Coolant level and Running Hot
07/18/11 2:37 PM

So decided to check the coolant level since the bike appears to be running hot. After sitting and is cool the coolant level is just a hair above the L-Line. Also when I ride the heat guage is never less than 3 quarters of the way towards hot. A lot of the time when going 40 or slower the heat guage will go all the way up to the "H". It will not cover the H but it is one click away. The guage goes back down once i get on the throttle and get it up to 50MPH. Is this normal. I understand the coolant expands when it heats up but does everyones run this hot? I live in colorado and it has been above 90 quite a bit lately.

Here is the deal... You are making nothing out of nothing. There are no threads that are titled, "My 14 Overheateadat piece of shit popped the headoff" kind of, don't bother looking.

Is it new? Yes.
Are the tolerances close when new and cause a lot of extra heat? Yes.
Will that eventually wear out and cool off? Yes.
Can I worry or should I just ride it and see what happens? Yes.
And if I ride it and nothing happens can I come back in a few months and report? Yes.
If I stuck my finger out, would you pull it? Yes.

Won't begin to be "broken in" until after 4,000 miles. Thats where mine started to show signs of running cooler on its own, though by then I had compensated for the pre-4k heat. So now she runs cool even when its screaming hot outside and I'm in the twisties keeping her wound up above 8k rpm.

I see it is double posting on you too.

I put a second fan on the radiator, and switched to Engine Ice, and Amsoil for oil, and purchased a Brock's Performance CT-Duals titanium exhaust system which I had double ceramic coated.

All of which contributed to lowering engine and felt temperature.

I run at about 3 bars on the highway. 4 bars highway if the weather is above 85. Never see 5 bars anymore. Never got to 6.

The full system seemed to make it run about a bar cooler. Kawi coolant. One fan.

Bumpski..

So I'm in the same boat my temp gauge seems to max out when I'm sitting at a light or not moving @ a descent speed even then its still a bar or two from max, I switched to engine ice when i first bought the bike 2yrs ago Its a must for me because it worked great on my zx9,Anyway im using wally worlds Rotella T6 and the engine ice ..Would switching the oil to Amsoil really help or maybe Mobil 1? or maybe just add a secondary fan?

There is this pattern I'm seeing on the net. And I come up with these obnoxious phrases for them.

1. Runner Uppers or the town's clown about due discuss the subject.
2. Reach Around or the tuner is paid out the wallet and the guy just wants to ride in performance mode.
3. Reach for the garage door and go back in the house or I'll think up a shorter dissing is use is missing all the bikes from 2006 on.

Ask yourself; has anyone had a radiator issue other than 'pinned blocks on the water temp scale'... "in traffic?" This is about the only subject you could find and if another one shows up, it turns out to be a non-issue. HP makes heat or Heat makes HP... Choose.

Now, reach for the door and...

Sarcasm doesn't answer my question.... I did search around found some people saying they switched out there fans and coolant and it helped others stating they live in 90+ temps and bike runs fine with stock fan and coolant. I'm just looking for an update if any of these mods help. I reached for the door and took the blue pill it led me here.

The sarcasm is there is no oil that will help. There is no liquid that will help. This is a design that loops cool just because you see the bars locked hot. Once you blow head gaskets, once you pop the radiator cap off, once you blow hoses off, yes, there might be a problem. But one 14 and year after the other and that is all around the world with desert temps, there is no recall, no update, no bulletin stating a coolant issue.

It is all in your assumption the bike gets way too hot and we are not even close. So when you sit in traffic and all of a sudden the temp bars go down, is there an issue yes or no? No. Because the fan kicks in, the bike moves in the air again, the oil changed nada, nor the wet here or there matters.

The sarcasm is less abrasive, no?

It's okay Ink....they all run on the warm side...especially in traffic.Yours is doing fine.Long as she drops back down as you get rollin...nothings wrong.I think I only heard of ONE actually 'boiling over"...in all the forum years here. Two fans?Ya...you could do that...some guys have.Probably not really necessary though.Hub's right...lots of these over in HOT countries and doing fine stock.

Keep reaching for the Blue pill...;)

Back when the Ninja 900 first came out there was a lot of concern about how hot it ran. So the next year Kawasaki fixed it. By putting a resistor in the electrical system so the gauge would read lower. Nothing was changed mechanically. Poof! No more complaints. The 14 runs with the gauge showing hot, this is normal. Mine now has 52k miles and one fan and standard coolant and still runs great. Don't sweat it.

Heres the redneck approach.

Engine Ice is merely propylene glycol. $20 a stinkin quart.
Low Tox Prestone is the same. $10 a gallon.

Makes a small difference in cooling quicker. Tested by Dirt Bike magazine a few years back. I get the small results.

Recently pulled my thermostat and tested it. It opened 20 degrees later than spec'd in the factory manual.
Ordered a new one but since I gotta wait for the new one I drilled 6 small holes in the old one and reinstalled it. Voila!! Bike gets to 3 bars after a quick ride and sitting idling, but cools off quickly once moving.
I also cleaned my radiators fins. After 6 years of year round riding it was full of dirt, sand, fir tree needles and bug parts.

If you like working on your bike try running just distilled water and 'Water Wetter"in the warm months. It runs the coolest of all. Water Wetter claims 20 degrees cooler than antifreeze and Water Wetter. I have found it actually does better than that. Then I switch back to Low Tox in the winter months.

And a couple of other Kawi's

Hey if Engine Ice makes you happy use it!!
It makes Me happy to know that I get the same results with Low Tox and water Wetter, or Radiator Relief by DEI.
Engine Ice IS Propylene Glycol and deionized water.

If other members are tired of hot legs I recommend checking your thermostat or adding 3-6 holes to it.
In 80 degree weather here I am very pleased with the resulting lower engine temps. I allow the bike to warm longer to get the oil up to operating temp.
