Issues with 3rd gear
07/09/14 1:23 PM

I maybe wrong and it's all in my head or this is just normal. Seems like at 4k rpms in 3rd gear the throttle is so choppy. Or any gear at 4k rpms it's jerky. It's really annoying. I don't know if it has always been like this or just started. Please help!

If you don't like 4k then shift to a different gear.

That doesn't help nasty. Of course I know that. Is this normal is all I'm asking because I don't remember it being this.

Check your chain slack. I bet it's loose.

Hag's got it. This bike acts goofy when the slack ain't right. It's usually the first place I go now when it starts acting the way you're talking. Usually I notice it in the way it shifts before it gets goofy.

Right on the head, nasty. The published slack dimension for the Gen 2s is unnaturally tight to the seasoned veteran... by feel anyway.

But as soon as you creep outside of that dimension the transmission gets notchy and your bouncing off either side of the cush drive during light throttle.

Nasty, Hagrid I think you both nailed it. I just went out and the chain seems loose. Will measure later. I knew i felt the chain flopping around on my last ride, but forgot about it.I suck at chain maintenence. So is it normal for the chain to have a lot of slack in it after first 2k miles?

Just went and checked the slack. 2 inches of slack. So is that enough slack to cause my problems?

Now I gotta figure out how to adjust this Damn thing. Different from my sv.

I don't what brand of chain Kawi put on this machine but it is of excellent quality. Once it has had its initial breakin stretch it rarely needs adjusting again. But still always check it, oil, and clean that chain frequently!!!!! You will get similar symptoms for all three of those basic maintainness procedures if neglected.

Transmission feels goofy? Check your chain. It's a habit I've been getting into and learning with this bike.

Thanks for the help. I'm glad this was normal. I should of known a new chain would do this.
