I like the BelRay stuff that turns white. After two or three applications it builds up. I then clean the chain with WD-40. Go for a ride to heat the chain up, Then re-apply Bel Ray The stuff never flies off as long as you wait 10 minutes after application!

WD40 is bad for the O-rings. Will make them brittle. Use kerosene to clean any o-ring chain.

Whatever you use, spray it on AFTER a ride while the chain is hot- you get better penetration as well as less sling-off when you ride.

Kak I have used WD40 on my chains for years and even after 20,000+ miles they are still fine. I guess its personal preference.

used WD40 on my last two chains for claening only. Both exhibited rapid oring wear. Looks like tiny black rubber tapes protruding from between the inneer / outer plates in the links. Latest chain, no WD. No tiny rubber tapes. i still rode my bike with the damaged orings. Never had a problem except the black rubber flakes stuck to the swingarm. maybe it was overtightenning the chain? IDK, i just heard so mant times to stay away from WD40 on rubber stuff, i just figured it's better to go with kero which is recommended by manufacturers and most definitely less expensive than WD if you can find a fillinf station that sells diesel they often sell kerosene too. about $3/gallon.

Yep just put new chains on the 14 and the Busa and same as Rook, last time I use WD40 as chains are expensive, either Kero or motul chain cleaner for me.

Just passing on the truth. WD40 is bad stuff for cleaning o-ring chains. It shortens the O-rings life.

The poster sprayed a length of the lower run and then rubbed it vigorously with a rag before rotating the wheel to another run. That would prevent the buildup inside the cover like I saw it. Does anyone here using Chain Wax do it this way?

That's the way i do it.. No sling..No mess..

I normally clean the chain with kerosine...brush with a shoe polish horsehair brush...dry with a hairdryer(and rag)...apply the chain wax liberally...wipe excess off of chain with a rag(moistened with kerosine)...and that's it.Turns out really nice...lasts for several hundred miles.NO FLING EVER.It can build up at the front sprocket area in there...but it will melt and drop off when it gets 'too much' in there.Found hardened 'pieces' of it under the bike at different times...fell off overnight.

kerosene yep, I use a denture brush and a "Grunge Brush" at the same time to hit all 4 surfaces of the chain at one time. Goes pretty quick. I take it for a ride to fling the kero out and then spray it with the wax. I just shhoot on the middle of the rollers while spinning the wheel once around. That's enough. let it sit a while until the carrier solvent evaps out of the wax. all done. Flings just a little bit. I mean I still need to wash my wheels now and then but no big deal. I don't worry about what might fling off under the cover. It melts away like Grn said. No real maintenance issue. Wax lube can't hurt anything even if it does stick under there wher you can't easily reach it.
