rear wheel bearings? etc
04/20/10 9:06 AM

So the tech when he repalced my rear tire shown me that the bearing in the outer hub did not turn,,,wah wah wah,,,
So new bearing kit is ordered for the rear.

Since I have not replaced bearings before (well I did in my skate board), what does this involve.

Could I remove the old bearing carefully with some gentle tools and tapping from a rubber malet?
Could I install the new bearings with out the proper tools (as in can I stick my bearings in the freezerino for awhile to chill them (shrink them a tad), then use hot air on the bearing mount holes, then carefully pop them on...

Help.,,.,

ted if you ask around one side of the rear does not turn,it was that way on my new 14 when i got it ive seen many post on here with guys saying that, so i pulled the tire and sure enough only 1 side turns. so im assuming thats the way it is. maybe ill stop by the dealer and talk with 1 of the mechanics and see if thats the way it is supposed to be while its still under warranty.

You need a grinding wheel. You need a long drift with a flat tip. The grinder is going to do double work. A heavier hammer is the way to go both in and out.

You may mark the center collar, so a rat tail file if you need any dressing, pounding that flat drift right at the edge of that bearing and center collar.

Whack at clock numbers like cross over or use a star hammer pattern. The bearing needs to come out like do not cock the bearing by hitting the one side to cause the effect.

Keep that drift's tip flat and sharp at the edges.

Best way to start the race or bearing is to use a rawhide mallet. Home it straight and as flush as you can with the mallet.

Back to the grinder with the old bearing. With a screwdriver shaft, you let the bearing spin on the grinding wheel till it drops in the bearing carrier. This was prepped before you pounded new bearings in. If you use this method of one bearing over the other, the mallet should slowly get you there if you rather not use the big guy to send it home. You'll hear a distinct 'ting' or hammer sound change as it hits the base of the machined center hub. Stop hammering once you hear the change.

Slide the axle through, see if she glides right in? If it did, she is X to Y perfectly sent home square. Nothing you can do, you hear more ting the axle nut torques down the tiny rest.

Yep, that is the sealed, tight lipped, tight dragging bearing. Put some oomph into it, she rolls smooth is what you want to feel for. I can slightly rev the bike, the back wheel rolls forward on the center stand. Niceeee, and you want to warranty WOT?
