rear axle nut

Mine was on the sprocket side when I got the bike. Correct or should it be on the brake rotor side? If so, why?

Every illustration in my 08 factory manual shows the rear axle being installed from left to right and the front axle in the opposite direction. I couldn't find any explanation why it is done that way but at least the rear axel I think is easier to complete instillation with the rear braking system if one starts from the left. Wheel rotation and the braking and acceleration forces may dictate why they are torqued in those directions.

I looked a a few pics and mine is the only one I've seen with the nut on the left. It was like that when I bought it and when I put on a new rear tire, I put it back the same way. Doesn't seem to make a difference.

It can go either way. I have mine on the right. That should help to keep the axle from getting pulled out of line and the chain out of adjustment when torquing the nut.
