whats the best gear setup for the zx14????
11/30/09 7:57 PM

Just looking for some who've changed their gears and liked it!

I just bought an 06 and pulled out the flies. Loved it. Just ordered the Muzzy m14 exhaust and power commander. Honestly I am on the fence with gears because I am a top end junky, but also loves when the front end comes up real easy. Whats the best compromise. Figure I would ask you all who have done it and then just do it once.

Thanks in advance :)

Todd

Heck-you aint hard to please are ya! Okay-me-17/42.Wasn't enough pop for me.Went to 16/42-NICE-give ya the wheelies-BUT-I topped out at 182 mph(I loves top end as well!!!).So far-enjoy this gearing combo-gives plenty of punch to yer "no-fly zone" mod there.Went with 16/43(for a short bit).Lost quite a bit of top end-HOWEVER-the engine and trans seemed to be quite transformed. She shifted a lot smoother, quicker, and had a good bit of acceleration.BUT-I didn't keep it on there long enough to check out her real potential with that gearing. When I saw 6th gear approaching so quickly-and having my fuel mileage drop-I wasn't willing to sacrifice that for "more punch"She always seemed like she should be "going into another gear" when she was in 6th.16/42 is IMO a very good medium.Plenty of kick, and still retains decent fuel mileage.

^^16/43 seems to be the most popular choice from all I've read. I always wonder about 17/45. How come nobody ever leaves the front sprocket and goes to a 45 in back?

Uses up too many links and shortens up the wheelbase.

16/42 gearing.

^^Thanks. What is so bad about shortening the wheelbase - rougher ride, maybe? A longer chain won't give you a wheelbase similar to OEM?

Being that we are "blurbing" a little about gearing and top end,,,,,(I'm not a top end guy at all! ) my combo of a 16/41 with no speedo healer or top end derestrictions netted me a top speed (GPS verified) of............169.2 mph.

It felt faster though...............I love that line !!!

agree with tuneit when you change the rear it can get costly. remember for ever tooth you go down on the front it equals +3 on the rear. so for the budget minded person $20 is cheaper than $200+

What they are feeling is more thrust.

The 14 is already a MONSTER with a shorter wheelbase combined with twisting the throttle hard it’s likely to put you on your back.
Perfect for those who like wheelies!

I just put on a 43 tooth rear sprocket and I really enjoy it. I wasn't looking for a major difference and the 43 gives me a little extra pickup down low. I'm sure it will still go as fast as I want it to go, since I don't have a straight away around here where I get over 130.

Haven't noticed any significant difference in gas mileage, but I don't pay that much attention. I have a 4WD van that costs $75 to fill the tank. After that filling the bike is NBD! Probably would have been happy with 44 also but I tend to do stuff in small steps. I've heard that the 16T front makes a little noise.
I did need a longer chain too which is more $ than the sprocket. I especially like that it is reving a little higher in slow zones and parking lots. Without restrictions in the exhaust, it runs a little rough at 15k-25k. This smooths it out some. And then makes a strong get-away!

What about the noise factor? Is it really significant?

I'll tell ya-I noticed a wee bit of gear whine at first-but that went away after a bit.NOT offensive actually. You want to get the Zephyr sprocket however(16T)-it's got the rubber dampeners on it like our stock 17's.(I think it's a 95 Zephyr?)Somewhere in that year range. You WILL be surprised how quickly you run through the gears-it won't be your imagination(speed increase). But it will seem weird at first.

Scott I think you meant to say -1 in the front is = to 2 1/2 in the back ?
