need to vent
07/03/09 2:26 PM

so i went to finally get my inspection sticker today. is been raining and cloudy all summer with few days to ride. so this morning i checked the weather "scattered thunderstorms" fuck it, it looks nice out ill take the bike out. i get my sticker and as the man passes me my registration the skys open up and it starts to pour. at this point my buddys house is down the street so i head for there.
i come to an intersection where the right lane is for straight and right turns and the left lane is only for left turns. the light green so i get in the right lane and am a few feet from the intersection when the van in the left lane decides to go right instead and cuts right in front of me. i get on the brakes just a tad to hard for the slick surface and the bike washes out under me. i slide about 10 feet before stopping. i hop off the bike and looked at the van, the man stopped briefly before speeding off around the corner. im alright, but the bikes fairings are scratched up pretty bad on the left side.
it just pisses me off how little people care about motorcyclists in this state. ive had close calls before but this is my first time laying the 14 down :(

Did you get the van's license number? What state are you in?

Sorry to hear about this, but glad you are OK. -bg

no go on the license plate. i rode across the street to a gas station ans asked everyone there, and still none. they were all focused of if i was ok, which was nice to hear. i stayed there for a few min too see if any other car followed him to get a plate too. after a drink of cola i checked the bike over again and headed off to my buddys house.

im in massachusetts. i loved when i worked in new hampshire, everyone in that state rides and has a second set of eyes out for bikers year round.

Glad you weren't hurt, and sorry about your bike.

I live in NH and I agree, motorcycles are extremely common and it seems to make people more aware since 1/2 the cagers are probably bikers too. I'm sorry you don't have the same empathy in MA bro... most frustrating indeed. If its an area you frequent maybe you will luck out and see the van again?

somehow the pipes got little damage. the way the bike fell, the majority of the damage was toward the front than the rear of the sides. the most visible damages were on the mirror and lower fairing. since the plastic itself is a black, he flat black paint blends well with it, but the red on the lower fairing is a different story. the mirror also cracked quite a bit. i got some satin sprain paint and touched up a few of the worst spots on the black. i have to take a look at it in the sun so see if their are any crack tomorrow.

i still feel very lucky. the cars behind me stopped instantly, if someone hadent been paying attention it could have been different problems. but for this weekend i just plan on relaxing and enjoying the fireworks and a few drinks.

glad you're alright ray. our summers are just the opposite. we haven't had any rain here all summer with 100+ degree days! i have to water the yard every other day to keep it from looking like a hay field. the good side is sticky tires and dry roads. you just have to ride in the morning or at night to keep from passing out on the side of the road! i hope you find the bastard that cut you off!

Yea, There's no end to the idiots out there. I've been through the same thing before and it's hard to stop feeling the rage.
You might try the internet for fairing pieces. You have to be quick cause they go fast. A lot of bikes get totaled from being messed up on one side only. I had some of mine repainted. With bondo et al the local painter wanted $200 a piece for fairing parts. The retailers really screw us when it comes to selling new plastic.
Good luck
