Looking at a zx-14..???
06/29/09 12:34 PM

Hey guys and gals,, Im newbieeee, and I have a few questions.

What is the difference between the 06-09 zx-14? I think the 08-09 are the same bikes being updated from the 06-07 right?

Also Im a bigger guy 6-2 275, no gear,, and I take up almost all the room on my 2007 fz6 as it is. When I sat on the zx-14 the other day,,, the green one,,,,,on my love that color! The pegs seemed a bit high , as my knees were hitting just above the crease in the gas tank.

I thought a set of rear sets would work,, about $400. Then after lerking on a few sites it seems the buell footpegs lower it about an inch,, just what I would need and cheap too. Its funny alot of guys like to use the Uley peggs on the 1125R too.. That was a bike on my short list ,, until I sat on it and felt like I was really riding atop of the bike. Plus all the issues with them.

So those two questions are first and formost. A direction to the Uley footpeg mod,, or a place that sells a good quality rear sets.

I have a line on a 2008 left over,, dark blue,, pretty nice clolor, almost black for $9100.00 . And they are giving me $4k for my bike. It has 3.5K miles on it.

O,, on a side note I sat on a busa too, and fit fine. The gauge pod and materail looked right out of a high end euro car. Very very nice. But it was about $2k more. And Im at my limits right now.

So before my bikes value goes too much lower, I would like to get on a bike that really fits me, and is more substancial.

So let me know guys and gals...and thanks for your time.!!!!!!

I recently purchased my 14 after spending a number of years riding a cruiser (had also ridden sportbikes years back) and I couldn't be happier. I'm 6'2" and the bike fits me almost to a "T". I've added Heli-risers to bring the bars up slightly, and a slighlty taller DB shield, and that's about it. I bought my bike to tour on, to ride for hours and days on end and so far she has not let me down one little bit. She can be ridden with ease, can be very forgiving when just puttering along, cruises at any speed you want completely effortlessy and has about the smoothest power delivery of any bike I've ever thrown a leg over.
Personally, I think the front 1/2 of the "Busa looks good, while the back 1/2 looks like the face of a smacked arse (aka: very ugly).

I say go for it, you won't likely be disappointed at all.

Power wise, I am spoiled and would not change but to change to a quicker bike that was more comfortable for a larger body. Butt I am stuck with the 14 over a Busa, being that is even worse as a sitter.
I had an SRX 600 single Yamaha that was more comfortable seat position wise but the handlebars would numb my arms.

So, I removed the rubber cushion from the foot pegs to lower the range somewhat. It didn't help and the Buells were too weak looking against the OEM. I stand up for bumps and that is a lot of weight on the pegs, so I felt more confident with the stock pegs.

You might want to install a pair of handlebar risers to stop the numbness on the bias weight forward on the wrists. It sure cured my numbness with that small elevation change.

Other than leaving it stock or modding the piss out of it, she has not given me a lick of trouble other than other bikes and cars have no chance winning being it is basically stock and I had my balls serviced at 500 miles.

If you want to save some money you could do the buell peg modification. They have a set that works pretty good with the 14, a little modification is needed, but nothing serious.

I dont know where you are from, but the price sounds resonable. However I always work these guys over, so I would try and get the new bike price down. Either that, or make sure they are not going to add on any bs setup fee. Good luck!

Im in the midwest Ham,,, Also I LOVE,, I mean LOVE working over sales men,, being in sales, I know how to work them.
Thats almost the best part,,, I love car shopping and ask others when they are ready to buy,, let me help them out.

And Hub, I seen the Buell pegs, and I guess you have to drill out a bigger hole or somthing to mount these. If I do need new rear sets I seen Vortex has some nice ones. $374 on Ebay.

Also Your aviator freaks me out,,,!!!!!!! We have a few of those in our business ,, and I just hate running across them. Plus Im scared to death of any spider,,,,,,just an fyi for ya.

This bike in question is the Dark Blue, almost black. Does anyone have this model with good pics? I have only seen a few on Ebay.

Im really close to riding 2 hours to the bike shop and ridding the zx-14,,, and see if they can met me half way at $4.5k cash out and my bike.

The 2008 is at $9100. No fees, set up,, I pay the tax and plates at the dmv.

When are the 2010 coming out to the showroom? Is it Sept.? This is the only other way I can think of to work a lower price on the 2008.

I just seen a 2007 fz6 go on ebay with sinilar miles as my bike for $3700.

I have my ride listed in a car/bike magazine local for 30 days,, at a price of $4994. See what shakes out there.

Thanks all again.

I dont have any pictures, but I have seen one of those bikes in person and really like it. I think the way the bike looks black until you get close then you see the flake has a blue tint to it is pretty trick.

I like what Jack has going on here. You got to like a guy that works on his bike in the house. Plus the carpet makes me get the song "stayin alive" in my head.

Jack is also in this thread, along with a couple of friends.

I'll keep this short... I am 6' 2" 220 no gear.

I only rode cruisers, and was about to buy a Vulcan 2000... then I sat on the 14. I slept on the idea for over a week, did a ton of research and decided I would see what kind of a deal I could find. I found a brand new 2007 in candy plasma blue at a local dealer... I loved the color, but never expected to find a brand new 2007 in May of 2009! I worked the dealer down to $8,900 out the door (no tax in NH!) and it was a done deal.

I could not be happier with the decision, the bike is just flipping amazing. Smooth, comfortable, ridiculous power, stunning looks, AMAZING brakes... just thinking about riding it makes me smile. JUST DO IT!!!

Congrats, thats the bike I have too. After the new wears off if you decide to mod it, you will be even more impressed.
I highly recommend pulling the secondary butterflies, a full exhaust system, Power Commander and remap. With these simple mods it will evolve into a true Superbike performance wise that will outpull a stock 08-09 and is lighter too.

I have decided that this season I am just going to get really comfortable with the bike stock, and spend some money on some quality riding gear. The first thing I'll do is the flies / PC in the spring I imagine, but I've got quite a list going for other mods as well. I would like to toss a Mag-Knight on her too... I wish they still had color matched units left for my bike though.

At least that is the plan for now...

Like others have said, the sapphire blue in the black is very hard to notice in pictures or in low light. It looks almost black, but when the sun shines on it the sparkles of blue come out of nowhere. Personally I love it.

I have a few more pics in ZX-14 pictures forum under the topic "Vynil stripe on Midnight Saphire Blue". The bike really does look black almost all the time. It's only in very bright sun that you will sees some blue. Actually, you see the blue flake more in artificial light after the sun has gone down.

To answer you initial question, the 06-07 models are the G1 model. The 08-09 models are G2. The styling is identicle between all years. The G2 has better midrange power. The bottom was also improved but you could get the same improvement with the fly pull mod on a G1. I pulled my flies on my 08 and it made only a very small difference. The bottom end on the G2 is pretty much all there. The G2 had to meet stricter emissions compliance so it has a catalitic converter in the header (as well as 1 in each can) which means you can't go catless unless you go full system. The G1 had only a cat in each can and many guys just went with slipons with good results. The G1 pulls a little higher into the power band but with full system and map or tune i don't think anyone is complaining about there G2 one bit.

If you do not want to spend a dime on mods, ever, a G1 is probably a better choice. A new bike with 0 miles obviously has to be a G2.

Unless you are a lucky son of a bitch like me and find a 2007 leftover in 2009! Got mine three weeks ago! However I would have gone G1 or G2 strictly depending on color and price... you can't go wrong. I think if I had found both the 07 in CPB and an 08 Saphire paint job would have been a tough call for me!

He guys,, I went and rode it today,,,,, seeing it in the back shop through a window,, I knew it was MINE!!!!!!!

It really does look black,,, then a dark dark blue in the sun,, with the flakes..

So I took it out for about 15 miles,,, tons and tons of torque! It pulls in any gear ,,, well except 6th,, doing 40-50mph. I love it. Way way more power than Im use too. It gets to 100mph really really soon,,,lololol.

So that being said, Im going to get really really comffy with it. And I cant wait for that.

I have my bike in the paper this month. So we are going to give it 2 weeks and see how it shakes out. there is about $900 on the table from outright sale to trade in. Im asking $4900 for the fz6.

But really more than likely I will just call the guy next week and have him trailer it down and pick up my bike.

Its like I had an affair with another bike,, and I totally cant wait to feel her again!!!!!!!!

altho,,,,,,,, I think Im going to be a little sad seeing my fz6 go.... Until a beautiful zx14 gets a new spot in the garage!

See you guys,, I will be around.

Happy 4th,, be safe.

BTW women love the Plasma blue, they go crazy for mine and rave about the color.

A guy at work yesterday says to me, "That's not a motorcycle that is a popsicle... if you want a real motorcycle you need a Harley!" I literally laughed at him and then drove away with a grin, no response necessary.

Before I bought my Nomad and then this 14 another guy at work tried to tell me I had to get a HD. I said I'm not a mechanic, I just want to ride and he says they aren't like that anymore... in the last month I have seen his bike at work twice.

The first time his HD decided to take a giant piss all over the parking lot right in front of the main entrance where we park the bikes... completely drained out his oil, which he then tried to clean up with kitty litter and the like with little luck. I'm sure the VP's love to see that every time they walk in/out of our brand new 400,000 sq/foot facility.

The second time I came out and he wasn't able to get his bike started... one lady walking with me says to him as we walk by "Put a nickle in it!" and I just laughed as I started up my rice burner and drove away.

IKeyes, nice story! :D

Silvrevo - I felt the same way... wasn't even considering buying a new bike this year... then test-drove 14... holy cow. A week later, I was so anxious to see it again, I just snapped and bought one. Bad economy? Who cares. Old bike still not sold? Who cares. I am in love, screw everything else. I only live once. :)

New Bike,, New Tires

1 Yr warrenty

Plus everytime I see it in the garage I just get a giddy tinggley feeling all over.

O ya,,, I love the TQ,, you can puts around town at 2k rpm,, then roll on and have power

Old bike,,, nothing really happens till you ring it out to 7k+rpms,,, then it got so high strung and buzzzy ,,,

I Love This Ninja,,, It will be a Keeper.

And Plus that on sparking the economy,,, Althou I just used my refyi $,,, and saved $100/month on mortage..

Went from 5.875 to 5%,,,,,,, Nice all the way around,,, almost Illegal.....hahahaha.Suckersssssssssssssss
