Tail Bags /Heated Grips
04/05/11 6:27 PM

Has any body tried any of these tail bags yet ? I see quite a few out there. I was looking at the OGIO STEALTH, it is $120 in the Stealership but can be had for $70 on the internet. Price is always a factor but ultimately I will buy what ever works, so if you have some thing that works let me know.

I try to ride all year round but Vancouver BC has not been co-operative this year. At 52 years of age I finally broke down and bought an electric vest and at 53 I decided that heated grips would be an asset, but that was as far as I got.
I will be 54 in a weeks time and plan to ride next winter with heated grips. Has any body fitted an after market pair if so what make and how well did they work? I have also thought about trying to trasplant a pair from the old mans touring 14, any body done this yet or any other ideas?

Recommend you read up on the the threads and use the search feature, many times what you ask has been discussed in great detail previously.

I ordered "Hot Grips Heated Grip Kit - With Inner Isolation Ribs 475-875" from Amazon and put them on my ZX14. I recommend you go to Hot Grips website (google it) and order direct, and be sure to ask them to cut out the holes in the ends.

I had to do that myself, and it was a pain in the kneck.

In any case, assuming you get them direct from Hot Grips with the ends holed so you can put the bar ends back on, just get a tube of grip glue and put it on the bars first, then slide the grips on and don't touch them for 24 hours.

For the throttle side, I just oriented the nub the wire comes out of slightly to the back of the bike, but still pretty much pointing down. So when I twist the grip, it doesn't swing to far forward. Then I left enough slack so it doesn't pull when I twist the grip, and zip tied it to the bar.

The heat control switch they provide is useless. Get a first gear heated grip controller, unless you want to fool with mounting it, get the semi-mounted version and just velcro the module with the heat control knob on it on your ram air cover or something.

Any way you look at it, you will end up having to run positive and negative up front to the heat controller's relay, because you can't tap any of the OEM wires due to the amp draw of the grips. I tapped the positive lead to one of the front running lights for the relay's sense lead so the relay will only feed power when the bike switch is turned on.

Definitely a different price range, but I've had a great experience with the Kriega US40 set. I use a single bag for commuting, and have used the full set to pack for weekend trips easily. I wouldn't hesitate to buy them again, I've 'tested' them at excessive speeds and in heavy downpours and they're easy on/off the bike.

I would suggest a pair of heated gloves too.The heated grips are only good to about 30 degrees than the gloves will go colder.

I don't plan going lower than 30F, but will be wiring my jacket line up with stand coax connectors in the cuffs for heated gloves.
