I so wanted to buy a track bike this year, and I had my heart set on a shiny new 07 ZX10R Special Edition…

The bike has been sitting on my local dealer’s showroom floor for the last 2 years. I am a big fan of the 07 due to the fact it has the under tail exhaust, I realise there are a number of big drawbacks (heat and weight being to of the biggest) but I just love the look.

There are however two problems:

Problem #1 My wife is adamant that three bikes in that garage is already at least one two many and thinks that if I spend any money on another bike it should be a dirt bike for my youngest.

Problem #2 The dealership does not want to come down on the price, they currently have it listed for $750 less than a new 09 (insane in my opinion)… and they turned down my what I believed was reasonable offer out of hand. It’s almost like they don’t want to sell it!

So a question to the brain trust… for those of you with multiple bikes how did you convince the other half that having a garage full of bikes was a required expense… or are you all single (possibly recently so i.e. swapped the bike for the wife). Note: One of the bikes in the garage is a new 08 650R bought new last year for my wife… So I already tried that.

First I'd sell her bike.... then I'd quit asking permission. ;)

See what the dealer will do if you buy the zx10 and a bike for your son at the same time. Maybe see if a friend will inqire about the 10,too. If they've seen you droolin' over it the last two years they'll be less likely to drop the price for you.
I've seen new '07's for $7999 (+ setup and all that BS) at the stealers around here. I'd think $8k otd would be a fair price on a new '07.
I've seen low mile '07's for $6000 obo on CL. If I just wanted a track bike, I might even consider looking for a salvage bike. Have to pinch pennies where you can if you're gonna pay for track time and tires!
Be patient the deal you want is out there.

Don't do it, I got my '07 CBR for $3000 off sticker and the dealer delivered the bike to my door (60 miles one way). It was raining on delivery day and I didn't want to ride a new bike home in the mess.

The dealer is either unrealistic (especially in this economy) or like you say doesn't really have an interest in moving it. Shop around, there are deals all ove the place.

On the other issue, I fired the boss a long time ago, (actually she fired me) so I don't have that particular problem anymore. LOL!

I just saw the first '09 literbike shootout in a European mag and it looks like the new R1 may dethrone the CBR as the track master.

What do you guys think about 9100 OTD for a 08 zx10?? I really don't think I can do better than 9100 OTD. I would have to travel 160 miles into WI to pick it up which is no big deal. IL/Chicago dealers have been dropping like flies over the last few months yet many of them are still trying to get 5-600 dollars "rip off prep"...oh I mean dealer prep on there bikes. I know they are in business to make money but many of them just aren't being realistic. I like the 08 CBR and the GSXR but no one wants to deal on those bikes. Every place I have shopped in IL the 08 zx10 as been 1k or more less than the CBR. WTF

If that's what you want, I'd say go for it! That's about what I payed for my '07 OTD two weeks ago. I looked at the '08 ZX-10 at Kawasaki City of Irving about a month ago, here's their listed online prices:

ZX1000E8F ZX10-R 2008

List $11,549.00

OTD (Out of State) $9,263.00

I didn't buy it because the ergos were too tight for me, especially in the wrists. If you're tall like me, check this out before buying.

Here's what I wanted, '07 Repsol replica but couldn't find one left over in stock.

That was $11500 - $12000 OTD in '08, I think. I paid 11K for my 14 OTD. My dealer gave me a price quote of $10,600 on an '08 busa. Sounds to me like 9100 is a really nice deal.

$9100, doesn't seam unfair to me, although there were '08's goin' for super cheap back in Dec.http://www.zx-10r.net/forum/showthread.php?t=67924, I have not been those deals since.

KD, about that trackbike, this one has been known to mop up around here and is for sale, http://www.zx-10r.net/forum/showthread.php?t=70410. Has been for awhile, too. Wouldn't be at all surprised if he took $4k.

Kruz, where'd you see the shootout?

They also have a 07 SE for 8299 plus 85 for processing, plus tax. 8908 OTD. They quoted me $8499 for the zx10 but it’s listed for $8799

Thanks!
I was hoping the new Yami would live up to the hype. Gonna push a redesign of all the others. I already saw a proposed design for a Kawi crossplane motor.
I'm surprised the CBR was towards the back this year. Did they f with anything since last year?
Looks like the new Gixxer needs some work!:)

If everyone goes crossplane, I really hope they find a way to make them sound better. It would take some getting used to. I don't think I'd buy an 09. There's just too much info to sift. Too much uncertainty while still paying a premium price.

09Kawi is the same bike as last year, if I recall. I think an 08 ZX-10 would be my pick. It was right on the R-1. And it it must be a lot more exciting to ride.

The ultimate in performance doesn't mean the most eciting to ride unless you perhaps are good enough to ride the bike to potential. The guy in the vid said there is very little engine braking at all with the R-1 and that sounds more boaring than the R-1 exhaust noise, IMO. I think the Kawi would be a lot better adreniline rush and it's pretty damn near as fast as the R-1. Straight line, sweepers, the ZX-10 would beat the R-1 and probabley a lot of the older literbikes would, too.

I am really stunned that he said the zuk was down on power. Not at all what I was lead to believe by specs (191 bhp). That sounds pretty good if they were talking crank hp and amazing if they were talking wheel hp. I think they might have been talking chit. Heavy, well, yeah...with those huge duals.

I loved the read and I feel some of the same way about my ST1300 as most here would call it a pig but its stable and smooth . plays ok in the twisties but itis a 750 LBs and hides it really well so to to me the ZX is a huge step in handling and performance is off the chart. I had a CBR600 a few years ago but got older and fater and the ZX will be sporty enough for me for long time . I agree we would all have a dozen bikes if money and space allowed I love both bikes for what they do well and its different for both . I dont ride the hard twisties with the fat guys very often anymore and is I do they wont have to wait 30 min for me to catch up on the Zx . I shocked a few on the ST but I also still would like to take trips out of state and here in TX that can be a whole days ride to the next state . I find it a wonderful thing that almost every bike has its own thrill and fun factor. Heck riding my Daughters fist bike a 250 ninja was fun though Im sure I looked like a monkey and a foot ball . but it tossed arond with no effort and if dropped I could pick it up like a minibike. I would never take it on the open road but it has its place and time .

Sorry late and rambling

Lost in TX and I dont want to be found ,
2012Yamaha Tenere 1200 for really wandering off the beaten path
2005 GL1800 Sold to another to enjoy
2006 ST1300 Gone but not forgotten
2009 ZX14 Also gone and will be replaced someday
some of the best of both worlds

Hero to zero in 12 months, that's the way it is in literbikes. The '08 CBR was the media darling for 1 year then comes '09.......bottom of the heap! This is why I didn't get excited about buying the latest and greatest literbike. Unless you can afford to literally buy a new bike every 12 months, you'll never be on top for long if having the "best" is what motivates you. I was actually kinda hoping the slowing world economy would throw a damper on the rapid pace of motorcycle technical development.... no such luck I guess. It's crazy now that product development cycles have gotten so short...... it absolutely kills resale value. A lot of times the manufacturers will change just for the sake of change, much like the concept of annual model changeovers that Detroit introduced back in the 1930's with cosmetic makeovers to new models. The desire to have the latest thing drives the American economy in an almost manic way. Interstingly, many times the unchanged literbike or 600 will be the best for that year because the changes in the other bikes went the wrong direction. I posted the '07 literbike shootout in an earlier post and this is an example. The '07 CBR 1000 was unchanged but the rest of the big four came out with "new and improved models" for '07 and the little Honda put them all on the trailer. It was the lightest and most refined and it showed on the track and on the street. I always thought they should have left the '05/'06 GSXR alone. They meddled with it for '07, gained lots of weight and lost lots of low and midrange for higher maximum horsepower figures. The bike was quicker in the quarter mile and posted impressive dyno numbers but slower on the track.

I'd talk to Smokey first. He bought one and then traded it in on another ZX-14. As I recall, he said the bike lacked midrange, vibrated a lot at cruising speed and was really stiff when riding the streets. It does have impressive topend though, definitely track biased more than for the street. 95% of these machines are ridden on the sreet according to recent statistics so something to think about. I'd see if you could get a road test before committing. Take it out and wring it's neck for 30 minutes and see if you can live with it.

It's almost unfair to be on the 08 ZX10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not gonna go into detail. Road with two buddies both have 07 CBR1000RR with carbaon fiber exhaust. When I say the ZX10 blew them out the water it's an understatement. When we stopped it was very quite. Then one guy says I need to have my bike checked something can't be right. My bike is all stock + Diablo Corsa III and I weigh 165LBS. Bike is well maintained.

I passed them like they were on 600's I am not joking!
