Pins & Needles
01/13/13 12:57 AM

Hi Everyone,
Im hoping someone may have overcome this themselves before & may be able to give me some advice.
I am getting bad pins & needles in my fingers on both hands when riding.
It starts after about 15 minutes & slowly gets worse to the extent that after about 45 minutes I have to pull up.
It is also stopping me from going on longer rides because it is so uncomfortable.
I am only short 1.6m tall, I have tried 1 inch bar risers which made only the very slightest difference but I prefer the feel of the bike without them so I took them back off.

Any advice appreciated.

Dave

Relax your grip usualy works, if that doesnt work try some soft foam grips. I might even have a set here if your interested, They are left over from my last bike, that had some vibration around 4000 - 4500 RPM wich just happened to be right in the 100 -120 Km/hr range. Anyhow Pm me if interested.

Good morning Dave. I am 6'6" and I used to have the same problem, I wasn't riding correct. There should be little to no weight on your wrists or the handle bars when you ride. Use your legs and torso to support your body when you ride. It will make all the difference when you start doing that.

Get the book or DVD twist of the wrist II by Keith Code. One of the better investments I've made.

I have the same problem, someone on this board told me to try Qwi nerve protection gloves, and they helped, but you still have to keep in mind your riding positon, weight on your wrists, etc ... but I noticed a big diference right away, don't know if it will work for you, I got mine on their website, QwiNerveProtector.com I think they are on ebay too.

Good luck, I know its a pain in the a$$, with such a nice bike to ride having your hands go numb, last time I had to pull over 2 or three times in a 1 hour span, dont know what I was doing wrong ....

I used to have my left hand go numb in a matter of about 20 minutes when riding. Turns out I had a muscle knot in my left back shoulder putting pressure on a nerve. It took about 10 visits with a masseuse and it went away.

Do you have stock bar end weights on there Martin? It does sound like weight being pushed on the wrong spot on yer wrist.Lighten yer grip as was mentioned...and grip with your thighs, get that weight off the bars(your upper torso). This works for some anyway. You can also get vibrations if those bar ends aren't heavy enough...may look into getting a beefier set?Sounds silly I know...but amazing how much tech stuff went into these bikes.

Heavier barends, foam grips, and gel gloves. The main thing is your shoulders. Try different positions by rounding, relaxing your shoulders, straightening, bending your elbows. Sliding forward, backward in the seat. I found out my bars are too narrow, and sharply angled, causing my arms to twist and angle in, and putting a strain on my shoulders. I slide my hands out on the grips to the edge, only 2 fingers on the grip, and instant relief. You need to experiment with arm positions to find the right position for you. The "grip with your thighs" may work for most, but strained my back too much.

I have mentioned this ever since I got mine. Same time frame, 15-20 minutes. What is strange is if I break the habit of riding with my fingers covering the brake and clutch lever there is no issue at all. On mine, the grips are fine, the buzz is coming through the levers.

I used to have pain in my palms, but was putting too much pressure on my palms.
Once I started holding my torso weight up with my abs and core
, it took the pressure off of my hands. You'd think having to support
your upper body with your abs would wear you out real quick,
but it don't. You get used to it real fast and the pressure is off
your hands and wrists. I workout 3-4 days a week and that probably helps, though.
Just my 2 cents. Good luck and hang in there.

Engines vibrate, period. Every single IL4 I've ever owned has resonated through the bars at some point in the rev range. making sure the throttle bodies are balanced helps, as do gel palmed gloves but you'll never cure it 100%. It's the nature of the beast. The 1198 I ran for a while resonated just about everywhere but, being a twin, it was more of a throb than a buzz so never really caused the same discomfort.

You could always see the doc..and have em do a carpal tunnel syndrome operation...it's quick and actually works! Also quite safe...even if you don't have carpal tunnel;)...maybe give ya two for one special...who knows!

My right hand...on the 14R...it would sometimes begin to display those symptoms.Heli risers fixed that for me...but interestingly...the LEFT hand never did it.....I broke it years ago and they went and did that operation on me so later on I wouldn't develop carpal tunnel.Coincidence?IDK

Hey pally, be careful with that. I have "pins and needles" in just my 4th and fifth digits. I get the sensation after using my computer, riding and stuff like that for a while. It ended up being cubital tunnel syndrome (ulnar nerve slipped out of place). Anyways there are exercises you can do if thats the prob so you dont need surgery. If it persists though, Id speak to your doc. Good luck!

I have got a fair bit of relief now from this problem.
I took some of your susgestions as in riding, shoulders & arm positioning, also changed to gel grips.
Tried "grip Puppies" over them but they were to firm & made the grips to thick, so I came up with this idea.
I went to the local sports shop & purchased a Reebok cricket bat grip made from good quallity rubber which was supposed to reduce vibration on a cricket bat, they are long enough to cut in half & do the 2 sides, they are nice and thin & have very good grip.
They were a nice snug fit but I applied a little grip glue to make sure they stayed put.
They have made a big difference & would recomend to anyone with pins & needles problem.

Martin..
Is Your bike the special edition?
Looks like the covers between the tank and fairing are painted, and not the usual unpaintedlastic bits
Not unless I'm not seeing that on the picture correctly
If so I think I will order a set if available on the US
