Too plug or not?
06/26/13 7:12 PM

Well, I already plugged it. I know there are as many opinions about whether to plug or replace as there are opinions on tire choice, but I thought I would bring it up. I caught a nail in the center of the tire in the middle groove, which leaked flat. I used a standard rope plug with rubber plug glue. It has held up so far for three days up to 160mph, or so.

If the carcass wasn't torn or something...it should be fine.I plugged mine once before...worked most excellent for the life of the tire.

I'm with green, it all depends on the damage done. A simple nail puncture in the center would not bother me one bit with a plug as long as it held air. Though I would replace the tire sooner than I normaly would. Before its bald.

I plugged a new rear tire (had about 600 miles on it) and rode it until it was worn out. Don't know if I'd try that with a front. Sometimes plugs hold, and sometimes they leak. Keep a close eye on it and you might get away with wearing it out.

I'd plug a tire. I road over 200 miles on a flat stopping 2-3 times to air up. I'm still alive (but don't try this at home, folks).

Thanks for all the feedback. I never have a problem plugging a tire as long as you keep an eye on it and do it right. I prefer "Mushroom Plugs" if you got em, but no one sells them locally. I think i will order a Mushroom Plug kit for the future. I always suggest using rubber plug glue with any type of plug that you may use. When using a Rope Plug I seem to get a better seal with the kind that are twisted opposed to the more smooth ones. I think this may be useful for those that have wondered.

Sure, I'd plug a tire, too, but...

...am I gonna run a plugged front to 160? Probably not.

Let me put it this way: Is *your life* worth replacing a $150 tire?

Wanna run fast? Great, all good.

Going faster requires better running gear than "standard". Your hardware shit, and your head, have gotta be together.

*Your life* is priceless to us. Dont fuck it up.

..never got a flat on the front..but yeah, I'd think before plugging a puncture on a front tire. If I did it, it would be a touring under 70 mph only tire.

No problems here. Hammer time does not seem to mind. Holds air. If I had my druthers, I'd run rope for tires. I didn't hear this from anyone; I've read the directions and the warning; but to speculate that the lawyerage speak was 'did you go over our speed limit of safety?; wink-wink; we'll loophole that 160 and rise you a mile an hour is I think these are safer then the package tells you?

I'm not letting up on the gas for some plug that has shone me how my truck tires were plugged up front and rear and I rode them till they plum wore out. Zero rope problems. Just buy the quality kit for the better rope.

Hub is the voice of experience, and that carries a lot of weight in my book.

Now, I'm gonna go kiss the grandkids goodnite, tell'em how much I love them, and ponder about that buck-fitty tire that might cause me (and them) grief.

You ken this risk management style? Think: what's important to *you*? Another mile at 160+, or another look into those loving eyes? How to get both? *Manage* the risk, and throw money at it when necessary and possible.

I've run a plug tire to the cords before with no problem but that was before I had the responsibilites that I have now, 150 is worth it but that tire won't be bad as an emergency spare.

Hub is a skilled rider who knows how to manage risk, and I believe, has a great understanding of his, and his machine's, limits.

Using the patch/ plug from the inside of the tire is the best option depending on the damage caused by whatever poked the tire. Rode on two rears repaired like this . My $.02

Patching from the inside is the correct and best way. However, If I'm going to dismount a tire just to patch it, I'll replace it while it's off the rim. No string plugs for me. Just for emergency use. I've seen them cut through by the cords in the tire and fail. I'm not crashing or getting stranded over $150 bucks.

Emergency Temporary Patch is fine. I would just replace the tire, its not worth it. Just my opinion.

I work on the assumption that if something is going to fail it will when you least need it to.

As has been said, is riding around on a plugged tyre worth the risk?

For that reason I purchased tire insurance with my bike. $17 a month gives me up to 2 new tyres a year and 1 new rim. As long as tyres are over wear indicators and legal tread they are covered.

I would plug to get me to shop to get new tyre but I would also ride in a more subdued manner while on a plugged tyre.

Anyway it is a personal choice. Just hope you live with your choice.
