Engine cutting out and sometimes dies
03/26/12 4:42 PM

Ok guys, here is a mystery for you. So last year I was ripping up some back roads in 100+ degree texas heat. I hit a nice long straight and opened it up. All of a sudden she cuts out, I give it throttle and nothing. Pulled her over and and thought I might have accidentally tapped the run switch. Fired it up and it kept on running like a champ. Forward to this weekend, after replacing my coolant with engine ice, an old and filter change, some frame sliders and a USB charger wired to my battery. Im flying down the road and I give it some gas and I lose power. I give it a bit more gas and it surges forward! Eventually this got worse and worse until I had to slow down and she just died all together. I waited for a few minutes then fired it up and limped home. The issue came up maybe once more on the 30 minute ride back. Yesterday I took it out and tried to ride around at 6k rpm's and it did happen again just once but it never died.

My plan is to check the PCV connection and reload the brocks map. If that doesnt do it, and you guys dont have any suggestions its off to the stealer for a check up.

Any insight you guys can offer will be greatly appreciated it. This is on my 2010 ZX-14 SE.

Sounds an awful lot like the thread above this one.

also check the plugs that the wire from the speed sensor goes to. Make sure they are tight and dry and not shorting.

No one is mentioning the speedo going berzerk but that is what happened to me. It was just a bit wet on the speed sensor plugs.

This is showing how they come apart but you can see what they look like.

I always ask this as well....do you have a manual timing wheel on there?A Muzzy or something?Mine got loosened up on my 07 a couple of times...talk about trying to figure THAT one out. What a nightmare...until I actually opened her up as a 'last resort'...that's what it was.Out of time.Even the mechanics had NO idea what could be causing the symptoms I was having. And looking back...it really was a 'no brainer'.All the signs of an out of time motor were there.

@Grn14 - Dont have any manual timing wheel unless its on there stock. @Rook - I dont remember anything strange going on with the speedo but I suppose if the bike thought it was going over the limit that this would trigger the issue Im feeling. I will dig in there and take a look when I check the PCV.

The volts are good. Im usually between 12 and 14. Ill check out the tip sensor and my ground wire to the PCV. I read on another thread that that the ground wires may cause an issue similar to mine.

also check your main harness plug for the pcv

Good suggestion. There are about fifty little contacts that slide together. I would push both of those PC connectors together real hard. They go together super tight and it is a nighmare to remove them. Connecting sisnot so bad cuz at least you have something to hold on to. If you hear a click, the connector was not fully engaged and locked.

There's two of these behind the throttle body assy. 1 male+female to PC, 1 male+female to main wiring harness.

Obviously this is a pic of one that is NOT plugged together all the way

I think I've fixed the problem! Seems like it was the ground on the Power Commander. Keeping my fingers crossed that I am done with this one!

Notice how it is never 'bulletproof.' That is a shitty location = Way too many problems there as is crying for a map. Extend the wire and use a 6mm frame or engine thread someplace?

I think the washers between the connector and the frame should do the trick. If it creeps back up then I will visit extending the cable to another location.

I had that same ground issue I extended the ground wire ran it to the other side (behind the throttle bodies) and connected it to frame where the battery grnd is connected.

Hub's right there retsam. I have heard of this problem before. Never had it but I was told NOT to use that as the ground unless you use a washer with teeth that bites in and grips along with a low profile nut then the plastic jug mount hole over that and the bolt going through it all. Think the guy recommended using a longer bolt to pass through the extra thickness of the nut and washer. The nut is there because it is NOT safe to tighten the bolt real tight against the plastic which will crack and spill your fluid. Also, the plastic is soft and it will loosen up after a time just from forming to the shape of the metal parts that are tightened into it.

If I were you, I would just use this ground. Grn did on his old 14 and I have for the last three years. Never been a problem.
