Brocks clutch spacers
04/24/10 9:30 AM

Installed Brocks spacers today and don't see how they stay centered. The hole in the center of the spacer is huge and looks like they will move side to side and not keep the spring seated. Why isn't the hole in the center the size of the bolt to keep it centered? What am I missing?

Thanks

I went with Brocks Heavy Duty Springs for that very reason. Love them.

Figured I would wait for the product users. Here's what I see in the photo at Brocks':

Might not the washers fit closer to the wall so the spring can float where it wants? I doubt that spring is going to go through the hole of the washer. Not to worry.

There are a set of thick cheater washers that are used with stock springs. You read the text for one way to cheat the spring. I'll show you spring setup and clutch release action-happen-effect. OK, this a thick washer that is going to take up the coil bind on the quick.

You already have the pressure plate moved out so far, but the return is quicker, along with a stronger bite to the pack. Remember, these are thick washers you could weld two nickels together to make one washer. Say you look at it for argument sake, that the height is lost on the throw. You have a [shorter] feeding problem as you solve one, another one is created.
_______________________________________________________________________________

There are the thinner washers to play with. These now can replace the thicker washers. The heavy duty spring that you tired to mimic with the coin size thickness, where now, you can more balance a feel on the pressure set with the thinner washers. This brings back the full throw, the bite you want, the trouble created is gone. This is the better setup I would think is a happier hand.

Back to the shorter throw stock springs, thick washers/thin washers:

Now, I have a possibility to bring the feel back to having a slightly longer lever throw. Probably not as well as full travel, locking up the pack better. But if we are thinking street race/go to work bike, you can double package the washers and combo like so, you forgo the HD-springs.

I'm just saying the design makes no sense, they would be much better of they were like a fender washer and the hole in the center was just big enough for the bolt to go through. The hole is huge for no reason, and the washer could in theory slide sideways enough to cause a lot of trouble both with interfering with the side wall as well as cocking the spring at a bind. There is nothing to keep the spacer centered, and nothing to keep the spring centered on the spacer.

Your clutch pressure plate as the spring guides or those walls for the springs to buckle. They must have marks on those in general by design. How can that spring move with the screw carrier that holds the pressure plate in place. The spring cannot move so much on the O/D as it too is limited at the I/D.

Big Holes = Less weight as it thickens. That's just a guess. Ask the Brockman why the design? Besides, we are back to the only being concerned about design.

http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=905989&category=Motorcycles&make=KAWASAKI&year=2008&fveh=24900 << Numbers Reference:
X = 13187 ~ Cannot move in side direction too far in the O/D.
Y = 92153 ~ Cannot move off the spring if the large washer can sit on either end of the 131 or 921's OEM washer on the bolt.
Z = 13087 ~ Cannot pop past the spring if the washer holds the spring. Though you cannot see the other side, these are the towers for the screw [length] threads that run through the holes of 13187 and there is your internal leg [not shown] where the spring bangs off that leg in the I/D.

3 dimensions says washers are going no place, nor will the spring act anything but normal coil bind. Can you see it [the design] now?

Alright, I took it back apart to look at it and make sure all the bolts were seated. The spacers on top of the springs fit over the towers that the bolts thread into when you tighten it all down. They can't go anywhere. You do have to watch that when you tighten the bolts down that the spacer stays perfectly centered or it will sandwich between the bolt washer and the tower not allowing it to seat though. Other than that, it only took about 15 minutes to get it apart, make sure it all looked right, and button it back up.

I really like the clutch feel now, hopefully this mod will get me from 10.10 to 9.9999999...............I'm about 240 suited so I need a little more holding power getting my fat ass moving and getting through the traps.
