Tires
05/26/11 3:03 AM

Okay...well,my steel cords are now showing on my rear Pirelli Angel ST tire.Verdict for mileage.....thumbs down...WAY DOWN.Friggin tire only has 2,600 miles on her.BOO! No more angels for me...going back to the Diablo.Just bought one (new) for 113 dollars at Superstore.Free shipping.I KNOW I'll get around 5K out of the Diablo.Just as good a performer as the Angel. And these Angels are supposed to be...."The new Pirelli High Mileage Tire"...hmmmmm.....They're droppin the ball on these ones. It's my second Angel on there....first one didn't fare much better...but I thought it may just be a fluke or something.I DO NOT RECOMMEND the Angel for high mileage at all.(sorry Pirelli...wish I could say differently). The Pirelli line of sport tires however(including their sport touring's)are the grippiest and smoothest tires I've ever run.Period.

Blue I just put on some road pilot 3’s and have fallen in love with these tires just rode them in some heavy rain and it felt like the rode was not even wet and got 8,000 miles out of my road pilot 2’s so im expecting about the same or better on the 3’s

Hi Blue I hope this was just a fluke in the series of tires sold to you. Still running strong with the Angels and have been slamming the hammer pushing the tires, excellent wear so far 5000+ on this set...

Honestly...I've got no idea how they wear down so fast.I got something like 5,000+ miles from my Stradas. These are supposed to be the replacement tire for those....i.e.,better mileage. As far as I know,I didn't change my driving habits at all.It seems to me....at first, the first thousand miles or so,they look(ed) perfect...like they weren't really even wearing.THEN..."suddenly"(it seems ),here they are, flat spot in the middle...sides are wearing pretty evenly, but the friggin cords are showing.IDK what different thing I've been doing. No burn outs.No skidding.I tried to crank er up on the curves and ease out on the straights....so IDK.This mileage to me though is just not okay. You know they have this little stamp on the sidewall...24 hr mileage champion or somethin like that.Sheesh...not mine.A straight through trip to California...without stopping(if it could be done)would be 1300 miles give or take. That means ONE trip to Cali is all this tire could muster?Even though I don't think I'm riding different....I must be.There's no other way they could die out so fast.I gotta say here..these Angels are the best handling tires I've used...equal with the Stradas or Diablos. So guess it really won't matter much anymore if I just go back to my ol'faithful Diablos.

It doesn't make much sense to me...here you have those tread grooves in the center there....there's a good 1/16th of an inch depth in em.And steel cords showing through on the part that doesn't have those center grooves.I would think 1/16th of an inch would be "plenty" for another few hundred or so miles.Apparently not

It seems like the more deeper you get in the rubber, the faster it shreds away once you get past the outer layer(if there IS one on there).

Let me ask ya'll this...what size tire are you runnin with your Angels?Mine were 180/55's Both times.

There's a HUGE difference between 2600 miles and 5000+.IDK....strange.

Okay....I want someone,anyone,...to go onto my YouTube channel and look at the vids that say"entering clearwater"...and "nice sweepers"...you tell me if my riding style is anything like yours.Seriously.Maybe I'm just way off here concerning my riding habits.http://youtu.be/xYvMBsdNn_w

You know Coot...I did try those Pilot 2CT's....I didn't like the way they felt in the hard fast corners.Just something about em made me feel unsure they were gonna keep gripping.IDK what it was....the front however lasted for two tire cycles. So that was cool.If I recall...it's been a while now...the Pilot mileage wasn't much better than the Angel I just went trough.MAYBE....4,000 miles, but I'm not positive.Lots of guys swear by the Pilots,I know.I wonder how many Pilot users have tried the Pirelli lineup.Gotta say...I've put my Pirellis in some dastardly situations....truly didn't know IF they'd hold or not...they've never slipped on me yet.Not once.

I think what's happening with my riding/tire use...I'm for some reason getting more comfortable with my bike...even into my 4th year now.I'm finding new ways to carve and run the corners and such. It's gotta be that. And I think that my confidence in my bike's performance is gaining.I must be going faster.I have to be.Nothing else could explain a tire wearing so quickly, when others are pulling down like 6,7 thousand miles on theirs.I don't do burn outs.Nor skidding. But possibly the rpm range of downshifting/upshifting and how I'm doing it and such is actually wearing them quicker.IDK.
I've tried to tone back the straights speeds.I'm usually cruising at 80,85+ mph.THAT might be doing it as well.Corners,up over 100 easy. And the corners here are BIG azz ones...not tight twisties. You can get a good run with these corners here.Dig in deep.Accelerate all the way through and out.Shift in midcorner and stuff.Great roads .

blue07: Contact Pirelli and let them know. Maybe they'll give you a discount. Back in the olden days, I had a problem with Goodyears, let them know, and I got a free tire.

Ya Alg8er...did that..nicely.Not expecting anything back.Just thought they should know .Thanks for the tip there.I won't stop buying Pirellis because of this.Too bad they ditched the Stradas.Maybe they'll bring em back, who knows? They get enough bad mileage complaints from customers....IDK.

It is hard to believe their "new" tire didn't last longer.I've NO idea how that happened! My second one....still poor mileage. And I thought I was takin' it easier on this last one There's several spots on the center that are barely starting to show cords. And the rubber is cracking across the tread in those spots.

Hey Blue 190/50 is what I'm running with...Put the Angels' on at 7500 last October and since have put 5500 miles on them. Haven't done much of twisties since the Dragon so most of the miles have been high speed straight line runs. Like you said, you more at one with your machine and just ripping up tires. IDK what else could explain...Pirelli's are the only other brand I've been with since switching from OEM Bridges and went thru two rears within the first 7500. Anyone else having the Blues with Angels

Ya...going with the rear Diablo this next one...then...we'll see...maybe back to the Angel.IDK.It's definitely NOT the cornering that's causing it.Gotta be my straight line takeoffs...not burning out..but hard takeoffs.Guess I best slow up a tad. It's just so darn fun to feel her spool up....like no other vehicle on the road! Those Angels are really hard to beat...sweet performance that's fer sure.

That 180/55 is shaped a bit different...somewhat thinner tread in the center as well.I should give the 190/50 or 55 a shot next time around.See if that helps.

I'm just "going faster" and don't realize it Easy to do with this bad bird .My corner speeds "before"...like the beginning of last season, were in the 100 range,120.stuff like that. This season I noticed several times I was cornering at 140.WTF?IDK.Death wish?

You know,I can get off the seat pretty well, and get leaned over with my body pretty well...but I just can't seem to get my leg out there.IDK what the heck's keeping it from pointing out at the right angle. So I usually end up keeping my knee in,and doing the rest of the positioning.Anyway....it's not really about "can you touch down"...not to me.It's diggin into those curves and whalin on through. When I'm leaned in and positioned,I KNOW I'm pretty close to the road. And the bike itself is leanin way over.It wouldn't surprise me any if I was able to reach down there and touch the pavement...I know it's close.

I used to grind peg on my 954rr and cbr 600 but cant get the 14 far enough over to get the peg and im scared I will grind faring to if I get it that far. And as techniques go its all whatever your most comfortable with in the corners you want to be able to catch it if you start to drift and at high speeds feeling is everything be safe not sorry start slow I used to practice in parking lots dragging knee at 10-15 mph just going in circles left than right getting lower and lower good luck.

RE: Tires

Blue. I have always been a Pilot guy but had bike with half the displacement/weight so completely different situations. I first put a pilot power on the rear (1st tire tried) and kept the 2CT which was on the front when I bought it. I got somewhere around 6,500 miles before I picked up a nail in the rear. Yet I will never buy that tire again because the middle wore down with in a few hundred miles and I was not riding hard last year at all! Just too soft IMO. As for the 2CT on the front, I feel a dual compound tire on a bike this big is a bad thing. It will never wear evenly. Mine was cupped from the start. This year I got a great deal on the Pirelli Dialbo Corsas and just went with them because of the money at first. A lot of people around here are talking about the Angels (curiously) which made me think I should have bought those at first but now I'm pretty satisfied with the Diablo Corsas so far. I'll have to check later, but I think I have put around 2K on them in the first month, maybe a little less, and I really don't notice a flat center yet. I run most of the time with loaded full luggage which compounds my rear tire wear also. I think for just being the 'OEM' grade for Pirelli these Corsas have done well. They have very neutral feel as well. I have been getting quite a bit more adventurous with my riding this year as well, power wheelie-ing and leaning into faster turns even in the rain never having a scarey moment yet. I am actually afraid of how long these will last because I have second rear that I got in the deal and I'm wondering if I'll even need it this year? But then again it hasn't really heated up here yet either. When I replace the second rear I will try something else but only because I would like to know how each tire performs on this bike before I settle into just one. So far Pirelli seems like the one especially with it's price point!

And yes, Blue, your more aggressive riding is wearing your tire. You gotta pay to play! lol
