My first oil change
04/08/13 4:04 PM

Guy I have never done an oil change in a bike, I know it might be easy but do you know if someone in this forum has a video or pictures of an oil change for a zx14r? I don't have the manual and I was wondering how many quarts of oil the bike takes and if there is any particular oil filter that you recommend.
Planning to do the oil change every 2000 miles and I do not want to pay the dealer for that.
Thanks

Should take about 4.2 Qts of oil, the change is easy, you dont have to take off any plastics, the oil filter may be a little hard, I will try to attach a picture of the wrench I used to take it off.

Torque the drain plug to 22 Ft. lbs. (or a little less) and if you want the torque specs for the oil filter, it is 13 ft. lbs. (I dont know anyone that does that though)

One of the best oil filters is a purolator pure one, PL14612, or if you want a little longer one a PL14610, the colors is weird but they are good filters, $6 at pep boys Bosch 3300 is good too, I'm using the kawasaki filter because the bikes under warranty, and I happened to have some, but I got purolators ready to go when the kawis are gone, got a two for one coupon at pep boys !

If you want the kawi filter, I go to partzilla, they are $8.20 and $1.75 shipping for one, if you spend over $10 the shipping goes up to $6.95, weird ! here is link Click here !

Here is the wrench :

Page 124 of your owner's manual if you had one:

4.0 qts. = No filter change.
0.4 qts. = Pop open another can, you need to sit the bike upright and look at, or add 0.4 quarts and now you know where you should be after the new filter receives that portion after you start it up, shut it down for a second or two.

You may not go to the dealer for service, but you sure better buy their filter so there is no question about warranty that engine takes a poop. Besides, you will be buying OEM so we can buy another large one down the road again we support the product. Oil wise, you think I care what I put in that bike? It's called cleaner than before like you are doing. Change the oil when the trans feels like it felt when the oil change was new. You'll feel the shift change. That works out to a few more hundred miles, unless you have the coin to 2k the bike/filter, then go for it.

06-2011 OIL CHANGE CLICK This might help.....IDK if all the torque specs and oil capacity is the same for the 14r as the old 14 but you will get the idea. Very easy. Just take your time. Don't tighten the oil filter down hard. Tur til it touches the mount then 1/4 turn more. Check for leaks---if no leak leave it. You will have a hard time getting it off next time if you go 1/2 turn past contact. I never tighten my filter down much. Forget the torque spec on that.

I have never had any machine, lawnmowers included, that is easier to change the oil on than this bike. Everything is well hidden and at the same time easily accessible. If you exclude the time I allow it to drain, the whole process takes about 5 minutes. I don't know if you absolutely have to, but I would suggest for the couple of cents, replacing that aluminum crush gasket every time.

...been using the same one for at least the last 5-6 oil changes...lol I always forget to ask for one when I pick up a filter. If you don't overtighten the drainplu, it should be reusable. the hole squashes a little smaller every time so it is possible that it will copress onto the threads. I had to cut one off with a chisle once.

I have the filter and the washer information, I will buy everything i need this weekend, the only thing I have to figure out is how to keep the bike in a vertical position, I think I might have to buy one of those bike stands to achieve that...there is any in particular that will fit out bike better or this stand are universal? Sorry I never owned one neither seen it in person.
The last question, when you add oil to the filter, is that amount of oil part of the 4.2 qts or I add the oil to the filter and on top of that I fill 4.2 qts to the motor?
Just to be sure when,4.2 will 4 qts + 1/4 or 1/3?

Rook, I like your pictures :)

thanks.

the only thing I have to figure out is how to keep the bike in a vertical position,

It is not necessary or desireable to have the bike on a rear stand to change oil. That only ads a few inches drop to the oil drain which makes for more splash. The bike will drain 99% of the oil resting on its side stand. You DO DEF want to hold the bike vertical to check the oil level however.

must go to work now. Have a couple more tips on stands and Oil change for you in a couple hours...

Just for the record, it's 4.4 quarts of oil with an oil change.
You can do it all with the bike on the side stand, just wedge something in front of the front tire to make sure you don't knock her over while you're wrenching.
I've been doing my own oil/filter changes for close to 40 years now and have never added oil to the filter prior to installation. Some guys do, some don't. The most important thing about the entire process is to NOT over tighten the oil drain plug OR filter.
Note: I use one of those strap oil filter tools, works great!
If you're ever up north, give me a shout. Two of us in Carson City have '12 ZX14Rs and usually try to ride every weekend.

.there is any in particular (rear stand) that will fit out bike better or this stand are universal?

I did the research years ago and the overwhelming response is Pit Bull. Forward handle works good for the 14 and I am sure the 14r also. You can get a rear handle...they make a nice rear handle with removable handle....but being that you have not used rear stands before.....the 14 is a very LARGE bike to lift with that....tip over risk!! You can follow procedures to use it more safely if the rear handle is your preference but a forward handle is a lot safer for solo lifts. Pit Bull.

A bit more expensive but this is the safest stand to solo lift ANY BIKE and also requires the least amount of brute force. Stands are a whole nother topic and you really don't need one tp change oil so I'll leave the stand discussion at that. feel fre to ask more on it if you want.

just wedge something in front of the front tire to make sure you don't knock her over while you're wrenching.

That was my other comment. If you are not used to wrenching on the bike, you may be surprised at how easily it can be toppled it with a 10" long wrench levering against the weight of the bike. The rear axle seems to be the most vulnerable place to tip the bike with a wrench but anywhere you run into a very tight bolt or nut, whether it be wrenching vertical or lateral, up, down, left right forward backward....you can roll your baby over on the floor like a big canoe. It's quite pathetic. I highly discourage. So, be very careful at first. Don't overtorque and if you find someone else did overtorque before you, think about which position of the wrench handle will exert the least amount leverage that might tip the bike. ..then rocede with caution...maybe get someone else oput to the garage to hold the bike by the grips just in case. A rear stand will NOT prevent tip overs. I levered mine up an ich off of one side of the rear stand before dropping it back in. No tip over, thank GOD,

Just for the record, it's 4.4 quarts of oil with an oil change.

Don't know if that is exact for the 14r but yes, my '08 takes about 4 1/3 bottles (a bottle is 1 liter) TOTAL capacity, engine and filter. The 14r must be similar. There are dif specs published according to whether the filter was changed, or not. or if the engine was brand new and totally dry of all oil.

Found this page and says (4.9 quarts) 4.6 liters.

Someone with a owners manual will post the proper capacity published within. If not, it is really not a huge deal to run the engine a little low on oil as long as you have close to the right oil level. Start with 4 and a quarter liters and just install the filter dry. Run bike. Let sit a couple hours. Check oil level with the bike balanced at vertical on a level floor (If necessary, you sit on bike and ask a friend/wife/whoever to mark on the sightglass with a marker or tape). Checking oil level on these bikes seems to be somewhat of an art in itself. If the level is low, add just a few ounces and wait at least an hour ....check level again. A bit low is not too bad as long as the level is between the marks. HIgh oil level above the top line is worse.

when you add oil to the filter, is that amount of oil part of the 4.2 qts or I add the oil to the filter and on top of that I fill 4.2 qts to the motor?

It is not crucial to prefill the filter. You can only prefill it half way anyway --or else you will spill excess out on the floor. All the prefill achieves is that the engine gets oil sooner. I doubt it makes a huge dif. The engine will have a film of oil from the last time anyway. Every time you start the engine it runs without 100% oil circulation for a few seconds. These are tough motors. Extra 3-4 seconds to fill the filter by the oil pump wont hurt until you figure out exactly how much oil your bike takes.
From what I am reading elsewhere on the net, the new 14Rs are having their oil filters WAYYY overtightened from the factory. That was also the case with my '08. Be careful. cartridge may crush but it should come off without too much fuss. Might want to use a filter wrench and a strap type wrench at the same time. Let it be a lesson to NOT overtighten yourself.

The most important thing about the entire process is to NOT over tighten the oil drain plug OR filter.

+1 and also check to make sure the rubber ring gasket came off with the old filter. The old gasket can stick to the mount if the filter was on there too tight. I have never heard of anyone having this happen on a 14 but it's good idea to check.

With filter change...I always go one gallon...then top off with about a 1/3rd quart...start bike...let circulate a moment...shut bike off...recheck in a few minutes...vertical...both wheels on the ground.Restart...check for leaks...clean area around plug well...and go RIDE!!!;)First 'rest stop'..recheck area for seeps. You 'may' get a teensy bit of oil seeping around the filter after warming up...no problem...wipe clean..and recheck after riding some more(residual oil from changing).

^^ I always suggest waiting a long time between oil level checks cuz it really takes that long for all the oil to run down from the top engine. Also, hot oil fills a significantly larger volume than cold. expansion/contraction. most important thing is to read the level the same every time because as you can see there are a number of variables even when the proper amount of oil is in the engine. I go cold in the same spot on the floor in the garage every time. Press muffler against the calf, hand on seat top, balance, grasshoppa... bend down and peak. See, that is the art of oil level checking.

A rear stand will not solve the oil site glass reading problem either. They hold the bike up but no telling if it is a few degrees off vertical and a few degrees makes a huge dif in the oil level.

It will read VERY different on a rear stand...yes...best to pour in the recommended amount...no matter how the bike's sitting.

yep. also seems to me that it takes an extraordinarily long time for a small amount of oil added through the filler hole to flow over the clutch plates and run down to where it all will contribute to the oil level we see in the sight glass. Can't add and then read a minute later. Gotta wait an hour to be sure.

BTW Grn, for alex up der....what does yur 2013 ZX-14r OM say about oil capacity with filter change?

It says...."4 qts when filter is NOT removed"....."4.4 qts when filter IS removed"..."LEVEL...Between upper and lower level lines...wait two to three minutes after idling or running".

CCzx14 above already posted this...sorry.

Hey guys thank you for all the answers, today I took a look at the bike oil filter and the drain plug and I was amazed by the easy access that they have, there is nothing on their way like other bike I owned in before. I also understood that I do not need to keep the bike straight to drain the oil, I only need to keep it straight to check the oil level. The only thing I still not sure is the amount of oil some people say 4 and 1/3 and another say 4.4 what I get confused is with the .4 is this equal to a 1/4?
Thanks again!

Say 0.5 qt. is half a quart. 1/2 of a half a quart is 2.5 qt to make 1/4 quart. So, 4 quarts plus almost half a quart, but started up with 4 quarts, both tires on the ground, bike straight upright = Pour until in between the big marks. If you poured in less than half a can... Don't go anal if it's a half a quart. Let it ride.

If you want to be anal about it, bike is sitting overnight. If any oil is coming down from the top and is still moving down, it's pretty much all down is that static level. Now, pour less than a 1/2 a quart in, but do not exceed the top notches showing it's topped off, this is the limit. If over, then drain. But if a touch under half a quart goes in, is under the upper hash marks?... Leave it.

What's ever left in the 5th quart, mark the level on the can. If you did the correct measuring, this is where .4 should be and over half, if it looks like a touch over half is still left in the can.

And remember, this is started so the new oil filter is pressure with all the oil it can be filled with. The vid showed partial fill, so you have to remember to load the new filter before you check any kind of level. And that is 2.5 parts of half a quart being .5 so as to say 0.2.5000 quarts.
