I don't mind trying some cheapo parts, especially ig there's some history that can be researched, but I wouldn't want to be the guy to test a cheap helmet.

That is a nice lookin helmet! Very unique! On that note, does the price of a helmet mean better protection? Is DOT certified not enough? Was wondering if anyone has ever heard of a Shoei or Arai saving someone's melon where say an HJC might not have been enough? I've always wondered about this. I've tried to stay somewhere in the middle price wise. I usually spend around $150 to $200 on my helmets. How cheap should be a red flag?

This one was $19.95 and $13.95 for shipping. Is that too cheap ???

I have crashed wearing a Shoei and I have crashed wearing an Arai. No head injuries either time. Currently have 2 Shoeis. I know there are some less expensive helmets that PROBABLY offer the same amount of protection, but to me, comfort and noise abatement are nearly, but not quite as important as protection.
If you find a quiet, comfortable helmet that you like the looks of,and you know offers maximum protection for your skull, price becomes meaningless.

Crashed in Arais three times now....definitely smacked my head.Helmet?threw em out. They were pretty gouged up.Probably could have still used em....You never really know in a crash.A cheaper helmet may work just as well....depending.Some crashes...it's not probably gonna matter much....crunched is crunched.Slides....smaller impacts...who knows?Maybe it's those 'big hits' where the more expensive lids come into play...but a head-on collision or something like that....I think yer gonna go away no matter what yer wearin?Middle of the road is probably fine...I don't see why not?I'd be slightly cautious about getting one for 19.00 though....you can never predict where yer heads gonna hit in any crash...happens so quickly.

"Danno, it's not necessarily the price of the helmet, but in this case streetracer is importing a no-name helmet, from a country that has no standards, from a manufacturer that has nothing to lose if the product doesn't hold up in a crash."
I would agree. Well said.
I think its obviously you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg on a DOT approved helmet, but I’ve never heard of one (DOT approved) being this low priced.
I also would not trust helmet that cost this price to actually be DOT approved.
Just my opinion.

I don't need a helmet,as long as I land on my head I'll be fine .On a serious note I crashed in 06 at 200 kph,I was wearing a shoe RF 1000,pretty certain it saved my life

I am NOT an expert by any means BUT. Those test show a helmet taking all of the force concentrated on one tiny point. That is a worse case scenario. You are more likley to hit your head on a much broader surface. Even the edge of a curb would distribute the force over a larger area. A sphere will touch in one small point. A spike obviously the same only worse.
If you can afford an expensive helmet I guess you will be covered for the low speed impact with a sharp object to the head. If it is an impact with a fixed object over 30 mph you will probably die if you hit your head squarely and it will not matter if you have on an expensive helmet, a cheap helmet or no helmet. ..but wear a helmet. Most of my close calls were at lower speeds or I slowed down quite a bit by the time it got really hairy.

drag you tested the theory and are in need of a replacement. Couldn't help noticing the two lids you are looking at now are def on the pricey side. Can't put a price on peace of mind (especially if it keeps your mind in one piece).

Sorry to chip in with the obvious but I really believe someone has to say this.
Very simply you get what you pay for.
No name or copied jackets, gloves and helmets at the prices quoted are a special to fail when they are needed most.
You cannot produce a safe helmet for $20.
Do i know this for sure? No, i do not.
But I can assure you I will never be the one to test that theory.
We are all involved with a relatively dangerous past time. We need every bit of protection should we unfortunately be in a situation to need it.
Its not like buying a cheap shirt, wearing it and washing it once only for it to fall apart and thinking "Well I learn't my lesson not to do that again".
Unfortunately we as riders don't really have that luxury.
Every single piece of our bike is replaceable. We however are not.
I am not trying to tell anyone what to do. These are just my opinions.
But I am just asking for thought to be given to protection, safety and the long term over simple short term cost...

Glad you are okay dragking !!!! I had a long ride today with my cheap gloves, cheap jacket, cheap helmet, cheap exhaust, cheap windscreen, cheap foot pegs, cheap tail tidy and expensive bike. Hit a record 73 degrees here so that was a nice surprise. The bike continues to amaze me.

Someone said to me many years ago cheap head , cheap helmet.
Got 2 shoeis one is 2002 vintage looks like brand new. just don`t wear it coz of the age factor.
The other is 4 years old and also looks new , but I will only use it for 12 more months for the same reason.
Works out to a cup of coffee a week to wear a top quality lid.
Go figure.
Your helmet is the most important bit of safety gear you will need.
BTW I never ride without jacket, gloves, boots etc.
If you come of without gloves you will need a good mate to wipe your ass , and none of my mates like me thzt much.
Just my two cents worth

I find it amazing that anyone would climb on a bike that can do 150 mph in 10 seconds with the cheapest helmet and gear they can find.
Kind of like going for a ride in a Top Fuel dragster with a lap belt for a safety harness.....,
I guess if you never hit the asphalt at high speeds it wont bother you....,
May last tarmac sampling took place at a track day.
Destroyed $1400 of safety gear.
I am alive due to my helmet being a quality unit.
I have all my skin due to quality leathers. I can walk due to quality race boots. My hands function normally due to quality race gloves.
The ZX6, I never rode again....,
Hope you never test that gear Bro....,you only get one shot at this deal....,hell of a gamble.

I'm not going to comment on helmets but as far as gear goes, virtually EVERY piece of Alpinestar gear I have had has fallen apart at the seams. Believe it or not I just bought a pair of BILT boots and I bet they will easily outlast my last 2 pair of Astars. WTF?
