Muzzy Lowering -Link
03/22/09 9:41 PM

Whats the best way to install a lowering link ? I`ve got a rear stand , a floor jack and the ZX14 has swing-arm spools . I plan to go with the 1.5 setting , mainly to take a little weight off thr front end , and close-up the gap between the tire & the fender in the rear . This isn`t a drag race bike and it doesn`t haul passengers . With the rear peg mounts gone & a new single side exhaust , the bike just won`t look balanced . The front-ends are a little soft for larger riders anyway . I`ve already adjusted the susp. per settings gotten from a previous post here . The guy at Muzzy said lowering links were only for drag bikes . I don`t completely agree but I understood his point about steering balance . What does the membership think ? Thanks for any help . i bought my bike with it lowered with the muzzy links. it was on the middle setting which you really can't tell just by looking that the bike is lowered. it will help turn in but it takes away from ground clearance. i got tired of scraping and dragging (literally) on the pavement so i took it back up to stock height. no clearance issues now.

as far as raising the rear, i just put the bike on front and rear stands. then, took 2 car jacks and barely jacked the bike off the rear stand. i jacked under the frame. you've got a flat spot under the frame right in front of the rider pegs by the kickstand. once the weight is off the swingarm you are free to loosen the bolt and adjust accordingly. you'll enjoy the change but you'll hate your next oil change! the drain plug took a beating. i really need to replace that thing

Thanks for the input about lowering . If yours was in the middle setting , that is the 1.5 inch lower hole . These bikes sit a little low anyway but I wouldn`t think you would be dragging on stuff all the time . I`m a farly cautious rider I think so I`ll try it in the middle setting first and change it back if it seems to be a problem . - - - I was doing a little prefitting on the M10 system tonight , but thats for the other post . Thanks again !

the reason i was scraping so often was because i weigh 240 butt naked! the rear shock was adjusted too soft for comfy cruising. way too soft for my wife to ride as well. she weighs 130 btw. that's when i bottomed most.

i sat on my brother's stretched and lowered 08 busa last night. he had about 1.5" of clearance from wheel to the rear fender. then, when i sat on it, it had less than an inch of clearance

I just purchased a pair of Muzzy Gold Links used and I have not installed them yet.
If you use the middle hole and lower it, don't you need to lower the front so it sets level??

you don't have to lower the front but it's recommmended. you want to lower the front to keep the same geometry that the stock height had for better steering. it would also give you less drag at the strip too i believe. clearance is probably going to be an issue if you weigh over 200lbs. get ready to scrape pegs, drain plug, and mid pipes. lowering is for the strip and for short people. if you don't fall within those two categories i wouldn't recommend lowering your bike.

Thanks, I will only use the strap, links and the extentions when I am going to meet Wee and some others here
in Fort Worth when we go to the Drags. I am tall and 220 lbs. 99% of my riding is on the street.

I am looking for a Flush head bolt (allen drive) and grind off the fins/guard for the hex head drain plug.
I going to install the Gold Muzzy links at stock hole just cause they look cool. The left side shows the gold chain now that I have a M14. Just a little Bling until a week end haveing Wee spank me until I get some seat time. I will
install the Spencer extensions I got used from Shane just for the week ends so I can remove and go back stock.
I will only extend and lower 2 or 3 times a year. I have a large Family, my kids are now haveing kids ahhh.

The M14 was Shanes too. I Love it, the polished stainless oval muffler looks just like
my pair of Muzzy slip on's that were on my 07 when I got a few months ago. But the M14
muffler has a larger core Dia. in the center so I am selling my slip on's.( was going to keep them for a extra muffler)
email me at labartay@charter.net and I will send you pictures of my Black 07 with the M14

I got around to installing the MUZZY Lowering-Link over the past weekend . After a friend helped get the bike up on the rear stand , I finished the job by myself with no problems . I used a small sissors jack under the motor to allow removal of the stock link . NOTE : I was able to keep the bike balanced with one hand while I changed things over . It would have been a lot safer to have a friend there to keep the bike from tipping . I used the middle setting , 1 and a half inch lower than stock . If that seems too low and I drag anything , I`ll just change the setting for street riding and then drop it down if I do any track stuff . It looks pretty trick though . Underdog427

underdog, i use both car jacks from our vehicles. one from the car and the other from the truck. put the bike on front and rear stands for support. then put the jacks under each side of the frame. there's a flat spot in front of each rider foot peg. it's a great place for the jack to go under. jack both sides slowly and raise the bike off the rear stands. so far this has worked great for me. just make sure you keep the bike stands under the bike at all times, and make sure you jack slowly on both sides to make sure the bike doesn't tilt to one side!

not yet.

hey underdog, do you have any clearance issues with that m10 and the bike being lowered? what about the pipes clearance before you lowered the bike?

Reeves - Your jack idea would work in a larger area where there was a lot of room around the bike , but mine is in the livingroom of my house ( on carpet ). (I live with my female unit) . It`s been inside all winter parked close to my ZRX1200R and I haven`t gotten the bike out yet this season . I got it off the rear stand tonight and it doesn`t seem to be much lower than it was , although I`m sure it is . I hope to take it for a spin next week if the weather gets better . I still have to get the bodywork back on & the radiator in . It was 62 today so I took a little run on the ZRX . I`ve got a question about the new Power Commander I just installed . that will be posted under that heading though . Thanks for your input . Underdog427

yeah, i love my garage. i would love it even more if my wife would get her yard sale crap out of there :( my brother's apartment is the same way. he has to move furniture to work on his bikes. he's got a stretched, lowered 08 busa and a 07 cbr 1k in his one bedroom apartment right now. he's had a few bikes over here in the past because he didn't have enough room in his apartment for 3 bikes!

Reeves - I guess I made it sound like I don`t have any work space . I`ve got a 3 car garage , 32 X 28 ft. , but it is mostly full with , well , 3 cars plus several engines & multiple tool boxes. I bring the bikes in for the winter so they are nice and warm , plus it`s a lot easier to work on things in January when you can wear a T-shirt . With that Stratoliner I recently bought though , I`m afraid it will have to Winter in the shop unless I put a new sliding glass door entering the kitchen from outside . I might have to invest in a couple of electric blankets , Ha Ha !! - - - I got a few hits on my question about setting the throttle position on the 14 . It sounds like I should hook a lap-top up to the bike to really be sure what I`ve got . HUB , I`m sure is a smart guy , but sometimes I wish he would just make his point in ENGLISH . It` would be a lot easier for ol` dumb ass wrench turners such as me to get the full benefit of his knowledge . It rained most of the day , here in Ohio . We worked till noon so I didn`t get much done except a trip to H&R Block which set me back $182.00 . That whole tax thing has me still pissed . Anyway , have a Happy Easter - - Underdog

Reeves - I`ve always intended to finish getting the shop insulated and putting in a woodburner , but it hasn`t happened yet . It looks like I`m going to have to buy a lap-top now . I`ve wanted one for a long time , now I`ve got a reason .

I found a Great deal on a HP lap top on Amazon, it was a new return with full warranty and paid 40% less than what was at a retail store. Had it several months now, works Great and do get the lap holder that has the fans, the lap top lays on it and the fans keep it Much cooler.
