Just installed Roaring Toys swing arm extensions on my 16se. On the test ride I noticed ABS light stayed on and speedometer wasn't working. Fuses checked out fine and all sensor conections were good. Checked for codes and was flashing 45. Don't know if speedo and ABS issues might be caused by the same problem. Any ideas?

Are you sure nothing's blocking the sensor from reading the ABS ring? We've had people in the past that have found debris built up blocking the sensor causing this same problem. Obviously it's not going to be dirt, but maybe something else, packing material, removable tab, grease?

Nothing I can see. Made an extension for the sensor cable so it could be routed the same as stock. It reads it's making good contact, but I'm wondering if it's pulling to much resistance because of the extra length? Also does the speedo use the pick up on the back wheel? Please excuse my ignorance. I've been on Harley's for the last 40years and this bike is a totally different animal. Last sportbike I had was a 76 Z1.

Hub or a couple others might be able to confirm the resistance possibility. It's probably in the service manual somewhere but damned if I know where. It does seem like these electronic systems are very dependent on certain levels of resistance so that could very well be the issue. Code 45 means sensor short or open. It'd be difficult to believe a few inches of wire would change resistance that much unless it was a much smaller guage and not very good wire. I'd think trying a larger guage wire with low resistance just to test with could verify this since theoretically it should add the most minimal of resistance.

Yep, speedo works off rear tire. There's got to be some solution to that cable since extended swingarms are so popular.

I think your logic might be correct. Any conducting wire has a resistance associated with it and the resistance of the material is directly proportional to the length of the wire and inversely proportional to the area of the cross section of the wire, so I would first try using a thicker grade of wire where I ran the extension to help reduce the resistance.

My bike is a 2013 and does not have ABS, but I have the Roaring Toyz extensions and it has not affected the speedo or anything for that matter.

How exactly did you make an extension for the sensor cable? Adding a foot or two won't change the resistance much at all at DC but the connections or terminations will change the circuit impedance and could be changing the response on the pulse timing and the sensor thinks there is an error?

I've asked about making aftermarket sparkplug wires and a whole main wiring harness. Hub felt there might be a problem with both because of signal timing and resistance. Never tried either. Have used inline connectors to stick coils for quickshifter. No problem. Have used in line connectors for speedoHealer and no problem there either.

2nd Hagrid's comment, bad splice or loose connection. According to: http://www.cirris.com/learning-center/calculators/133-wire-resistance-calculator-table you added about 0.026 ohms of resistance to that cable...

Are the wires crossed maybe?

I think it works something like this kind of code chasing:
a. ABS uses fore and aft tone wheels for front or back brake locking.
b. k-Skid uses fore and aft tone wheels to see who slows down or who speeds up.
c. The speedo runs off the output sprocket or that square thing sitting on the sprocket bolt, or some configuration there of that sweeps the magnetic pickup.


Though the speedo is out, there is no code 45 for either gen.

+1, almost certainly this is correct. Hagrid, too, by default :)

You're fooked.

The lines almost certainly have to be impedance matched for a balanced circuit, within a *very* small amount of tolerance.

Having said that, I don't know how you're going to fix it, now.

Removed extension and just spliced and soldered longer wires. Plugged sensor cable back in and took it around the block, all is good. Raining here all week so can't take a long shake down run but I'm hoping it's problem solved. Thanks for the input guys. Soon as I can figure out how, I'll post a few pictures..
