I dropped my bike
05/27/13 11:09 PM

I can't believe what I did to my bike...I feel like shit, today I was taking the bike out do the garage and I thought the kick stand was on But in reality it was not so the bike went down to the ground. I picked it up but I scratched the mirror the handle bar and I cracked and scratched really but the lower left cowling kawasaki 55028 0456. It took me almost an hour to remove this part and I'm not sure how I will put the new one back in place.
So this is what I need from you please, is there a video or pictures of how to remove all the plastics for the zr14r? I sow a video of a guy that tells you how to do it but in reality he does remove the plastics in the video( smoking in YouTube) so this did not help me at all. Then in this forum I saw a lot of picture step by step for the removal but it was for a zx14 so if you know anything else please let me know.
The second thing I need is what is the best place to shop online for this part, I find a few places that they say they have the part I need but I would like to know your opinion and if there is a place that will give member of this forum a discount.
Thanks

I did almost the same thing last week, I caught it before it did too much damage, just a surface scratch way under the lower fairing, it happens, try not to be too hard on yourself, dont know the best place to get plastic, but here are some fairing removal videos

I feel the pain, I am mad sorry bro, look at it this way, it's a pain but it can be repaired, you however, and your body cannot. So main thing is you are okay! Everyone of us makes a mistake like this, so take it in stride. I have a friend that says, "be thankful it is only a problem that money CAN fix).

Exactly right, Wolf, dont sweat the small stuff, I know it's hard not to when we do something to our bikes, but when things like dropping the bike get me down. I try to remember videos of people on their deathbed, wishing they could just get up and walk around, and contunue to live .....

I feel your pain. A similar thing happened to my 09 when I was letting it down from the stand...thought the kickstand was down....but no. What a gut wrenching feeling.

Sorry to hear this! I can relate to what you're going through, dropped my 09 busa a couple years ago the same way. I "thought" the kick stand was down. Peeps may laugh at me, but since that day I actually reach down with my hand and extend the stand all the way to insure that it never happens again.

I park mine in the chock and push against the stand with the outside blade of my foot. I too take no chances. You had to experience this horror to do this ie reach down! Worry not! Your not crazy! CCx14

I did the same thing with a new Z1000

Makes a grown man wanna cry!

Parts pit stop on line is the best place to get OEM parts for the lowest price

At least, that I've found

And be extra careful with that fairing work. Some of them tabs are extremely easy to brake. Make sure you follow that video (the Brock's one) with the care and precision of a surgeon

Good luck

Add me to the list of "Thought the kickstand was down" people. Did it with my ZX-10R a few years ago.

It sucked, but it didn't suck as bad as the time I ripped a valve stem off of the Husky's front wheel coming to a stop at 50 mph.

I feel for ya, alex....this is so freagin common...I know that doesbn't make it suck any less but So many members have told me about tip overs....It is almost always kickstand folded..

I dumped both of my beautiful babies. I dropped the busa twice a couple weeks back. I almost expected it the second time.

There is a busa mod where the top front of the sidestand is ground down a bit so the stand will fold forward a bit more.

I'm sure there is something similar that can be done with a 14s sidestand.

well, hope this doesn't cost you too much. Really sux ass to have to buy new OEM parts when the originals were perfect.

I'm in about a grand on the busa. Left undercowl, left side, bar end mirror, clutch lever, could replace the nose but not damaged enough to justify anything more than touch up. F$^%&ing kickstand is without a scratch....dam thing.

All I can tell ya, don't ever start the thing unless you are sitting on it. park in gear uphill. Do the kickstand mod. I'm going as far as to bungie or cable the kick stand at the forward lockout position. If there is something down there to hook up some something like that. I'll go through the PITA every damn time I park the bike. No damn way am I letting either bike fall again.

Sorry bro, fix 'er up. She'll be as good as new.

Well guys thank you very much for all your comments, I bought the part I need today, it should be here in a week, pay $107 + 21 for shipping and im crossing finger that when it get the part I will be able to put it back in place without breaking.
I was mad at myself because I could avoid this accident but nothing I can do know, I will be more careful in the future, the plastic will be replace in a week, the mirrow got a very little scratch at the bottom and a little bit of touch up paint took care of it so hopefully this nasty taste i have will go away soon.
Thank you again!

So it was the smaller black piece on the lowers ? I havent had my lowers off, does it bolt on to the other part of the lower from the inside ? I have a surface scratch on mine, cant really see it, but for $100, I might get another one ...

RE: I dropped my bike
05/29/13 10:03 PM

I called two kawasaki dealers in town before I ordered the part I needed, their prices were $145 + taxes...then I checked for kawasaki parts online and majority of the places had the same price, around $107 + shipping. What I found strange was that every place on the Internet (with good prices) that I called i did not get one person to answer the phone, I tried several times at different hours but everyone since to put me on hold and after 5 minutes I was sent to a voice message that was saying, please leave your name and number. After playing with the different option in thir menu I got to talk to an operator and she said if you want to place an order the only way to do it is by using the website so I placed my order with the kawasaki warehouse website because it look to me like a big solid company. The price was $103 plus $21 of shipping, I used my wife PayPal account and I placed the order (that was yesterday) so today My wife called me at work saying that this company called her asking $35 extra because the side of the item and that they are in Florida and we are in Nevada and it cost more. So my first question to her was $35 and they will cancel the $21 that wevalready paid right? She said I asked the same question and their answer was that the total shipping was going to be $56. I could not fucking beileve it, so after she talked to me she called them back and told that we only want to pay the $21 and they say we can't do that and she cancelled the order. So two things are coming to my mind, one that this company does false advertising and they try to get to with the shipping cost, the other one is that this company just takes order over the Internet and they send their bids to different motorcycle store to see who is the cheaper and when they can get the price that they are showing in the website they compensate their loses by charging ridiculous shipping changes.
I will give you guys a sample of what I order for my car online, I order four rotors and four pads online from a company out of state, the box was 72lbs and the shipping chargers was $52 for 72lbs.
Oh for those that might be thinking that I tried to overnight the cowling the answer is not i choose regular ground shipping that was 5 business day.
Today when I got home I ordered this part again from another website named partzilla, total price with shipping finish being $118 even cheaper than the other company...I wont be surprised tomorrow if I get a callmfrom them saying that shipping charges will be more...if this happens I will order from my local dealer
Thanks

Mmmmm, yeah. Not all internet storefronts are created equal. I've many times have gotten to the "checkout" price, only to fold at the shipping costs.

But, I've never had an experience like you've described here, requesting more money *after* completing the sale and checking out. I've never had that happen before...

Rook:

All I can tell ya, don't ever start the thing unless you are sitting on it. park in gear uphill. Do the kickstand mod.

I had to think about that 1st bit of advice for a moment, then the light bulb. Duh, it's in gear and will buck forward if the starter is thumbed. Be "on" the cycle, and ready, if / when, always.

alohaalex, you shouldnt have any problems with shipping cost at partzilla, BUT they are usually a little slow on shipping, and that part may not actually be in stock, they might have to order it, I called every kawasaki dealer in my area, and not one had it in stock ...

Did you look at Ron Ayers ? they are usually within reason as far as price, and they have been in business a long time, and I have never had a problem with them, the only problem with internet sites, is they usually dont have a running inventory for checking stock, so many times, you may order somrthing that is not actually in stock, and may take up to 2 weeks to get, this happened several time while I was trying to get a Kaoko throttle control ..

I have on my last purchase with Motomummy ! they gave me the price at the check out I thought the delivery for a pair of Yoshie slipons & a Puige screen was not right ! anyhow the order went through! not long after I got an email saying the order cant go through as the shipping cost was for One slipon only,so I paypal paid them the extra $40 for shipping cost, ive noticed some things in the USA attract massive shipping costs & other sites heaps cheaper shipping ! IMO $80 for delivery of this from Motomummy was still cheap !

Carabuser, you are correct the Lower cowling it is the piece of plastic that goes on the lower part of the motor around the oil filter area and yes it has a metal bracket that it needs to be loosed in order to remove cowling. It took me 45 minutes for me to remove the cowling and I still don't know how I got it out, I have a bad feeling that it will be a bitch to put the new part back in place.

Bean is onto something. You may get the part cheaper, but some store fronts hike up shipping to cover the hidden costs associated with the low price of the product. It is wise to go all the way to check out and compare shipping fees before pulling the trigger. MUHHUHUHUHUHAHAHAA. Like my post above some sites are just insidious! WATCH OUT!!!
