Removing Flames
07/03/09 11:34 AM

I have the 2008 SE with grey flames and im not too into flames really, i was thinking about pulling them off and need some advise.

I was just wondering if anyone else has done this and if it was successful and didnt leave places where they used to be, or if the flames are clear coated over (which im pretty sure there not on ZX14's) And if any of yall have done this that would be cool if you could send me some pictures of it done so i have a better idea of what it will look like even if you have the white 07 with the flames off.

Thanks guys,

Havent seen them (flames), but I have removed the "Ninja' off the side. It was not clear coated over. I set it out in the sun for a bit and they came off fairly easily.

The "Kawasaki" logos are clear coared over.

If you were going to buy a used bike, all the decals off it, would you buy it? Not me. And you want top dollar?

Suck eggs, kid! Better yet, sit on the egg till it hatches you want that premium price is a low miler.

Just do it. If nobody else has, you'll be unique.

If you cant get the stickers up, that means they're clearcoated.

The flames should come off just like the "Ninja" sticker and "ZX-14" logos I took off of mine.

Get an ice cold beer and your wife/girlfriend's hair dryer. Heat up the decals and peel them off slowly. The decals on mine were a two beer job....... you've got a lot of flames there, so I'd recommend at least four beers!!!

I used "Goo Gone" citrus cleaner to make sure all the glue was off. Then I waxed it up and you can't tell there was ever a decal there.

The only other advice I've got is...... borrow the hair dryer from your wife OR your girlfriend..... it can get kind of dicey if you return the wrong one to the wrong gal!!

Good luck - I think it will be an awesome looking bike w/out the silver flame crap on it!

I like the flames on both the o7 and the 08 SE but the 08 doesn't need them - I mean, looks great with or without. The design is elaborate enough that I wouldn't even have noticed the flames were missing right away.

I like the 08 SE with the decals off.

The 07 SE looks like sh*t without them though IMHO.

Well Ninjadude,ya did good gettin those off!Way to go!!But me personally,I'd have kept em on there-WHY? Have you ever noticed what the Busa lettering looks like from the side or front when you're going by or cruising with(I mean the BUSA LOGO on the midfairing)(the logo on the 04's,05's).It changes color quite nicely-VERY nicely I might add.Makes the bike look like it's alive or something. Those flames of yours do the same shimmering act.But the NINJA flames look MUCH BETTER cause they follow the lines of yer bike, and cover a bigger area.Just my .02!But she looks fine without as well.Good Job!

Well, i dont know if yall have seen the 08 SE in the sun but the flames are not just grey. They look like oil on pavement when it rains, it was rainbow colored.

The bike looks really good with the flames off. I have never liked flames on anything, and really think Japanese manufacturers should give it a rest with all these extra graphics.

I like the looks of your bike without them. Now please take your bike out to a nice area with lots of green lawn around it and take a nice picture of it and share. All the clutter behind the bike in the above pic is not doing the bike any justice! :)))

I think the bike looks GREAT without the flames. I have the same 08 SE as you and I've been thinking about getting rid of mine as well. How long did it take you? Did they come off easily?

I actually did it at two different occasions. First, i pulled the flames off the tail section cutting around the "ZX-14" logo with a razor blade and that probably took 30 min. and then a few weeks later took the front off and it took about and hour and a half and cutting around the "Ninja" perfectly took a while.

I suggest if you pull them off start lifting at a corner and pull away as you pull up, it helps to not leave any sticky stuff and it will leave some on the paint but i just rubbed it with my finger and it would start to ball up and come off and you can never tell they were there.

I also have removed my flames. Haven't decided about the rear ones yet. Anybody have any info about removing the giant block Kawasaki letters on the tank? I don't think theres any clear coat on the Flat Black paint?

Looks good but all 14s look 10x better with seat cowl on.

..would like to get those block letters off the tank.

The other 08 colors have the tank emblem under 1/16" of clear coat. Repaint would be the best way to go. I do prefer the "KAWASAKI" emblem on the side like the 06.

Rook....are you saying that all the 08 models, including the SE, have clear coat over the tank letters? I haven't found any definitive info on whether the SE does or doesn't yet? Thanks for any info you have about this.

I really liked the way the Brocks ceramic Black pipe looked on it...but putting on the OZ black wheels was a huge improvement in looks IMO. The stock red wheels were just a little too much Red for me. And what a difference they made in handling...amazing.

I was making the assumption that all 14s with the Kaw emblem on the tank had a thick layer of clear coat over the emblem stickers.......except the 08 SE because that one is satin black. No high gloss=no clear coat??

All I can say is that my 08 midnight Sapphire blue has a heavy coat of clear coat on the tank. I have heard one other person comment that his was the same and he was unable to remove the stickers from the tank for that reason.

I really don't recall if the 08 SE stickers were right on the surface or under clearcoat.....but there are a coupl 08 se owners around here who could tell you.

Gotcha....I hope the other 08 SE owners chime in. I was loking at the info on them at color-rite and their site info states that the flat black doesn't have a clear coat. When you order the flat black touch up paint..they don't offer a clear coat to go with it as the factory didn't use one. I tried to get info out of Kawi...but haven't had any success there. Thanks again for your input.
