I have actually chased a lot of them by beeping my horn like crazy - it works for me.
I even herded a young elk down the road last month, chased him at least a football fields length. He chose to run down the road, rather than escape into then forest. I got 10 feet behind him and honked and yelled at him.
It was awesome

A rev and a down shift scares the crap out then every time. LOL You can peep the horn all day long and they don't care.
I've found multiple horn beeps to be quite effective. Like NeedforSpeed said, I sent two deer running faster than I've ever seen them running beeping my horn several times. I think it creates excitment where as just sustaining the horn might cause curiosity? It's like they look around and fixate on where the sound comes from. Where as the beeping is maybe more like an animal alarm call (or who knows...not a deer psychologist)
