Evap canister
08/13/16 4:35 PM

I am trying to replace the coolant and have a question. When I removed the right side fairing, there was a canister attached to the fairing with 2 hoses. I removed the hose in order to remove the fairing. Once I filled the radiator with new coolant, I ought to start the engine. Can I start the engine with those canister hoses off? Will it damage the emission system? I believe that is the evaporation canister. I am in California so all vehicles have the evaporation canister.

I dont think it will hurt but I do know that if you go wide open in fourth gear , you will get a loud pop at 10,000 rpm. Plug the cannister back in and everything is fine..It did not show an AF change on the dyno but it was definitely there, same place everytime.

Squeeze the lower hoses first. Purge bubbles hanging around higher. End squeezing the upper hoses. If bike is hard to start, there is an air leak in the engine side or that emission hose being off, plug it off to start. If the bike starts right up, it's not sucking air, but more at the little diaphragm pulling any vapor up the other hose at the throttle body.

Don't fill it to the neck. More like you first want to see it circulate and suck some down as the water pump runs. Shut it off after 30 seconds say. You get it hot, she starts backing up and out the neck. Then, a final purge down at the bottom and work your way up. No change in level, you're good to go. Fill just to the ring at the neck. The cap goes on a dry filler head opening. Too much and it pours over, stains and dries green or what color you didn't wipe off or see.

Thank you, Charley and Hub,

I was able to complete the coolant change along with the air filter. Coolant wasn't in bad shape - I just noticed I didn't need to replace it for 3 years. I guess it won't hurt to replace it in 2 years. I flushed the system with distilled water twice and filled it with Engine Ice carefully. I test-rode my ZX and it run fine. Air filter was in bad shape after merely 5K miles. San Francisco Bay Area must be full of pollution and whatever. It was dirty!!
