Tire wear impressions
06/27/13 1:08 AM

I know quite a few of you ride quite hard, and have replaced tires (some several times); but I thought I would post my findings. I got in on the free Pirelli Angel GT front tire promotion, but I'm not ready for new ones yet.

It did get me thinking about how well the stock tires were wearing. So I went and actually measured them. The OEM's are 5/32 from the sidewall edge to the sipe as it moves tword the center. The center sipe measures 4/32nds. Which is what I figured, since quite a few of those miles are highway. The New Pirelli's are 8/32nds deep, in any groove.

This means to me that I am a little more than halfway worn on the rear tire, and means I should be in good shape to buy a second metzler and run that with the original front. With all my other bikes I have been able to go 2 rears to a front. I am at 4600 miles on the bike.

One thing that gets me, is people saying the OEM tire is junk; or wears out too fast. I can understand if it doesn't handle well, or rain traction is poor, but based on how mine is wearing; I couldn't be happier. I read a lot of posts that say this thing eats tires and that I probably wouldn't get more than 3K miles out of it. Happily this is not the case.

If I rode it like I stole it, and was on a racetrack; I could see. But long gone are my days of trying to get a knee down on the street. And as such, I ride in F-2 mode almost exclusively. Why not let the computer save your tire? Is the extra .2-.3 tenths of a second on the street all that important? I guess, not to me. Its got plenty of power, and I've never even had it on - KTRC OFF.

So Hub (and others), where you were posting about tire life in the thread where you were giving your impressions of your new '13 bike; if tire wear is an issue, ride f-1 or f-2.

Say what you want, I'm a sissy; I know it. I only get the rear OEM tires worn down to the elephants trunk or so, leaving around 1/4" of unused rubber. I still have all the fun I desire.

I got in on the pirelli promotion, knowing I would need to replace the tire sometime this year. I have 3k on the bike and stock tires. 90% highway miles (140 miles a day). I expect all of my rear tires to have huge flat centers, there just isn't enough turns to wear anything down. Is that what "squared off" means? I have rode my bike in the rain quite often. No real issues. I will be looking for better dry braking performance.

On the stockers, my chicken stripe is right at a cat's or catfish whisker. The rear is still U but beginning to show a - flat at the center. I mean, slight wear @ 2,000 miles [give or take a 100 miles]. I too am done with the knees down. I sit upright so I'm not tempted to sit off seat... OK, maybe slightly.

I've been a good boy with the speed limit and I'm getting used to the lane changers no matter what speed really. So I look less in the mirror for 'gumball charlie.' I have more concentration moved to the front to watch 'door slam her' try to slam me and I'm about to order a go is my pro to do a little tire R&D with the disconnects and see WOT occurs?

My goal is to leave some dunlop on a nice fat white stripe with the camera rolling. I can't wait! It may take awhile for this, because of the way [I ride] these days. I assume this contributes to the longevity of the tire looking almost new like [U]: in between that swingarm. And yes, on average I'd say I am 50/50% on the button exploits. I'm having fun with the googa switching. Very interesting to feel it change from mild to wild.

Is that what "squared off" means?

Yep, need to get more corners into your riding mix if you're squaring your tires.

When was this promo? On the R, I'm running a mich radial on the front and the OE bridge battleaxe on the rear. The front is telling me it's not even sweating so lets get into that corner a little harder. Lets put it another way. One tire says, 'push me: we are that sticky a feedback.' Whereas another tire says, "Oh don't do that: I can't handle that same move:" is that it just lets go.

I'm trying to figure out the 3rd variable to the tire's feedback? Is it an either or thing? So if the promo was a free front, yes, I think the promo worked for me/them was to buy the rear to match. So right now I'll be swapping a different round of brands in no particular orderback or front? That was my fault for not waiting for a backordered part. I'll be mismatched again.

That says, how well will the battleaxe feel up front? A dunlop in the rear? So I'm out of this if you wanted to compare a set vs. set. I'm set at front brand vs. rear brand.

10,400 mi. and counting on the 2012 OEMs. I estimate I've got at least 2/32 left on 'em, but I'm not looking at them right at the moment, I just remember they're still good to go.

I read a lot of posts that say this thing eats tires and that I probably wouldn't get more than 3K miles out of it. Happily this is not the case.

The only time I hear about tire life is when someone telling me they get 2.5-3K miles on a rear tire. I've neer been close to touching any wear bars at 3000 miles. I haven't gotten less than 6K out of my tires in the last two years and I use tires designed for track and street. I never have used a sport touring tire.

I don't know why some people get such low mileage out of their tires. Glad I get high miles because that is how afford aftermarket stuff that does not need to be replaced.

I got in on the free front, Pirelli angel GT.

I had been thinking of buying another rear metzler, to go with the oem front, since I try to get 2:1 wear. Now, it doesn't look like that will work. Ill have to monitor the front tire more carefully, now.

The stock front has "some" accelerated wear on the left side. Im not sure if the rear was slightly misaligned from the factory, or if its our road crown in Michigan, or the fact that I like to ride upright with my left hand propping myself up a bit that caused it. Heck, it might even be that I make more left hand turns, than right. But I doubt it. I did check the alignment marks somewhat regularly, but I guess they could be slightly off.

Now, I hope to make the stockers last the rest of the summer; but am doubtful. I just passed 5K miles
