Replacing sprockets and chain need some tips please...
08/16/09 4:58 PM

My new sprockets and chain arrived the other day so I was going to try and get them installed.

Looking at the Service manual it says I have to remove Clutch Slave cylinder and then after that bleed the clutch.

Does anyone have any how to's on this??

I've bleed brakes before so it isn't that hard and I guess it might be time to install some Galfer lines while I am at it ;)

Any tips you can throw my way are appreciated!!

I did read about using an impact wrench to get the front sprocket nut off on another site...

bleed the clutch?!?! Really?? I have to take a look at that. From what I know is u drop it in a gear and loosen the front sprocket in one quick motion

I don't have a manual handy but ...drop the clutch slave cylinder to change a sprocket?? Sounds a little wack to me, I'd look into that a bit further. You will need an impact wrench or a very long cheater pipe to bust that front sprocket nut loose though.

i just looked through the manual, and you're right, you do need to take off the clutch slave cylinder before you take the sprocket cover off. Now I haven't looked at my bike yet to see how its actually all attached, but by looking at the pictures, it looks like you can leave the cylinder attached to the cover when you take the cover off and just leave it hanging by the hose, let me know if that works and when I go riding tonight I'll take a look at it more closely

Needed a 3/4 inch rattle gun to get the nut off my countershaft, 1/2 inch wouldn't budge it or the extended breaker bar

The workshop manual has a procedure for taking the clutch slave cylinder off, basically tie the lever back to the bar before touching anything then push the piston back in when you take the cylinder off

Exactly what size socket did you use to pull that front sprocket nut off? I have an 06 and I bought a deep well 27mm 12point but it didnt fit too well. Might need a 6 point. What is the correct socket to use?

geeze thanks guys.

I used a 27mm 6 point. The larger hex on that nut will take a 35 or a 34mm wrench and you can turn on the 27mm at the same time...that is if you need to. But DO bend that lock washer down or that nut won't turn at all. just have a look at the tutorial. Any questions, I am pretty sure we can address them for you.

my front sprocket came right off with a 1/2" impact. just an fyi the plastic gasket on the slave drive will be really brittle from the heat so be very careful if re-using it, mine cracked I think it was under $20 you may just wanna change it out. just keep that pison pushed in and you shouldnt need to bleed the clutch.

I followed the "How to" and had no problems. Can't go wrong with pictures.
