romans, send your bmc race back and tell them you ordered the wrong one. maybe they'll replace it at cost of shipping with the street filter.

Not a problem Kruz. I agree with you on the BMC Race and the Pipercross. Not enough fabric per square inch I.M.O.
But I will stand on my thought's on the BMC Street or the K&N air filters.
I can only offer as proof to my choices and 100% trust in my PureOne # PL14610 oil filter and my BMC Street air filter. Remember I e-mailed you a copy of my Blackstone Lab report done at 10 thousand miles? It even stated the Insoluble's, the stuff that isn't caught by the air and oil filter, were below normal at, less than 0.01 percent. According to them, normal was 0.06 percent. Tells me both are doing a great job!!!

It's all cool Phlhnnss, we were talking about different filters is all.
Insolubles test: The insolubles test measures the amount of solids that are present in the oil. The solids are formed in several ways: oil oxidation (when the oil breaks down due to the presence of oxygen, accelerated by heat), the effectiveness of the oil filter, and blow-by past the rings. When the insolubles get too high, the oil becomes abrasive.
I always think of insolubles as the byproducts of oxidation of oil such as carbides and carboids eg. sludge or more accurately, grinding paste. Your oil is apparently doing a good job to resist thermal breakdown, also it sounds like you have good ring sealing against the cylinder wall.

Hey guys just thought would share some info I got on weekend I spoke to the owner of PM lubricants and he informed me on their oil in which i use the claim is tested that can run it for 20000km then change as i was going to do it at 6 000km and use new oil, he offered me a test to prove that can use the same oil for that long, while its free and helping bike run cooler and no noises will stick with it.If any are interested in the oil go to weekendriders.com.au and search for pm lubricants and read the posts etc.

I still have it Reeves. If it's OK with Phil, I'll forward a copy to your e-mail addy. It's a Blackstone Labs report with 2500 miles on the Rotella 5W40 synthetic and the results look very good. Silicon was low showing his street air filter was doing a good job. It's those race filters I have a problem with.

Here it is guys, 10,000 miles on a ZX-14 engine running Rotella synthetic. Oil is Rotella 5W40 Synthetic with a 2500 mile change interval. All of the numbers are outstanding. Silicon (dirt) is very low meaning his air filter is doing it's job and aluminum, iron and copper are very low indicating his cylinder walls and bearings are holding up beautifully. Notice his wear rates are about one third of the universal averages and those are set for an oil with a 1650 mile change interval!! This puts actual wear rates at about 1/5 of the universal averages! You guys can see why I'm stoked on this stuff! Insolubles are very low indicating excellent ring sealing and very little blowby. I'd like Phil to share with us which method of engine breakin he used. Fuel dilution is about average for a fuel injected motorcycle which contributes to a 63.7 viscosity reading. A 63.7 is actually very good especially condiereing fuel dilution and comparable to other full synthetic 10W40 oils like Amsoil when use in motorcycles with shared transmission and clutch after this many miles.

Reeves, you're up next, $25 and you can have a Blackstone report on your bike. I was there when your bike got broken in, Tommy did it right!

I didn't follow the manual, that's for sure, LOL!! I did just what I've always said. I broke it in by riding it the same way I intend to ride it, for as long as I own it. I didn't pull away from the dealership smoking the tire, or hitting the red-line. But, I know I hit well over 100 a couple of times on the ten or so mile trip home. All in the higher gears. Pulled into the garage and broke out the hair dryer to remove all the decals and badging. Two days later, at 300 miles, I changed the oil and filter. I used Spectro "Golden 4" simi-synthetic oil and the PureOne filter. At 600 miles I did the same. Then at 1500 miles I switched to the full synthetic, Shell Rotella 5W40 T and the PureOne oil filter.
I plan to send another sample to Blackstone my next oil change. It will mark 24,000 miles on the bike. As well as the second change with Shell's new formula for their Rotella 5W40 oil. I'll share the report when I get it back.

Blackstone Labs oil anaylis on AMSOIL 10W40 Synthetic in a Honda CBR600RR. Viscosity is slightly higher than the 5W40 Rotella (66.2 vs 63.7 SUS) but look at the metal wear rates, over twice the universal averages! In all fairness he did run this oil out to 3900 miles which accounts for at least some of the wear. Listen to the comment that the analyst makes about not using such extended drain intervals. That's why I said earlier, in a motorcycle, I change at no more than 3000 miles with a synthetic and 1500 miles with dino oil. I wanted to post this as an example of what I see as a typical oil analysis results so that you can go back and see how clean Phils engine is running in.

I ran the Royal Purple 10-40w cyclemax oil on my first oil change(not the bikes first, my first oil change) I bought it new and changed the oil right away cause I didn't know for sure when the previous owner changed it. I ran that for a little over 2000 miles, when I did the next oil change I went with Mobil 1 full synthetic. The royal purple looked new, and I didn't have any issues with the roll through with the clutch in like some have reported.

My first oil change was at 600 miles, and I used Repsol (regular) motorcycle oil and was very happy with shifting and engine smoothness. I was actually quite impressed by the way the oil felt and looked (for a conventional oil) during the next 3k miles of use.
At around 3500 miles, I did another oil change and this time went with Castrol 4T motorcycle oil (regular), and I did not like it one bit... gear changes not smooth and engine sound was not comforting.
At 6700 miles, this past weekend, I went back to my all time favorite Mobil1 Racing 4T (old name was MX4T) and the engine runs beautifully and gear changes are buttery smooth. I wanted to wait until at least 6k miles before switching to synthetic.
(All of the above are 10w40 grade, with OEM filter.)

Back to oil - I am still on my first oil change of the season. I used Repsol 4T full syn racing oil. Filled it with a gallon + a couple ounces (lower than I used to fill on previous changes). No cam chain rattle on start up, smooth, precise shifting (though N to 1 still made a noise, it was a sharper, healthier sound). The bike felt a lot better than new. That lasted 500 miles and the clunk started again. Another 1000 miles and the cam chain tensioner is noisey for a few seconds on start up and I often get a bit of a clunk going from 1 to 2 gear. It seemed like the oil had dropped so I added about 1/2 qt which brought the level up to the max on the sight glass. This improved the situation but after a few hundred miles, the level is still high and the noises are about as bad as they were before the top off.
I don't think I'll ever spend that kind of money on oil again. After a short time, it doesn't seem a whole lot better than conventional/synth blends I used last year. I'll try Mobil 1 4T next time. And next time aint going to go a whole 5000 miles on this Repsol. 2500 if it's lucky.
