Shudder into 2nd or 3rd
09/25/15 10:50 PM

Another silly newbie question sorry :-(

Sometimes when riding the beast just normally as I leave from a standing start and upshift into either 2nd or 3rd I feel kind of like a mild "spring loaded" shudder as I re-apply power. If I ride it harder it is faultless (Yeah I know, ride it hard all the time - problem solved LOL)

At the 1K service I quizzed the service manager at the dealer and he said maybe it was because it was a slipper clutch and it "cams" back over into acceleration mode from deceleration.

This isn't enough for me to think there is anything drastically wrong with my bike, but it's just not like anything I have felt before.

As I say it feels kind of gently spring loaded, not like power is cutting to the engine or anything.

Is this normal? OR something know to you guys?

Hehe, yep, slipper clutch. Verify your chain slack is adjusted properly, but I'm going to go with slipper clutch.

No worries, yup checked the chain, it was good.

So this is nothing to worry about then?

I agree with Vic if he's thinking like this... Are we talking about this shutter thru the clutch lever? If the chain is too tight, you follow this ramp of the slipper going back into place. With a loose chain, it takes up the chatter before you feel it thru the lever... That was my experience learning about a slipper to lever to chain slack.

Ummm more through my feet than just the clutch lever? The whole bike does it, although I think I feel it through the lever as well. I hope I'm not making this sound worse than it is, it's quite mild really, just different to any previous bike, but this is my first with a slipper clutch.

I'm familiar with chain slack, this isn't it. This occurs at a much faster rate, it gives about 3 or 4 "shudders" before it truly gets going in the new gear and I stress only if I'm riding it relatively gently - think in traffic.

Thanks for the responses guys.

Your bike is brand new bud... trust me at 10000 miles a lot of these little issues will have smoothed out. Trans will work way way way better, just pretty much everything IMO is better. Also you'll be more acclimated too, and maybe even by that time sorted out all the fairing rattles!

Mine does it and I've got 35K on the clock.

To get around it you can:

1) pull even more slack out of the final drive (chain)

2) rev higher before you shift up to the next gear

The torque the 1441 generates causes pilots to shift too early. In turn, the dampers in the clutch react, the cush drive in the rear wheel reacts, and the KTRC tries to justify it all.

The quick solution is to stay in a lower gear.

I disagree with hag. I'm not about to manufacture a bike and have you stay in a lower gear? Now you are saying you can feel it in the lever. That's where this slipper is being sent home, but you are following it with the lever.

If you had more chain slack, look how the slipper would run that loose chain up against that short throw back into the ramp, you'd have it sent home before the back wheel would pick up on it and send it to the lever.

I have to disagree with hag again, for the tone windows did not move [tire chirp] wise, where the tire loses traction and the windows now kick in? You'd be tone deaf if the sprocket cushions were upsetting the computer to set an intervention, right?

Is the lever chatter mechanical or electrical? Of course it's mechanical. Here is where I agree with hag... So you have nothing to lose, loosen the chain and test.

No worries guys,

Thanks for the all sound advice. I can't stress enough this is just a mild eyebrow raiser, not a bad problem. If you guys agree there is nothing fundamentally wrong with my bike from my description, then I'm as happy as a pig in poop to just keep riding in.

As suggested I think it's something I will just acclimate to. In fact on the last ride I think it happened once n the whole ride, I'm already being assimilated ;-)

If your description is mechanical, then there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the bike. But that's my opinion...

... because you now say it happened once during the whole ride? So it has to be there like a cut finger or it's not bleeding. Every time out it should be there with every shift, but there is an idiosyncrasy you rode into not feeling it.

I can't stress enough about bulletproof being built the way it is.

OK to be more factual, what I meant is the more I ride it the less it happens, or at the very least the less I notice it. I kind of expected that, as with all new beasties you get to know them better as time goes by, and I think I am just timing my shifts better the more I ride it.

Earlier posts that spoke volumes to me was the talk about upshifting too soon because this things has masses of torque and its so silky smooth that you almost can't help yourself. But I did notice that sometimes when I upshifted it would settle to as little as 2200rpm in the new gear. I had to catch myself and let it rev a little more, because that's not the way I want to load up a brand new engine.

My Triumphs were the same, they definitely shift differently to a Jap bike, until someone reassures you there is nothing wrong with it, it just leaves a nagging doubt, but then perhaps I worry too much. I did 22 000klms on one and 15 000klms so far on the other and now although I regard the boxes as a little rough, they are definitely bullet proof.

AS opposed to the ZX-14 which is really really really fast and bullet proof ;-)

load up a brand new engine.

Those days are over. It's all about the telemetry keeping things crisp and responsive.
