Technically speaking, stock ZX-14 bars are NOT clip-ons. Clip-ons clamp on to the fork tube below the top clamp whereas ZX-14 bars bolt on over the top of the top clamp. Clip-ons originated from a need to create a more aerodynamic posture so the rider did not slow the machine by acting as a wind brake. When they came into popular usage in racing, fairings were in their infancy and most racebikes had only small flyscreens. Clip-ons were virtually unheard of on streetbikes until the cafe racer boom of the late 50's and early 60's.

Clip-ons did indeed arise as a name because they sort of clipped onto fork tubes. But the ones today are also called clip-ons because they retain the functionality sought from the earliest versions.

It is easier to just use a commonplace phrase because everyone knows what you are talking about, and nobody thinks you are saying you went and got a real set of clip-ons and attached them to your fork tubes.

I remember when I got a set of clip-ons for my Z1R when I was drag racing it. It really helped me get forward and down on the tank to keep the front end down better. That and rear sets with reverse shift pattern. Something else that is used today for peg arrangements which are not true rear sets. True rear sets you lose the passenger peg and it really stretches you out on the bike. Not good for roadracing but great for drag racing.

I am a couple months from ordering the bar kit.
Was wondering what you fellas are using for bar weights and how do they work?

The lack of vibration is one of my favorite features on my 14. Would hate to spend the dough for the kit and then be unhappy.
After a lifetime of pulling nets and then a nasty wreck my shoulders get very painful the second day of a tour. Risers helped some but the spiegler kit might just solve the rest.

Privateer is the man you wanna talk to for comfort mods... but pretty sure he went with Vibranator bar ends:

Yup....get his take...since he's riding a Concours with a completely different layout than you'll be having.Make sure ya don't ask anyone who's actually HAD the kit on their 14 .

I guess this is one of those times where...I get to stick my foot in my mouth...again....forget my sarcasm here....Privateer WOULD be the one to know...I forgot he DID have a 14 with the Riser kit on there...my bad....I'll shut up now.

Privateer has pain from past injuries and abuse that sound similar to your's, skiffman... The guy did everything under the sun to make his zx14 more comfortable before deciding to trade it in on a Connie. He actually double stacked LSL risers and installed taller bars, IIRC.

Yea, I followed much of Privateers (and others) attempts to sport tour the 14. Have also test rode a number of other bikes.
Even if I do get another bike, I will still go with the spiegler kit. Will do a search when the time comes...,(August)

Another old guy here (60). Just wondering if I will still be able to use my stem mount for my radar detector with the LSL Speigler Handle Bar kit?

I don't think so because the tube bar crosses right over the top of the pivot. Techmount makes mounts that clamp directly to a tube bar, though.

Auron dang is that a personal pic?! I took the test on my 97 zx9 and it was heavy on the steering, but I passed with high effort on the bars, see the difference with clip ons and bars just wish I could transition in the middle of a ride for the best of both worlds.

I am sure they are more comfy...but IMHO they look out of place and do not belong on any sport bike...
that said.. if it helps you ride and enjoy the bike more ,then good for you and who cares what others think !!!!!!!!!!

Hi. New guy here but not new to riding. I am ready to pull the trigger on the Speigler Kit but have a few questions. Any advice in installing would be a big help. What to watch out for or special tools that are needed.
Thanks in advance!

Bopropucope, the install is pretty easy with 2 exceptions:
1, you need to drill out the locking mechanism
2, I couldn't figure out how to pull the steering stem (or something in that area) without busting this plastic cap off (you'll see what I mean). I don't know if there's a way of doing it without breaking that part but I couldn't figure it out.

Also, when you remove parts that have a stack of washers/spacers, make a note of the order, number and position of them. It will effect the steering lock on your locking cylinder.
