AMA Hall of Fame
07/12/13 5:48 PM

Hey everyone!!
I'm sorry I know this doesn't have anything to do with our beloved but I'm about to bust so I had to tell. A man I have known and been friends with the whole family since I was about 12 years old got voted into the AMA Hall of Fame yesterday!!! Norm McDonald the Co-Founder of K&N Filters has become a member of the AMA Hall of Fame.
I knew yesterday when they got the call but I don't think it was announced until today but I just had to tell you guys because hey...we all love our bikes here right!! Anyway I just had to make a salute to a great man who spent most of his life supporting, protecting, promoting and loving the sport that we love!! That's him on the right in the pic. And yes that's my dumbass in the middle. Sam McDonald on the left who is a former AMA Pro Superbike Champion.

Oh Crap I just realized this should have been in the "Off Topic" category. I apologize. I don't know how to move it or I would. Again, my apologies.

Thank you wolfy!! I'm just sooooo freaking proud of him!! I really do know how much time and effort he and Lucy (his wife) have put into all of it over the years. I know it sounds funny but it almost brings a tear to my eye.

I'm sure Sam already saw this video? Small world but we probably passed each other in the pits that day?

Wow, I forgot that Tryg was racing that day!! LOL His son Dane Westby has done very well in the AMA Pro Sportbikes. Struggling a little this year with the new Geico team but it takes time sometimes. I gotta ask Sam if he's seen this!! What were you doing that day Hub? Were you riding or working?

sick, I was in the BOTT [battle of the twins] that day. Tried to pass that Norton, but I had zip for ground clearance. Dragged the footpegs so much so, they'd grind to a point. I'd have to change those to pass inspection, so I came with spares knowing about shaking her down before the nationals. Once ground away, I'd tag the clutch case, kick the back out and that would stop me from pushing it any longer: so I cruised to 3rd after all the cheating and crashes were out of the way. Next race was at Sears Point. Lead a few laps [in class], took a legit 2nd and retired from racing that day. Now, the [alleged] rumor has it, there may have been a little cheating going on with a transmission gear set change? Box stock is, do not change internals, but if you, as the saying goes, "You ain't cheat'inn you ain't win'inn" is that NASCAR mantra/Yosi Yap. I'm sure it trickles down to every class you enter.

Looking back, I really find it funny. It was all about the competition and where you stood against them. That's why I want your bike to run crisp so you have no excuse to blame the bike. It's all in your hands. But I can't get you to the front is the problem. LOL. We'd crisp up some kid's bike and watch the traps show: he was the fastest thru it. But his sector times were mid packing, and that's where he winds up. It's so much a head game, how can you get someone up front with a front running machine? Where others ride junk and are up front?

I can't explain it.

I can hub. I have been on the track and seen that shit with my own eyes. In every case I was the poor broke bastard with the lesser machine and barely enough gas to finish out the weekend. It was all about self doubt and fear inside those riders with the best of everything. It was the only way I could hope to stand a chance. So I would get in their heads, talk trash, wheelie in the fuckin pits, do circle burnouts. Anything. I would be talkin at em the whole time. 'Can you do that? I learned that when I was four. Do you know how to give a rider the wave at full lean? I will wave to you when I pass you in turn six!' Dude, I wouldn't quit. Then I would finally get out on the track. The place I loved, the place where no one could get pissed cause I was going too fast. And I would say to myself, 'here it is! They ain't gonna let ya ride like this back home!' And I would ride so fuckin balls out. I still feel myself flyin into those turns, gives me goosebumps. They all thought that backwoods hick that won't quit cussing and swearing is nucking futz! :)) race is over, I would tag a sixth place. That would be the sweetest fuckin sixth! I loved my shitty finishes! I thought I was fuckin Kenny Roberts.

Wolfy, I worked the pits alone like most did back then. Let me tell you, 'dem days IS Obeer! You need an umbrella girl with her gashing out my camel toe and cleave me some Cody pillows there too. The generators, the carts, the extra wheels, a chassis man, a pit boss, the list goes on.

C, Thanks! 'If I only knew what I know now' is the saying.

I got a perfectrashitalking story. First, you had to be there. We are in line signing up in the morning, so I have Wes behind me, Dave Roper in front of me. Freddie steps out of someplace, bathroom robe on, orange juice in a glass, and watches all of us as he's sipping away. Wes blabs out a line about how Freddie is not in line with the rest of us. I don't recall the exact words, but it was funny and we started to crack up. They were going back and forth a little. Fun times!

Which reminds me. Ask Sam if he heard that dissing Wes was pulling in line on Freddie's chain that day?

Hub, I'm gonna try and get Sam to come on this forum with us. He stays pretty low profile anymore but I'm gonna tell him about all of this and text him the link. See if he'll join up with us. I bet he'd enjoy it if he'd give it a try!!

Wow. This is the finest bunch of riders. Awesome to connect over common ground after all these years of all of us doing life. Must mean the bike that brought this crew together is pretty special. Maybe even a little greater than the sum of her parts.

Same here, Dogo. 3 close enough tracks around here to trackday.

sick, Sam may stay low being a somebody. I'm a nobody and was some also ran being lapped by these guys. These are seasoned racers and have been racing for years. The hired gunsandshit are the factory boys. I just showed up because I had too many tickets. It just snowballed for a handful of years and boom, she's done.

C, No doubt the community is a small world, especially the road race set. We all know someone in the industry, racing, etc. And no shit?! Well, if anyone knows if that's a fact, Mike was close enough to hear Freddie over the nose, I mean noise. Freddie's an Icon. If the Nascar boys did it and drove the wells off the cars, sure didn't matter with Freddie at the bars,(pun): if that's true. I don't believe it. Do you?

Nah, I don't think it was a screwdriver. I think I had myself actually win a race in one of them whoppers! Freddie spencer was so fing smooth when he had his head straight, I, to this day, have never ever seen a guy run a two stroke like that. He was simply frickin awesome! Ya know, Marc Marquez has a bit Of that something we mortals get a glimpse of sometimes. There is a hired gun! :))
