exhaust gasket questions
10/24/11 3:30 PM

quick questions for the mechanical geniuses of the board. i bought a 2006 with stock pipes that are painted black. paints starting to peel so i was able to get some 2011 stock pipes cheap on ebay. they fit , but the exhaust gasket is thinner then the one on the 2006 pipes. i assume i need to order some 2006 gaskets and replace them. question: any secret to getting the old one out and putting the new one in ? is there any other solution? thanks in advance! Dave

No Dave, the gaskets are about a 2 shot deal. In other words, off goes the stockers, on goes the aftermarket and if you took it off again, maybe it may start finding a leak. And you don't want to tighten down a pre-crush where there were 2 crushes before that.

Buy new gaskets. To get the old out, make an "L" out of an old screwdriver tip. Get that behind the gasket and the port hole. Once you can pull it or collapse it, wrinkle it out of there, it's not rocket science, but more a PITA. When you see the new gaskets and the fold is over to make the ring? Put that folded over side on the port end side. smooth side faces the exhaust header.

If the new gasket don't stay in place, put a little bit of grease on the back sides of them. Then they will stick to the heads.

Yo Mad...I think he's talkin about the PIPE gasket?I've had mine 'reused' for several piping switches...several.Haven't had any exhaust leaks at the midpipe. They can be unusably damaged though if you don't take care getting them out and go slow.Mine...well...they show some wear from removing and such, but the sealing surfaces are just fine.

I'm not an OEM exhaust guy but all black, I like that look especially on a black bike.
