Low power mode?
05/13/13 7:57 PM

So out of curiosity, does anyone ever use low power mode? And why?

Personally I used mine on the way home when I bought it and my dyno guy used it just to see what it would pull.

I used it a couple of times but found myself using full throttle way too much. Felt a lot like riding my previous 2006 ZX14.

That's my take, street. Punchy like the '06. Almost about dead even with F1. But I had no flies, no stock air cleaner. It would wheelie with just a too brisk a throttle opening.

I've never used the LP mode. On a bike this heavy and powerful with no TC it maybe has some use but on a bike with a TC system as good as that fitted to the 2012 ZZR1400/2013 ZX14R what is the point of it? The TC is effectively a 'multi power' mode, dialling in just enough for any given road condition so why bother even equipping the bike with a LP mode in the first place? Please educate me somebody.

I actually went out for an hour tonight and switched back and forth a little while riding... I can do that since I have a flashed ECU ;-). It really does knock it down, I forgot how much. I can see where I might use it on long interstate rides... Maybe. It does take to violent edge of the high rpm twists.

I've never used any of the low power modes on this monster. I use high power mode and TC 1, like it comes default from the factory. For you youngsters, the mode you really have to concentrate on and learn to control is the "wrist mode". Fine tune that and you just might live long enough to actually enjoy this wonderful passion of ours!

WOLFMAN: Yes, there is a big difference in power comparing an earlier model with a 2012/13. However, an earlier model can certainly be modified to make the same power.

HUB: I am truly humbled that you agree with me...lol !!!!

DARRYLE: My 06 was a good bike but not a great bike. I didnt like the oil pan bolt sticking down so far below the oil pan, the low rpm lack of power, the poor gas mileage, the heat issues and the feeling I was riding a big heavy bike. All those things can be changed. GRN14 and I both agree that in reality there is nothing that needs to be changed on the 2012. On the 06, I lowered it and changed the gearing. I have done neither to the 2012. I am not saying the earlier models were bad. I am saying the 2012/13 models are better as they should be.

My boy BEAST has a 2010 gen with a full system. He says I have more torque, but these hyperbikes are so fast It would be hard to tell who is faster. Beast or the Wolfman. I will say my boy is a svelt 175 and I a rotund 230. That makes a difference too!

My 07 had BST'S no flys brock/Hindle street meg and custom map definitely not a dog, more like a menopausal wife,my 2012 has BST'S full race Hindle custom map, my 07 definitely had more personality and required more respect,I had the 07 down to 500 lbs 184 hp .The 2012 is down to 535lbs 205 hp.Sorry I cannot accept a gen 1 as slow. To me she is like an old girlfriend,If she was a male I'd call her HUB some one to be respected

Don't forget, my bike is not in the same league as yours in the performance category. I just remember riding a peaky 14 that would blow my stocker away. And no, I was assuming the subs were not in play. I know how slow opening they were in '06, but with the slight mod, big difference. They also had bigger injectors. Something mean was going on first year. There is no other comparison after that. The '08 had no bottom like the '06 helping out that slow sub opening. The '08 remember, had smaller [injector] cc internals. That's why I say the '06 is a keeper. It's a stripped R in Full mode already.

Low mode is less lead if I hook up my widow cover and see the timing change at the pickup magnet. Watch for a fuel drop with an inline fuel pressure line gauge. Watch the injector's duty cycle at the AFR meter. One more camera at the subs.

Once you wrinkle a tone wheel window against the other, the TPS taking notes, something has to happen at those points of interest. Mid mode has to bring on more ignition lead which means more time to begin the flame front which means more fuel to burn which makes more power.

Full mode is smoother. Only think that I could recognize a change in fueling was the more fuel, the smoother... Up to a point. Overich she had lots of bottom grunt. The R seems smooth rich, but lean crisp at the same time. No hez WATTSoever.

Once this engine gets in it's torque/HP meat in the rpm range...it pulls like IDK what.Scarey pulling...pulling that I want to let up on...I've hit it in like 2nd at around 6k...and it blasted forward and the rpm's climbed so fast...it actually had my head spinning for a second or two.I still haven't tapped the powerband like I probably eventually will...I ride in F-off.I'm finding this mode is giving some very 'new' characteristics to this rippin machine.I mean...they were there all the time...but she feels a bit different in this mode...take-off wise....roll-on wise...shift wise. There is also a noticeable smoothness in this mode.IDK what it is...what's creating it...but it's there all right.Like the motor's singing.Hard to explain here. She's a great bike, quite a bit different than my 07 somewhat modded.I'm happy for sure.Mine has the flashed ECU...and the rpm limiter is kicking in at right around 12K...right in there. There's usable power in there...You get this baby in the right gearing scenario...and gas her...you know she's dangerously fast and efficient.....plenty enough for this geezer;)I'm all smiles every time I get on it and run up through the gears...not EVEN near wide open. And all the time...up or down...smooth.Like she's a brand new bike.Amazing IMO.

Ivan made a statement to me when we were talking...he said.."most guys ride this bike in F-off".I was thinking..."shit,not me...why would you?"...and I can see why now...as I ride...that this mode is different than the KTRC activated settings(1,2,3).There IS something different with it off.I never really noticed it 'before'.But it's there.Something.

Grn14 wow im sooooo glad u brought up riding with trc off. I thought I was nutz or something. I always rode in tc1 always, I figured why not have some traction control just in case. Well this past weekend we had nice temperature and I figured my tires we're nice and warm, so I took it off tc1 and man it really does feel snappier. I thought it was a placebo effect. I thought I was crazy but it really does feel pepperier with it off. Man u made me feel so much better now. I'm going to keep it off now that the temps are getting better. Thanks grn!!!!

IMO, "Low Power" mode is for noobs.

Like me.

I survived my 1st 6 month riding this machine thanks largly to it's programmability (and selecting low power during that time).

However, I may be the exception. This was my very first sports bike.

I'm a year in, now, and I've long ago (thats what it feels like anyway) switched to "Full Power" mode, and thoroughly enjoying it.

BUT, my skin is intact, and so is my cycle.

When I first got it it kept it in low power mode and traction control 3.

Now I ride all the time in full and traction control 1.

I can see how the low power mode would give someone just getting used to the force this bike makes, and harnessing that a bit. I think its supposed to be like 75% on low power mode. I never pushed it while in low, cause that was not the point, but it is a nice feature to have, I guess. I imagine it don't get used much after the rider has had the bike a while, though.

JUst my two cents.

Yes, I've not yet fully tapped into this monster's *meat*, but I have felt enough to be scared and humbled by what I have felt.

You can be on the highway in third, rolling along at, say, 3,000 rpm.............downshift and crack the throttle to get into a higher rpm/powerband range, and my GOD this thing comes to life and devours the open road at lightning speed. I would imagine it'd pull the front tire in second, and possibly third, but I've not got enough balls to try it. LOL

Amazing machine. Its so exciting to own one..

I know I'm late to the discussion. But I finally found a use for low power mode.

If you search my u/n I posted about playing around with my friend on his FZ1. short version: he and I jumped on it at about a 10mph roll, I gave him the hit (2 bike lead) and as I was shifting to 2nd I passed him on 1 wheel... by the time I ran out 2nd I was 5+ bikes in front.

We got out last saturday for a ride, and I didn't tell him I had it in low power mode all day. when we jumped on it form a 3rd gear roll at 60-70ish, I gave him the hit again (1 bike lead) and through 3rd (and just into 4th) I only gained 2-3 bikes on him.

moral of the story, it makes it more fun to race your friends with slower bikes. lol.
