Chain Lube
10/14/13 4:54 PM

Went to go out for a ride one day and realised that I had run out of chain lube. So I decided to run to the auto parts store real quick to grab some before my ride since it was a sunday and the local "cycle shack" was closed and I couldn't get my usual chain wax brand. I chose to go with the lucas oil brand since they have a pretty good name IMO and since it said "no sling". Anyway.......not to try and knock the brand but I will never use that stuff again! i didn't use that much and that stuff slung everywhere!! It even ran onto the outsides of my tires. Good thing I noticed before i went around any decent turns. It mixed with the brake dust and turned my rear rim into sludge. I still find funk in the crevices of my bike when i wash it. what types do yall use?

When the bike was new, it had this white type lith base. Real tacky, thick to the touch and all that. I was tired of spray lube being it tacked up so well, it was hard to clean the bike. So I thought that this roller material was in a pressure induced state, so why no use wheel bearing grease?

So I began to use marine grade bearing grease for rain and all that. With spray, there is no pressure around the rollers. It just drops where it lands and that is all she wrote. But with grease, I could squeeze more into more areas than it simply dropping on. That was my theory.

And when it comes to cleaning up, I use a dry, nothing sprayed on to dislodge the product, just wipe off it's cleaned. Plus, the chain held up pretty well.

Maxima Chain Wax. That stuff has been the bomb on my bikes, all with polished wheels. The stuff just does not come off, and the chain lasts and lasts. My 07 chain and sprockets had 26000 kms on it and was still like new.

Bel-Ray SuperClean-jtemple

This. Very little sling-off until I clean off the build-up with Liquid Wrench Chain Lube or Bel-Ray regular chain lube, and then it messes the back wheel, which I then degrease and wash off.

Nother vote for Chain Wax. I do make sure not don't get it on the rims when spraying on.

The only thing that put me off about Chain Wax was that a p.o. of my last bike used it, and when I took the sprocket cover off to change the front cog, the buildup inside the cover had attracted rocks, sticks and other road debris. My concern would be that it's tacky nature would do the same on the chain itself.

I think I have posted on thius thread already but as the weather has changed and I quit using soft slippery axle grease and started using Ultima wax, I am noticing 2 things. #1 the waxed chain does not attract much grit which is evident during cleaning with kerosene. #2 the wax does not fling hardly at all if it is applied in one quick coat spinning the wheel by hand while spraying with the other.

Wax definitely does take a while to heat up and become liquid so I would keep using grease in the lower temps. However, the buildup of rocks and dirt in the fling that comes off the chain from grease is more than what gets deposited by wax. I don't think it matters much what sticks in the areas around the chain's path as long as the chain seems relatively free of grit.

I use the whole Maxima system. Cleaner (bubbly and melts the grime off), then penetrating oil (gets into the the working mechanisms very well it seems), and finally, seal it all up with the chain wax itself.

This is the best treatment that I have found. Repeat every 500-600 miles or after especially dirty riding on unimproved road surfaces.

I'm a big fan of motul products. Their chain lube is excellent. No fling. Doesn't attract much debris. In my experience anyways.

I saw a video posted on another forum about lubing the chain with the wax. The poster sprayed a length of the lower run and then rubbed it vigorously with a rag before rotating the wheel to another run. That would prevent the buildup inside the cover like I saw it. Does anyone here using Chain Wax do it this way?

With the chain warm, I just spray it onto the inner run between the wheel and the countershaft while spinning it a few turns and I'm done. BUT- I haven't peeked behind the countershaft area yet so......

Mine was lubed with chain wax only for about 20,000 miles. The buildup under the sprocket cover was not bad at all. A lot of the gunk melts down to the side stand pivot and can be cleaned off there. I'd still take the sprocket cover off every two years or so to look at sprocket ware but prolly not much to worry about as far as cleaning lube.

See steps 1-8 and 53-60.

step 13 for pics of gunk befoer and after the cleanup. This is not anything close to serious enough to remove the countershaft sprocket but if you are going to clean all of it, that would be what you'd have to do.

We need to talk to an engineer or technician at the chain manufacturer. Once you've determined "this is what the chain needs to live" then you can shop for the product that doesn't fling.

Maxima Chain Wax is the best I've found. "Gold" can (at least it was when I last bought some).
Maxima sells, or once sold, some synthetic stuff in a silver can and was the WORST stuff you could imagine. Flew off everywhere, especially onto the rotor. I made the mistake of thinking since it was synthetic and from the same company, it could be even better.

Another one for Maxima chain wax. I've used it for years and the stuff is liquid gold.

Do you wax guys wipe the chain with a clean cloth after spraying? That's what I saw the dude do in the chain wax how-to on Youtube.

I don't see the reason behind wiping the chain off after applying a wax.
You spray it on a still warm chain. After I stop spraying I slowly rotate the chain a few more turns to be sure it sets up without any dripping/wasting any. When cleaning off overspray I try my best to avoid touching the chain at all.
Deliberately wiping it down would just remove some of the wax that you wanted on there.
