Do I have to call BS?
05/18/13 6:31 PM

Let me start by saying I mean the title as a joke.

I know some have stacked the GenMar's and Helibars on their bikes. I only have the GenMar's that I put on tonight, well partially put on.

The clutch side was more than fine, but I almost couldn't get my clipon on top of the GenMar base. My brake line is so tight.

I see a "block" sort of thing where my brake line hooks into then come back out of, and that block is in a bracket. Did any of you have to remove it to free your line up some? I don't want to pull it apart it wont do me any good or cause to hand up on something while turning? Here are a couple pics to illustrate what I am talking about.

I love this bike but I have just had some of the silliest things when it comes to working on this bike. I will admit some were self-inflicted ( I guess they all were since the bike worked as stock LOL)

This is as close to getting my right side bar bolted down without a quite a bit of pressure.

This is the block I am talking about. The blue you see is the top of my front fender looking down from the left side of the cluster. If you look on the upper side of the block you can see the brake line fitting going into it.

I've got genmars on there right now...NO brake line tightness issues at all.No fiddling with the ABS block or anything. Not sure though what you mean by 'tight'...it won't be any slack(extra)left over...but it won't be 'too tight' either.Mine wasn't.

I don't have ABS, I am not sure what that block is for. I scratched the crap outta my right block trying to get the bars on top of them. that is how little wiggle room I have to get them on. And then the bolt everything together I have to mash down on the back of the bars and block just to get the holes to line up.

I did, when I first bought my bike, loosen the brake and clutch mounts and rotated them forward. It helped my brake wrist ache less pointing the lever forward towards the ground. I can try to rotate them back...

I wanted to get aftermarket brake lines, but not this year hmm, I might anyway. My trip to TN is closing in fast (June 2-7 if anyone is going to be down there :-) ) I don't know if I personally have time to do it, wonder if my shop could slide me in? That is still secondary. If I can get the room I need I would rather just do the brakes over the winter.

Thanks for the input GRN14.

Update:
Damn it, still no room. I don't think I could fit a piece of folder paper between my break line and shock its that tight. And of course it's late Saturday night so my dealer isn't open tomorrow. Sorry for whining, this just pisses me off is all.

I am willing to entertain other ideas that are out there... short of no using the GenMar's ;) I also have a C14 seat on its way to me too, wonder what the hell won't fit on that when it gets here, probably next Saturday night LOL (crazy maniacal laugh muwhahahaha)

Okay...I see it now....I thought yours had ABS.The block and line length 'could' be different.I have Heli's and Genmars on mine...they fit no prob.Yours...could be.I had helis on my first one...they fit fine...no real tightness that I can remember...so...sorry....my bad.You could do as you said...rotating the perch..IDK if you'll be able to to get enough slack.OR modify that bracket some to get enough side movement to slacken up that line?I did that on my 07...modded the bracket...drilled another mount hole or something to move it over when I installed LSL's.It worked. You should be able to do something similar. It doesn't HAVE to be configured exactly as it is in there now. It's a simple fix....and yeah...I do have slack on my front line going down to that block...so it must be different somehow.

"I scratched the crap outta my right block"...IDK what you mean here?I'm talking about the junction block on the frame just on the right side at the bottom of the lower triple tree.Mounted with a bolt there(maybe two).In a bracket.Mod that bracket so you can bring that block over to the right some more...about a half inch or so.That should work.Just make sure you can turn the bars fully to each side without pulling on that brake line.I'd pull the mount bolt out....configure the Genmar...then go from there seeing how much you need to move the brake junction block over to the right. Then mod the bracket as needed.

Grn14, the block I was referring to was the right riser block. The hose was so tight when finessed the bar on to it I scratched the crap outta it with my bar mounts.

Anrkizm95, thanks man. I will unbolt it. I just didn't want to undo something in a tight space and have to put it back. Not fun with my ham hands lol. Think of Wreck-it-Ralph movie lol.

The small block in the 2nd photo is for the front brake. On ABS equipped bikes there are also 2 similar blocks on the RHS of the head stock. The front brake hose from the front master cylinder on ABS bikes connects to one of these and there is PLENTY of slack in the hose. Obviously the front brake hose on bikes with no ABS connects directly to the block in your photo and is much shorter. Looks like you may need a longer hose.
Personally, there's no way I'd be zip tying a brake hose connector block back onto the frame and leaving it like that. JMO

Yeah...the ABS ones have a lot more line slack than the non-abs...I didn't mention that at first...I should have.

So I am getting ready to take my bike to the local shop to have Spiegler front and rear lines put on. Since Spiegler is located in Dayton they should have my order in the shop by EOD. And maybe have my bike done by tomorrow.

That means my $100 risers are going to cost me an additional $350 after labor. Oh well, I was going to lines next year, but one more thing I'm crossing off early I guess :-)

Hello fellow Ohioan! I'm very seriously considering picking up a 2012 Blue ZX14R as well :). How are you liking it so far?

Risers is on my list of first mods to do...and I am very saddened to learn that it can't be done without swapping brake lines. Is there anything that can be done other than new brake lines? How long did the line swap end up costing you? I wonder if I could work the cost of the install into the purchase price...

How did your trip turn out on the bike?

I have heli-bars, they are not as "tall" as the gen mars, so there was no problem mounting them on my non-ABS bike,

As far as buying the 2012 blue ZX14, I have no regrets at all, it is an awesome bike ! the only thing I might have done diffrently, is to have gotten ABS, and of course, I still love that green color !!

Hey Bluesun,

I love the bike, the trip was great. I think it was about 1600 miles in 5 days and 4 nights.

The risers were really nice, I also added a concours seat for a little added cushion for a long rides. I have since put the stock seat back on.

I ended up paying $350 for the risers and cables and only took them 1 day to complete. If you are capable of replacing the lines that will reduce the costs a lot. I think they charged me right about $100 for labor at a rate of $80/hr.

Carabuser is right, I would get the ABS version as well... for 2 reasons. 1. ABS, and 2 I understand that the lines are longer on the ABS bikes so the new lines would not be needed.

The new lines really are nice and makes the braking much stronger.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply :).

I wish I could get the ABS version, but I'm looking at overstock new 2012's in blue (like yours!). They do not come with ABS to my knowledge -- although I could be mistaken. ABS is one of those things that wouldn't be bad to have, but is not a deal breaker. I can get an overstock 2012 currently for about $12.5k or so out the door. It looks like the 2013's with ABS are more along the lines of like $15k. That's quite a price jump. That and the blue looks so damn nice.

I think what I'll do (assuming I get one, which I'll know sometime this week or next) is get helibar risers and see how those pan out. I'm also considering lowering it an inch (I'm ~5'6/5'7 so it's just a hair too tall), and maybe getting a corbin seat that may raise the bars a bit from my seating position.

Any/all feedback, suggestions, warnings, heads up, etc anyone can think of regarding my purchasing plans, please feel free to weigh in!

Yeah the other guys on this site don't know what cool is... Blue rocks :-)

You're right the ABS is only out for the 2013's.

Also check out Honda East. They are In Toledo. I drove up there from Dayton and rode my bike home. I bought it new last year for a GREAT price. I walked out the door for $15,300 and that included everything and the extended 4 yr warranty.

As for Amy warnings... Get ready for some tickets. I got a high speed driving award last month. First g-damn one in 15 years! SOB.
