Traction control is quick
05/13/13 8:41 PM

Was going around a slow 90 degree curve today and while I was still leaned over hit the throttle a little too hard. The back tire spun and slid. Nothing major or close to an accident but the kind of skid/slip/spin that you feel and instantly left off the throttle. You have all done it. I felt the spin/slip and before I could let off the throttle the traction control interupted the power. It beat me !!!

TC saved my ass a couple times already this year on sand when turning at intersections.

I'm curious myself. I have been riding around on 3 and have yet to see that light flash. I'm still breaking in, though.

I keep mine on 1 unless it is raining. It allows the front tire to slightly come off the ground on hard accelerations but also sets it back down very gently with no thought from me to my hand.

So 1 is enough to stop wheelies?

I can go 12 o'clock in TC1 if I power wheelie it, but the TC sets it back down nicely.

Yes...that's what I meant actually..it will stop a wheelie...how fast the wheel spin difference is between the front(off the ground)and the rear...but it won't automatically stop a wheelie...yeah...that's what I meant. You could flip this bike if you powered it right with TC1.

I'm riding in TC-off now.It actually seems to lift 'easier' with this setting...but it could easily get away from ya I think.Small lofts is all I do anyway. This works fine for that.

" yet to see that light flash"...well..the light won't flash...but the TC 'scale" will run to the right when it's activated.Kinda hard to catch when you're powering up and rollin fast...but yeah, you can see it if you watch it.Actually,it's a good little display to have...sometimes you don't 'feel' the wheel spinning...yet the scale is moving briskly to the right. The wheel spin can be manipulated by learning the inputs that move that display. It's going to display differently with the three settings.Depending on which setting...it will start 'activating' PRIOR to a possible wheel slip scenario. If the lamp comes on...there's a problem with your KTRC.Course, you knew that;)

Grn14: I was in full power and traction control 2. Thats where I usually ride. I dont like unexpected wheelies and I have found the bike will only do very low, very short wheelies in 2. I tried 3 once and that is really a downer. It felt like a different bike. I also rode a few days in low power mode but was using full throttle way too much. F and 2 works good for me. Kawasaki could use one more mode REAR TIRE SAVER !!!!!

Does anyone know if you can do a burnout in any of the TC modes? If you can what happens if you take off with the wheel spinning?

Darryle hit gravel on a skid up here on Greenlane (no pun intended). The trac control sorted out this problem. On any previous bike I would have eaten dirt on the laydown! I had knee surgery and was riding too soon. Went for the brake and with knumb foot locked em up without feeling it. Thank TC!!!

So yeah, I didn't read the manual all that closely. :)

I thought the TC light on the tach is what came on when it kicks in, hence the reason why I thought I had never activated it.

Turns out I can activate it pretty easily in modes 2 & 3; just give it some gas in a corner.

The response is very non-invasive. If I didn't have a meter telling me what was going on, I'd have no idea it was even working.

I have yet to see it come alive in mode 1, though.

I'm impressed!

Find yourself some gravel and put it in TC3 then pin the throttle! You will definetly notice the TC and its quite impressive how well and quickly it reacts. A very slight spin and suddenly no power, period.

I wasn't trying for a wheelie, but got on it a bit and as a result, I got my front end up a little bit in trac one the other day. But with a bike this big and heavy, the front end barely leaving the ground is enough for me.

There's definitely no doubt that the KTRC will 'save' ya in a corner...on setting 2 or 3.Setting 1....It's my riding impression that it will not save you 'in time' depending on the lean and velocity.I've had it bring wheelies back down...but there are times when it doesn't react quick enough(for my likes)to match the lifting speed this bike can create in a split second in first.Since the two parameters are the wheel spin differential(except for 2 or 3)...there is enough power in there to flip the bike before it can actually 'sense' a front wheel slowdown(from the centrifugal force of the wheel) in a loft.I've had mine lift so quickly a couple of times...I had to get off the gas...I could tell it wasn't gonna react in time.Other times...when moving forward, then gassing her...the front wheel was spinning pretty good and it took a couple of seconds for the front wheel to slow enough for the KTRC to sense it.So I have to be careful when I'm trying to wheelie. It can catch me off guard so to speak.I ride with it off now.So all the power and lift is totally dependent on my wrist...which is fine.

Once the bike is moving(like in a corner)the differential between front and rear is only going to normally be sensed at the rear wheel(both actually, but you know what I mean)...spin...which could be 'too late' to actually get out of a slide situation.I'm just thinking out loud here now.The 2 and 3 settings are 'proactive'...they'll activate before a slide situation occurs. But not 1.Not that I can tell anyway.Good for stopping lift...depending...but that's(IMO) about it.1's the least intrusive.Leaned in and rolling fast...you probably don't want it allowing any spin or slide at all....but that's just me.So far riding...I haven't experienced any rear wheel loss of grip cornering or anything...in any setting. But then again...I haven't tried to break the rear loose either. Some guys want it break loose. Not me.But I'm riding now with it off.I'm not worried, cause I wasn't hitting that point before.Nothing's changed for me in that respect.I do like it 'off' though now.I can also switch mine 'on the fly'...which is a nice feature with this flash. It also stays in the mode I set it to when I start back up again.

TC did not save my ass today. ABS might have, if I had ABS. It was a small bit of skill and a crap load of luck that saved me. Mostly luck. Was coming in hot off a real nice interstate exit sweeper pushing the girl to her limits and when I got to the top I saw light was green so I decided to keep the speed and brake hard to make a sharp right at the intersection still pushing her to the limit. Suddenly I saw sand and lots of it throughout the whole intersection, oh fcuuuuk!!! I had that dreaded feeling this was gonna painful low side right into the car sitting in the other lane. I knew I was already at limit with the brakes to keep traction but squeezed a hair tighter anyway when suddenly the ass end let out the loudest squeal and comes sliding out on me. My throttle hand jerked when I counter steered to keep the machine up right causing the rpm to sykrocket, luck had it I already the the clutch pulled in. So with the machine in a deathslide heading straight at the car sitting in the other lane I released the rear brake, popped the clutch against all natural instinct, goosed the throttle and barely managed to flat track the bitch sideways around the corner liked I had meant to do that on purpose. TC might have saved my ass by not being on cause I don't think I would have been able to make it had it intervened. Man that was one hell of an adrenaline rush. I'm sure the people in their vehicles watching were shitting about as hard as I was.

Moral of the story TC ain't always the best option when you do dumb shit. I should have know I wouldn't make it and kept going straight through back onto the on ramp instead of making the turn.

Nasty my bro! I want you with us for a long time! I ride like she's a rapped ape a fair amount, but I try not to when vehicles or risks are present that outweigh all I have to lose. I am not preaching, I am just glad you made it through that! Reading your post, I know exactly what happened and the only wayy to make it through that is to do what you did. The math and reactions in your head were flawless, your riding ability and balls are well accounted for! Cheers to riding another day!!!!
