two)...are exactly right.Course, they don't mention "preadjust"...that's my deal....NO ONE wants to have a flinging cam chain goin on.And it will IF you just stick that baby in there and THEN start your bike. Not good.Preadjust removes the possibility of ANY chance of a chain jump. It's so simple, even I was able to do it(and that's sayin somethin!)

Naaa, I see Rook trying to attempt that chain swap and there is no clowning around with thi$ $$$ move. It needs a certain setup you can't "feel" nor explain over the net, nor in a video.

Besides, You don't need to wind me up, I self whine.

Kids WON'T let me go out.

Hehheh- I know. You have to go out to the garage in 2 minute intervals and then come back to see what hell they have gotten into. That's what I did. I got a big gash in my forehead getting up off the garage floor. In a hurry and not paying attention to where my head was was going. I don't know where I hit the bike. I don't think anything got busted ---except for my head. The kids were intrigued by that---daddy comes walking in with blood running out of his head dripping on the floor. They laughed at that but were horrified that time they found a bunny that was decapitated by an owl. Sense of values a bit askew, Go figure.

You already have a APE on the way, don't ya, Rook? Just put it in and be done with it... Enjoy your quiet start up.
It's on the way. Igot a number of items for both bikes and they didn't have everything in stock. hopefully by next week, I'll get my stuff. Probably won't be starting the bike up for another 2 months though.

You're scaring me, Rook. Want another video?

Thank you very much for taking the trouble to make that vid for me, Hub. The CCT demo/explanaition will help a great deal when I get this apart.

If not bloody knuckles, it's heads up we are not distracted with the little "APES." Good lock with it.

I found it on E Bay and it looked real nice. I’m not usually a bling bling type of guy at all. But last year I blacked out the bike with smoked signal lights, tail light and changed most all the stainless steel faring bolts and some others out to black aluminum and it looked real good so I figured I’d throw this in the mix…I’ll post some pics of the cover.

Well I installed it this past weekend and it took all of ten minutes for sure....All I did was take out the old one and installed the new APE unit. I tightened it till I felt it touch the chain. Then started the motor and loosened it till I heard the chain then tightened it back down still it stopped and backed her out 1/4 turn and locked it down. She sounds great and it was no issue at all....Nice piece for sure.

RE: APE Manual Chain Tensioner

Variable #1:

The 15° Book Set Variable goes like this; Place crank at 15° past TDC compression. This stops a spring from rolling the cam backwards. Now set cam chain. This has the crankshaft unloaded and you cannot see the cam move, but you can see the crank move but it does not, correct? Are we on the same page we cannot view the cam walk under book sequence. Yes or no? Very simple is variable one.

Variable #2:

We have more a disagreement as to how one sets up a simple chain rung. There was a guy who tried all 3 variables and found out the 15° did not work out for his noisy cam chains. He then tried the engine running method that may be applied over at some CB1100F website with a 'sonic' boom happening in the crankcase called a bellowing noise you pull clutch in and it goes away kind of noise.

I have a bad case of that happening right now with the bike and it spits when cold. So I know through experience the sync is popping and would we use this as a running variable? Well, seems the hot setup for some are the lost signal about that off sync of a slide or fly that is lagging the other fly.

Fly pay per view I see you are in that camp of soup to nuts and I sort of call you being somewhat nuts if soup vs. nuts means anything. How could you slam that nut down on a 50/50 chance you didn't come around on a running-adjust-lag, "She sure sounds quiet to me" kind of didn't see the cam lag did you? Come on, gotta yes and no year ass is grass you do not answer either way says something is UP, right?

So, do I walk you to your rear wheel and point out a cam chain you can watch in real time? I can't let it go you be squid'inn UP the APE dragging your knuckles over that nut she's tighty righty.

Variable #3:

Like Tommy Edison take and drag you buy the ear you just bought a race piece and you feast your eyes on the back chain. Take your back wheel and just spin the shit out of it and watch the wah-wha-whip. Keep kicking it like you fired off a pulse is call it out: 1-2-4-3-1-2-4-3-1-2-4-3-1 timed pulse after the other did you see the WHIPPING of that chain over your back?

Yes or no, did I just whip-saw your minutes you honk-EAR'down on a nut under pulse pretenses. I present my evidence you on the back-cam-no-see = 15% move vs. no move why take a chance. The next point of apply is your starter motor on a cam chain kind of adjust till the digging goes away I now can't hear anything but a whizzzzzzzing is more shaving some, not gouging out some.

Some wild variables are you and that sonic kind of knows he is an expert and I am no expert for sure does he know his bike... Cough. I have no clue is me just watching a chain, a cam and a ramp I cannot see move. Slow what this nut case does is to hold that back wheel in gear and now I move the wheel up to the point I want to load the crank but not move it, I have all that slack at the chain and all that guitar string at the other end of the variable.

My next thought is; How, if I cannot see the cam walk, how, if I cannot determine if I locked down on a kick I saw that chain whip as if it fired off and moved in a fierce momentum down that chain-rung I think I'll guess here and tighten down? Have I made myself clear more on the variables? It's your bike and how you setup APE.

For me, I have to look at the 3rd way I think things out and that is more how the story goes; show me on any crank degree we turn the crank 90° I want you to point out if I honk-ear'down on a pulse-walkbackasswords no matter the syllables, we understand where the cam chain is at all times?

Say, Yes, you are one nut case.
Say, No, I have no clue what you just said.
Say, ShadUP already!

"It ain't my bike!"

have no clue what is UP with the 7 either so dare! Tank DAT!

<<< Rolls down the keyboard off the back of the trailer. Someone hit me so I have some sense back in my brainsign come gun'inn fur trophy you go adjust chain your way... And I'll set mine my way is slow me the cash window!

Yes, and the moral of the story is the DOHC gentlemen tried the 3 amigos and found out the most quiet one was the puzzle hatrickey fabio....

I got nut'inn For You... Head back to camp.
