Looking for a quick cheap way to change the color of seat cowl
09/10/13 8:26 AM

Hi guys, I have an 06 thunder blue zx14 that I bought without the seat cowl. A buddy of mine gave me his spare and the only issue is it is the wrong color (Black)

I am looking for a low cost way to change the color thunder blue and Im guessing going with spray paint is the only way.

It does not need to be perfect since it is just a seat cowl and I only use 50% of the time, but I would like clear coat or some sort of gloss on it so it matches the rest of the bike.

Where should I start?

Thanks in advance!

www.colorrite.com They will mix you a matching color in a spray can and get a can of clear coat. I did my ZX10 tail cowl and fairing and it came out great.

Thanks, Checked out colorrite, they seem pretty pricey though. The aerosol package costs $115. I can buy a new cowl for a few bucks more.

If I can do it for around $50 I will do it, Otherwise ill buy a blue cowl and sell the black.

The problem with Candy colors is that they are a 3-part process; base coat, color coat and clear.

When I wanted to paint the swoosh panels on my Givi V35s, I went to a PPG automotive store with a part to match with. As soon as I walked in the door, the dude behind the counter said, "That's a Candy color and we can't match it." He let me go through their sample book, which has paint chips with holes in the middle to overlay onto the part you want to match. I was able to find something very close but not perfect. They mixed me up a rattle-can full of the color I chose and I got some clear overcoat to go with. Total cost about $25. Painted the swoosh panels and the raised fins on the foremans and you can hardly tell the difference.

Hmmm, when I bought an aerosol can from Colorrite it was $19.00. Maybe special type of paint?

If you are not fussy about color, just scuff sand it and rattlecan it with Rustoleum or Valspar. Polish it with something like 3M scratch remover. I guess it would be best to clearcoat it. It will look perfect.

I did my sprocket with orange Valspar. Took at least a month to dry but looks great.

You might consider applying colored vinyl from a place like Mr Letter whom you may search for online. Vinyl is cheap and easy to remove. comes in 16" wide (maybe wider???) x however long you want. With the help of a hair drier or bright hot sun, you should be able to apply to the seat cowl without much trouble. Sharp bends like on the nose require a lot of patients. Actually more time consuming than painting but cheaper for material and totally reversible. Graet way to try stuff before committing to paint. Even if you don't succeed in applyinhg vinyl perfectly, you will know exactly what it will look like if you should want to paint.
