when to go synthetic???
11/11/10 1:16 PM

I just hit the 3000 mile mark. How many miles should I put on it before the switch to ensure a proper breakin ?

I waited until 4,000 miles, which was 2 oil changes.

Now I go a whole season without changing the oil, using Amsoil 10W40 synthetic. This includes 500+ mile days on trips, as well as bombing around the moutain roads.

I did 3,900 miles this past season.

I will be changing the oil in a few weeks so that it has fresh oil over the winter. But good synthetic oils don't break down into acids like petroleum oil does, so even that is overkill.

Doing it this way, this engine will be going strong long after I cannot ride anymore.

I took a slightly different approach. I did my first oil change at 800 miles using the regular non-synth oil. I did my second one using the same oil at 1500. I then put half synth half regular (Repsol) at 3000. I then went full synth (Repsol again) at 6000. That's just me though. Wrong or right, it's what I thought would work best for my bike. I think as long as you do the proper break-in and keep regular oil in her until at least 1500-2000 miles, you can switch to synth at that time. The key, for me, is a proper break-in.

You figure a bike like this has been a throwaway bike from day one:

1. Regular weight = Street riding ~ Never race, never tour, just romp it stomp it occasionally.
2. Syn oils = Touring long distance. Want all that mileage out of the bags and babe weight.
3. Syn oils = Racing in extreme heat. MaxTON, trackday, club racing.
4. Reg/Syn oils = Piss inn my pants do I have zero warranty records worth of race the shit out of it when no one is looking you call me on your cell is you just got yourself a ticket is a 50/50 blend of a 50/50 chance no one calls you be running away from them anyway is they are too busy talking and driving.
5. Quarts will get you 10 more bucks in your pocket.
6. Plus 6 gets you 12 thousand trouble free miles. Add 4 thousand more miles and you get one quiet, smoother than blue's bike. Runs better than blue's bike. Has less oil in the crankcase says blueskis.
7. Come 11, I've been trying to hole a rod through a case but this case is not having it. Case after case of 30 year old low alphabet soup letters about how it meets or exceeds bullshitshot is the wallet.
8. Behind the 8-Ball are you a racer, tour monster, or just a local rider some weekend warrior like myself is ask yourself.
